The South Tacoma Farmer's Market has been operating for about 2 years now so that probably explains…read morewhy there are so few booths in attendance, like probably not more than 15 booths. That is probably the only and biggest criticism that folks might have about it. But otherwise, the market is in a great location. It's on the grounds of one of Tacoma's new community centers so there is plenty of parking and open park space where you can bring your dog and toss a frisbee or something after you're done shopping. It's also within reasonable walking distance of one of the Sounder stops. There's kids activities and live music. Most vendors accept alternative payments like EBT/senior vouchers and are also bilingual. So far the best booth is the bakery cart dude who hawks yummy mini-foccacia rolls in all kinds of sweet and savory flavors. The Manitou/South Tacoma neighborhoods haven't really had access to community events like this for years so I hope to see the market attract more vendors next year. I'd still recommend stopping by for the cheap produce more than anything.

It's more of a community bizarre, and the pricing is aggressive to say the least. At a recent market, there was a seller selling tomatoes for $11 a pound. How are you selling direct to the public at a rate at almost 4x local stores. Matter of fact, I was in Chinatown this week and a seller was selling tomatoes for $1.40 a pound. No, the Chinatown tomatoes weren't as round or as pretty as the farmers market, but I suspect once sliced they taste the same. Puyallup is a hike, but reviews were plenty and positive. It is so far the largest market we've seen. There were plenty of choices. What I have learned is to walk the property before spending. It's easy to see something you like and buy it only to find another vendor selling for less. I can easily give this place 5 stars for selection, but pricing is a single star. Chocolate at $60 per pound. Jerky at $50 per pound and a glass of lemonade for $8. If you are bringing your signature items to market, be fair in how you price. I can get a gallon of lemonade for less than $5 at Safeway, a pound of jerky from Oberto for about $30 and a pound of candy for about $30 at See's, even closer to $20 if you buy certificates from Costco. I love to support the little guy, but I suspect short of the farmers, some of these sellers are doing very well for themselves.

During our visit, there was a few fresh produce products available for purchase such as nectarines, peaches, plums, zucchini, watermelon and corn. Packaged items such as honey and chips were also available. The Hot Sauce Festival was the main attraction of the day so there was a food truck on-site as well. Blistering hot pepper starts of several different varieties could also be purchased for those with green thumbs. Unfortunately, that isn't me. After sampling several fiery hot sauces and marinades it was refreshing to be able to order and consume an ice-cold craft beer from McMillin Farms brewery on-site. Red and white wine is available for those who do not care for beer. Beers were pricey at $8.75 each; however, keep in mind that you are supporting a small and local business. I look forward to attending future events at McMillin Farms.

As a community volunteer, I volunteered at a recently held a car show at McMillin Farm Brewhouse in…read morePuyallup as a fundraiser benefiting our local area veterans. While we appreciated being allowed to use the event space at no charge, unfortunately, the experience had several significant issues that affected both our organizers and their participants/volunteers. The event check-in began at 8:00 AM (with check in at 7 am) and the show ran until 2:00 PM. Despite this, the main entry gates were not opened until 10:00 AM, even at the organizers request to please open it by 7 am. The response was an adamant "NO" . This created a major problem because the directions provided through MapQuest directed attendees to that entrance. Participants arriving for an 8:00 AM event were therefore unable to access the property as expected. While there was a back entrance to said location, there was no signage directing attendees or participants to that particular entry. The organizers were also told that they could not have a food truck providing a free breakfast for their participants because it would compete with the venue's food service. The problem was that there was no breakfast service available to our attendees during the time they were arriving and participating in the event. For a fundraiser supporting our veterans, having the opportunity to provide a complimentary breakfast would have been a meaningful benefit to the participants. Communication was another major concern. There was little to no signage directing attendees, no apparent advertising or promotion of the event by the venue, and very limited communication with the organizers before or during the event. When you're hosting a public event, particularly a charitable fundraiser, clear communication and coordination are extremely important. I understand that the event space itself was provided at no cost, and I'm sure the organizers are grateful for that. However, "free" does not eliminate the need for reasonable communication, accessibility, and coordination--especially when an event is being held for a charitable cause. The event location must realize their name is also tied to this event and after what I and several others witnessed, I would never support anything at this location again. My hope in sharing this review is that future event organizers will ask very specific questions about gate access, signage, food options, event promotion, and venue responsibilities before booking an event here. I'm sure the organizers wanted this to be a positive experience for their participants, volunteers, attendees, and, most importantly, to raise funds for our veterans. Unfortunately, the lack of communication and coordination made that considerably more difficult than it needed to be. In fact, given last year's event welcomed well over 100 cars, this year it attracted only 22. The organizers were lucky to have broken even. But the biggest loss was to those whose time, and energy, committed to participating and volunteering, for an event that had such a low turnout, was wasted.

While most of the parking directly in front of Anthony's is reserved for their customers, there is still plenty of parking available nearby, including visitor parking for the neighboring building on weekends. The market is clean, well organized, and even has clean public restrooms, which is always appreciated. One of the highlights of my visit was Perkins Family Farms. I had the pleasure of meeting Llewyn Merrill, the sales manager, who was incredibly friendly and welcoming. He freshly shucked oysters for us right on the spot for only $3 each, and there was no minimum order. The oysters were fresh, delicious, and definitely worth trying. We also picked up several baked goods, including the cheese bread and a plain croissant, both of which were very good. The cheese bread had great flavor, although it was a little chewy, likely because it had been baked earlier that morning. Overall, I had a fantastic experience at the Olympia Farmers Market. There was an impressive selection of fresh fruits, vegetables, berries, mushrooms, seafood, flowers, local crafts, and other unique products. The friendly vendors and welcoming atmosphere made this an enjoyable visit from start to finish. I highly recommend stopping by, especially to visit Perkins Family Farms for their outstanding fresh oysters and excellent customer service. I'll definitely be back the next time I'm in Olympia!
