Friday Food Fight is back! And it's here to stay. YES!
It seems the 12 weeks of the most recent Food Fight MCR weren't enough for us, so the guys behind B.EAT STREET MCR have gone back to old traditions and brought back Friday Food Fight.
This time, it's still taking place inside the Great Northern Warehouse, with entrances either on Deansgate or Great Northern Square. And for those living in or around Manchester who haven't heard about FFF, you must have been living under a rock, and you are seriously missing out. Each Friday between 5.30pm and 11.00pm you'll see, hear, smell and scoff some of the best things Manchester has to offer on the foodie scene.
I attended the opening night last night and, whilst I was pleased to see some old faces, it was great to see that Beat Street have gone further afield to find some amazing vendors to come and display their offerings. It's also fab that the concept has remained the same as the previous events - simply Eats, Beats, Booze.
Last night, the food here was outstanding. Notably, Nasi Lemak, with their amazing Malaysian street food. I first got to sample their eats at their pop up stall in the foodie section of Altrincham Market and have been a fan ever since! The guys are great and the food is out of this world! Last night, Jimmy from Nasi Lemak spoiled us with spicy fishcakes, Grilled Cod on Banana leaf, sambal prawns on skewers and amazing, sticky, succulent ribs. In the words of Lucas S. 'In-credible'.
Next up, we tried newcomer Yakumama - who seem to have popped up out of nowhere, bringing their fabulous Latin American inspired street food to Manchester. I was lucky enough to win their opening night RT comp on Twitter *fist pump* and won two free meals!
When I approached their stall, the guys recognised me instantly and we all celebrated giddily at the thought of me trying their food for the first time. They basically gave me two full plates of everything! Wild Mushroom and parmesan, and chorizo with homemade aioli quinoa croquettes were all amazing. The Cuban beef and olive empanadas with chimmichurri also hit the spot AND other tasty things on the plate: organic rainbow Mexican slaw, roasted peppers stuffed with feta AND organic spiced purple sweet potato! They use organic and local produce wherever possible and all their meat is free range too! Lovely food - lovely people! I'd be happy to see them back at FFF.
Not to be missed, and one of my personal fav's, is the Hip Hop Chip Shop. I approached their stall and was greeted with a smile and the usual 'Oh no, not you again!' cheeky look haha. He knew what I was after!! These guys had taken over twitter for the past week with images of their 'Shell L Cool J' burger: Louisiana Spiced Crabcake, beer battered smokey bacon and homemade coleslaw in a brioche bun. We decided to try this and conversation stopped whist it was devoured - and thoroughly enjoyed!!! Absolute winner.
Finally, we tried out another newcomer, Tomfoolery at 34 who served up some of the most delicious desserts! We had their lucky charms cookies and milk and a slice of cake that was as big as my face. I had no idea what was in it, but it was the best cake I've tasted for a while. I'll definitely be paying these guys a visit in Alderly Edge when they open!
Friday Food Fight is always great. And now that it's around for good it's also less busy - meaning hardly any waiting time for food and plenty of space to sit. If you haven't been yet - GO! read more
