About two years ago I fell and hit my front tooth, which was slightly extruded, I couldn't bite down (yes, my worst fear had come true). I didn't have a general dentist so my friend suggested I go see Dr. Zia for a consultation. I was fit in as an emergency, the office was incredibly relaxing. Dr. Zia's demeanor added to the calming atmosphere. The office is immaculate and the staff very professional and caring. The dental assistants are very gentle when taking x-rays and make sure you are comfortable. After carefully explaining what needed to be done Dr. Zia restored my front tooth back into position, this solved my temporary biting problem. My tooth still needed a root canal, but I moved to NY and sort of lost track of scheduling my next appointment. Fast forward 2 years later and there was no denying that my tooth needed the root canal since it had started to change color. I made the call and made the trip back to DC. This was my first major dental procedure and I needed it to be calm and relaxed even if it meant going back to DC. First and most importantly, the shot was painless!!! My gums were so numb from the topical and he was so gentle administering the shot that I felt nothing. It only got better, the procedure was over before I knew it because I was watching Modern Family on the ceiling T.V. He even internally bleached my tooth back to white. I was delighted to have my smile back. I highly recommend Dr. Zia, he's definitely as good as it gets when it comes to dentists and if you ever need a root canal don't you at least want it to be a pleasant experience?

He would look at his assistant with extreme anger when I had any sort of question about my procedure or expressed my anxieties. When I asked if my symptoms were normal, he angrily replied 'Yes, it is normal that you feel numb. What's not normal is your behavior.' He would snap at me when I didn't open my mouth wide enough. I suppose that training in empathy and communication skills can only go so far when you are simply unpleasant.

My primary dentist filled a cavity on the #18 tooth and put a cap on an adjacent tooth last March. Two nights later, I experienced pain along that side of my jaw that had just had extensive dental work. I called my dentist the following morning, and she recommended I make an appointment with Dr. Ribera for an X-ray scan so I made an appointment to see him. The scan showed no problems. Dr. Ribera tapped on the #18 tooth with an instrument. I did not react, and I was not in pain. He then applied a piece of ice to the inside of that area, and I reacted. He said that proved I needed a root canal. I said I wanted to talk with my husband in the waiting room. As soon as I said that, he hurried out ahead of me to my husband, and as my husband recounts, he was unusually friendly and chatty for a professional and someone he had never met. He stood close to my husband and, in a very animated demeanor, described why I needed a root canal. When my husband asked if we should make another appointment, he said he had time, and we should do it now. The company does not take insurance, so we paid the full fee, some $2855.00, out of pocket. Since the procedure, I have had continuing pain and sensitivity with this tooth. It is now sensitive to the touch - even with my tongue and still sensitive to ice. After several months of these problems, I shared my experience in a complaint I filed with the DC Dental Society. Kurt Gallagher, executive director of Society, said they would look into it, but I haven't heard from them. With the continuing sensitivity, I became more concerned and made an appointment with another endodontist who said that their X-rays showed that some of the root was left behind, and additionally, the tooth was cracked and could not be saved. ( I also learned from two endodontists that root canal clients are usually advised to wait two weeks before the procedure, which was not suggested by Dr. Ribera). My husband and I are old school (I am 76 and he is 80 yrs old) and are usually trusting of the advice of professionals. I have suffered considerable mental anguish since I realized what had happened in Dr. Ribera's Office. I feel that I permitted myself to be taken advantage of. I am sharing my experience in the hope that it will help others seeking endodontic services.

Dr. Ribera is great: friendly and knowledgeable, he walked me through the whole process explaining as he did his analysis. He does not accept any insurance which to me translates to money before health hence the lack of the 5th star. They do fill out and submit insurance forms for you. Their fees are pretty steep (not sure how it compares to the competition) and they go over all fees on a tablet before they do anything.

He's really funny as well as the staff; He's polite and answered my questions and concerns. The atmosphere is really nice too! He also preformed the root canal on that tooth 22 years ago back in 1995 and he did an excellent job then also. If you were told you need an Apical Microsurgery, I need to say the reason why you do not feel the infection in the tooth is because the root is dead which is why you don't feel the pain but if you wait till you do feel pain then it might be to late and you will need a different type of procedure than what I had. So the best advice I can give about the Apical procedure is not to wait till you do feel pain from the infection. I was lucky because mine was detected early because of an x ray.

I cannot say enough about Dr Mischenko and her team! A molar started to hurt when I was out of town…read moreso I returned to DC and met with Dr. Mischenko at Bethesda-Chevy Chase Root Canal Specialists, a highly rated endodontist that I had heard about from several relatives. The tooth in question had been treated more than 40 years ago. By the time I got back to DC, not only the tooth hurt, but the whole side of my face was in pain. They started by taking my history and evaluating my tooth. This included a CBCT scan, which showed the area of the tooth in 3D. This took only minutes, and they showed me several issues with the area including a small root canal that had previously overlooked. After reviewing my options, I decided to move forward with Dr Mischenko's recommendations. Her team was very professional, and the procedure was painless. They showed the utmost concern for my safety and comfort. They even put on a TV program I could watch while the work was performed. The procedure was done through an operating microscope and the technology used during my treatment was amazing. After three months, I returned for a follow-up review, and another CBCT scan was taken. Dr. Mischenko compared the new image to the previous 3D x-ray and could show me that the results were incredibly positive. The tooth was healing! Best of all I have no pain in the area. Overrall, the procedure ended up being a great investment and Dr Mischenko and her top notch staff was absolutely the best choice I could have made! I highly recommend Dr Mischenko and the Bethesda Chevy Chase Root Canal Specialists practice.
