As an outsider who never went to this school, I can't vouch either way whether the academics of this place are good or not. Instead, I took the LSAT here last October, and upon entering the place I was surprised by how much this place felt like high school, except bigger. It had color coded hallways on the cheap painted cement blocks and numbers showing where you are in the great basement walkways. I'm not claustrophobic, but I can see how in this place you could get that way...seeing as how there were few windows to the outside world found anywhere. The classrooms were full of long tables with uncomfortable chairs and nasty fluorescent lighting everywhere. Yuck. Come to CU, whether it be in Boulder or Denver kiddies...that's my advice.

This my fourth semester here I'm getting a great education without breaking the bank. The classrooms are small and very diverse as a 30-year-old this is important to me. The campus is better then most community colleges. They have an awesome gym, game room, athletic center, coffee shop and store. The cafe is big with plenty of you to eat and study!

I have tried official channels. Im not afraid to de-anonymize myself either. To any official there: my initials are JML and my student ID ends in 0421. Some of your instructors have been complete garbage. I could go on ratemyprofessor.com and single them out, but I feel that is not nice or appropriate yet, so instead, Im going to bash on the institution a little bit in what I think is a fair way. The intro to MySQL class: this instructor was a robot that read from a script. He didnt teach, nor do I believe he knew anything about MySQL. There was no mention of tools (mysqlworkbench, terminal commands, phpmyadmin, etc...), there were no labs, no demonstrations, nothing. It was just him reading a script the. whole. time. At one point, I got so fed up that I interrupted him (politely) and pressed a fairly basic question about SELECT statements (it was on topic for what he was discussing at the moment). Yeah I knew the answer, I was basically calling him out on his BS. He was unable to answer it at all, so he just brushed the questions aside and kept reading from his script. I felt bad for the others in that class who arrived with no MySQL experience and left with no MySQL experience or knowledge. To any admin reading this, go watch the video of this guys class. It was a joke. I got an A in that class and didnt learn one damn thing. If anyone learned anything from the way that guy taught, Id be amazed, it was horrible, and I was really looking forward to that class. The Intro to OS and client/server environments class: this was really a writing class where the instructor pushed end of life windows operating systems and had no linux knowledge. There was no hands on anything, no labs, no quizzes, no intellipath, no Q and A, just literally blather about windows server 2006 and an extremely poorly designed multi session assignment (watch the videos to see what I mean). I did the reading assignments, which had decent material, but the worksheets were nonsensical, and the grading was more on if you follow APA format than had substance. This was all fine, whatever, but the kicker that really sets me off is the assignment that one assignment had explicitly set the requirement of 400 words. My paper had 454 words. Therefore I got a C. I sent in a grade appean, and it came back agreeing with the instructors grading in this matter: "The student's work was just above the minimum requirement at 454 words (400-600 required)" This is complete bullshit. If 600 is required, say "600 is required". I did the work, I met the requirements, give me my points. Ended up with an A- in that course but feel robbed. There have also been two really, really good teachers that stand out and wouldnt be fair not to mention. Applications of discrete math and stats: Amazing, would take class again even though I got an A. There were quizzes that you could redo any time, there was no writing assignments (which is appropriate for a math class), and he was able to field tricky math problems in real time. Great guy, great attitude. The intro to computer networking class: Another awesome class. Able to field difficult questions and roll with them. Quizzes, labs, a little writing, and an extremely methodical and knowledgeable instructor. Would take this class again, I felt I missed some of the deeper aspects, got an A. Could have spent 3 more weeks in this class. -JML Theres your 600+ words.

I submitted my application and after a few phone conversations, I couldn't take the disrespect and decided to cancel my application. When I explained I wanted to do graphic design as well as web development, because I'm looking to do freelance work, they said "that doesn't make any sense". What doesn't make sense is the lack of respect at this school. I'm glad I back out of this school. Read the reviews before deciding to attend. I should have, it would have saved me a lot of trouble.

Coming from this perspective, I have obvious positive bias towards this institution. Also, whatever you get out of your education is what you truly put in. Personally, I believe that Mines is a great institution that helps future engineers achieve their potential. From my experience, Mines has provided a lot of the skill sets I've needed to become successful in my career. Also, the programs at Mines are ever changing and evolving for the better. When I was taking classes, we definitely had a little bit more of a textbook structure. However, I see classes now incorporating more hands-on assignments and topics. Interestingly, I see classes moving towards topics that will truly be used in industry. I do believe that the education that you get from Mines will help you develop the skills you need to learn and be useful to a company. Opportunity. I definitely credit Mines will all of the opportunities I've received in my a lot of my life. Mines has helped me obtain funding, internships, connections, and jobs. Outside of this, there is a lot of opportunity for studying resources and help. If you aren't doing well, there are so many resources to help you do better. It is up to the individual to make use of these resources for their benefit. With all of the help that Mines offers academically, I believe that anyone can pass if enough effort is put into it. People do have to work and go to school. If you understand your limits and your financial ability, plan accordingly to what you think you can accomplish. Don't spread yourself too thin and only take on what you can chew. Honestly, the staff has been incredible to. If you give any normal person respect, I would believe that they would treat you with just as much respect. Respect is earned and given accordingly. I have received so much help from professors and administrative staff. They do want you to succeed. They are willing to help. But, be polite. Volatile conversations don't typically get you anywhere. This has just been my experience at Mines. I tried to address some comments I've seen in some of the other negative reviews I saw. Mines is a tough school, but it can be done. With hard work you can become successful. But, it's up to you to seize your own success and to pave your own way.
