I found Cross Island Farms on the internet and we decided to check it out. The farm was not what I expected but it turned out to be a pleasant experience. When we drove up to the front of the house (yes, house) we were greeted by two friendly dogs. As we are all dog lovers, we made friends with them right away. We went inside and saw a table full of fresh fruit and vegetables and more in a refrigerated case. Someone (one of the owners?) came to help us. She helped us choose what we needed and told us about the selection of meats. We then also bought a thick sirloin steak that we ate that night. It was yummy. She also told us about the fruit picking. We went back the following morning to do that and got some more freshly picked fruit. Wow, those strawberries were very tasty. Can't get them in Westchester County. (We live in Peekskil, NY and Denver. No one is from San Francisco. Where did that come from?) As for the animals, I think you have to take the full tour to see them all. But we did see a few pigs and goats. I wanted to pet them all as they seemed friendly but they were behind a fence. Oh well. Overall, a very satisfying experience. Just don't expect anything fancy.

They sell goat, beef, pork, [organic/free-range] eggs, fruits, vegetables and herbs. They have educational (and enjoyable) farm tours, primitive campsites (private&no energy/water hook-ups, walk in etc.,) and volunteer opportunities. It is a fairly small farm run by two people in the thousand islands region of NY.

They dominate the farmers market. In every category. Without their CSA we would have a much harder time living here. Seriously. Not that we don't absolutely adore food service burritos, frozen and reheated corned beef, and Subway. Tomatoes: best. Watermelons: no one else knows how to grow them. Summer squash: best. Green beans: best. You get the picture. The full list of "bests" would be longer than the rest of this review if I finished it.

The 2nd one had more flavors but it looked less fresh. They do not allow dogs or skateboards in this area. They have live music and vendors that include baked goods, honey, local produce/vegetables/fruits, house decor, spicy jams, jams, cookies, cupcakes, food trucks, thinly sliced potato on a stick, and much more. It was a crowded event with lots of families/children. The sidewalk is narrow so people end up walking alongside the grass area. I like that this market is different than most farmer's market because of the craft element. I saw yarn animals, handcrafted wood furniture, and some other really neat craft projects.

Wendy's Country Market is the retail store version of Wendy's mobile market, which links up piles of local food producers (from Buffalo meat to baby lettuce heads) to individual customers, wholesalers and restaurants. Needless to say, come Spring and through Fall Wendy and Rick are busy people. Good thing they have an adorably floppy Basset Hound riding shotgun on deliveries. Anyway, the store is out in the boonies. But if you're around the area/looking for a country drive it's a great place to stop in. Wendy and whatever relative/friend is working can give you a rundown on pretty much every product in there. Plus it's in an old school house with lots of the original interior. Neato.

The farm has a huge variety of pumpkins -big, small, perfect round ones, all the shapes , so it's easy to find a nice one. They also have a cute little store that sells fresh fruits, veggies, pies, and even pickled goodies. All of that was really reasonably priced. Now... the pumpkins themselves? Kinda pricey in my opinion. Some were around $20, and don't get me wrong, they're beautiful pumpkins, but still on the expensive side. We ended up spending way more than expected ,definitely not dropping $60 on pumpkins again next year . Aside from that, the hotdogs and hot coffee were perfect for the weather, and the tractor ride + corn maze were honestly the highlight. So much fun.
