Part of me didn't want to write this review, bc I wanted to keep this place for myself lol. Fresh off the Grid is AMAZING! We have visited several times, years apart, always after a beautiful hike in Pololu Valley, Fresh off the Grid makes for a divine lunch spot. The poke nachos are INCREDIBLE. Get two orders as you won't want to share once you dig in, Even my mom who usually refuses to eat raw fish was devouring them. They also have great drinks, fresh fruit, snacks and homemade pastries. Cute donkeys and chickens walking around, and if you get lucky with your timing, you might even get to listen to live music by local musicians. The bathrooms are a series of portapotties (the ones with sinks) but they usually are clean and well maintained on our visits. Bringing extra hand sanitizer w you wouldn't hurt. read more

Excellent stop on the way to or back from Pololu lookout. Wonderful view of the ocean with a few picnic table setup and cover from the sun. Parking on the grass field. Since we had lunch already, just opted for some ice cream on a hot day. Grabbed the chocolate and coconut ice cream, and the lychee shaved ice. The portions were generous and was very yummy. Gotta eat the ice cream fast otherwise it'll start melting immediately because of the heat. read more

I'll get into the more personal aspect in a second. First off - they are much more than juice. They have chicken and pork plates, ice cream, coffee, fruit. It's a perfect spot after hiking the peak (or not, it's an INTENSE HIKE). Chilled papaya, local goodies, ice cream - we sampled a little bit and sat in the shade while listening to a loving tribute to a friend of the owners who encouraged them to have local music, and to expand their menu (and really helped make the spot a community gathering point during Covid - can you imagine how well an outdoor space in Hawaii would work? It was a huge plot of land, plenty of space, music, mules, views of the ocean and cliffs?!?) This seems like an easy place to pass by on the road, but don't - stop by. Feel the love. Enjoy the peace. What an amazing, beautiful spot to eat delicious food. We were housesitting just a couple of miles away and would have been here everyday but they were on a break for a bit...finally came back and Oh.My.Yum. The poke nachos were absolutely perfect. Flavorful and a healthy quantity. Hubby had the poke bowl and also loved. We went back the next day for shave ice. I got coconut, with added Kona coffee ice cream and sweetened condensed milk topping. Highly recommend this combo. Hubby got Blue vanilla shave ice with vanilla ice cream. Sounds boring to me but he loved it lol. The best part is the view of the ocean and the horses and donkeys in the pasture. So peaceful and the ocean breeze is awesome. There was also a couple of guys singing which was lovely. In fact one of the guys we got to watch the next evening at Brown's Beach House! This was one of my favorite meals during my trip and is so underrated because it is a bit out of the way. It is the perfect stop on your way to/from Pololu Valley lookout. Green valleys and ocean view with great food, what more can you ask for? Here's what we ordered: - Poke nachos: The won ton chips were so crunchy and crispy and there was a ton of fresh fish! I love poke nachos and one of the biggest issues I run into is that the chips get super soggy by the end, but even the chips at the bottom stayed crispy. There was just the right amount of sauce and it wasn't too sweet. - Kalua pork plate: The pork was very tasty without tasting too "smoky" or heavy. there was plenty of rice and the purple sweet potatoes were absolutely delicious. - Chicken hekka: My mom was craving Chinese food during the trip and she absolutely loved this chicken plate with lots of carrots, bamboo, and other veggies. This is a nice and light dish with a surprising amount of protein and veggies. - Papaya ala mode: The chilled papaya with vanilla ice cream topped with macademia nuts was the perfect dessert to finish off the meal. The papaya was very ripe and the ice cream was really tasty! - Red hibiscus tea: This tea is refreshing and a little bit sour. It was definitely needed after hiking the Pololu valley lookout trail - Guava juice: I'm not usually a fan of guava juice from the store because they add a bunch of sugar, but this fresh squeezed juice was super refreshing - Kona coffee ice cream: The coffee flavor was really strong and the ice cream was unbelievably creamy! It looks like a small cup but they pack a lot of ice cream in there. The employees were so friendly and were working hard to efficiently get orders out. This is such a great spot and I highly HIGHLY recommend stopping by if you are in Pololu Valley. read more

Amazing vibes at this adorable spot. We saw it by chance on our way to Polulu and doubled back at the promise of ice cream. Cute little local services and run place to get locally made, grown and fresh food. We had the pulled pork, ahi salad, papaya and fresh coconut. The drill a hoe on the coconut then when you are done drinking it they cut it in half for you. We had the poke nachos last year and it was so good. It is a must to get the coconut especially if you have never had one. We spoke to another couple and they were from Minnesota and were asking if they should get one because they've never tasted a coconut I said YES get one! This spot is a gem at the top of the big island! We stopped here on a lightly rainy day for a quick bite and had no particular expectations but they were completely exceeded by the end! We ordered the poke nachos, shaved ice, and, after browsing their stand, bought the organic honey and a banana bread loaf. Best poke nachos I've ever had! Great shaved ice and amazing banana bread too. Even though it was raining, we LOVED the stunning views and the outdoor picnic tables with umbrellas and stayed outside to eat. Lastly, everyone was SOO friendly and genuine. It was such a wonderful experience overall and by the time we left, we were trying to find a way to go back one more time before leaving Hawaii. What a delightful stop on the North Kohala coast! Beautiful scenery, fresh fruit, live music - the perfect rest stop when driving around sightseeing. We popped over to the Big Island for a neighbor-island long weekend. We drove around seeing the sights, and on our way to the Pololu lookout, we passed this cute place we didn't remember from before. On our way back, we stopped, and were so glad we did. There's places to stretch, to sit, fresh air, lots of treats (mostly involving local fresh fruit), and opportunity to just *be*. Lots of picnic tables with some shade, depending on the time of day. The ordering area is covered, but the line grew pretty long while we were sitting there. Lots of grassy area where you could plop down on a blanket if the seating was full. Loads of parking space in the field. There is a variety of fresh fruits (coconut, limes, tangerines, bananas, etc), jams, and honeys available. Plus food like poke nachos, shave ice, smoothies, ice cream, fresh-squeezed juice, cut fruit. All of it was good, and didn't take too long to come out. There was live music by a guitarist while we were there (mid-afternoon on a Monday holiday), which added even more local flavor to the time we spent there. There are a few animals on site, but warning signs that they bite, so we didn't get too close. read more

Sadly their shave ice is only available with the artificial flavors so we gave that a miss, but they had a small but nice selection of local fresh fruit. A great stop to refuel and relax after a serious hike. The place offered lots of parking and open-air picnic tables. The food truck has so many delicious food offerings, from local fruit like papaya, banana and pommelos to baked goods and even full entries. And of course shave ice! We enjoyed our meals of the daily chicken special- which was Indian spice influenced slow cooked chicken over rice as well as the daily poke bowl served with rice and kimchi cucumbers. The brownies are really lovely- chocolatey and moist- and the shave ice is the perfect way to top off the meal. We had an ice with ice cream and drizzled with sweetened condensed milk just to up the ante. Almost forgot- tried a baked papaya for the first time and it was a decadent dessert. The middle where the seeds are was scooped out and filled with a rich sweetened mac nut and cottage cheese mixture. Highly recommended! After a long hike down the beach and a near-death trek back up, we drove by this cute food stand along the road with a sign that said "Smoothies! Shave Ice! Ice Cream!" Yes please!!! Customers were seated at the picnic tables set up in front of the food truck, listening to a live band playing Hawaiian music, and there was a line of about 10 people waiting to order. My favorite spot on the Big Island. This place is an outdoor food truck type situation with amazing foods, juices, fresh fruit and shaved ice. There is plenty of seating provided, done with shade, and the view just can not be beat. I arrived with my family around 1130 on a Sunday and just narrowly beat the rush. By the time we got our food - the line was long and plenty of people knew each other and seemed like locals - so you know it was amazing. There was a live musician there that was fantastic and I've lady even got up to hula to the music. It was just the most relaxing and pure alpha ambiance. There are also mules and horses in a field nearby and that was super entertaining for my children while we waited for our food. We ordered the Chicken Hekka, Vegan Tofu bowl, a coconut that they tapped for us and then cut open when we were done drinking the coconut water, several of the juices and shaved ices. EVERYTHING WAS AMAZING and right now I really want to fly the six hours back to Hawaii to get some more! There are also two port-a-potties on the property. read more

A definite gem of a place -- I drove the 1.5 hours from Kona to visit here, and when I arrived at 12 PM right when it opens, I had it nearly to myself. It's a beautiful grassy hilltop spot with sweeping views of the Pacific. There is plenty of parking and seating. It also might be a good idea to bring your own picnic chairs if ever the provided picnic tables are taken. Service was fast and friendly. I ordered the much-hyped-about poke nachos, papaya ala mode, and an iced caramel coconut coffee. The presentation of the poke nachos was visually appealing. The flavor was good, but rather sweet, and they skimped on the ahi tuna! Most of the red I saw atop my wonton chips were diced tomatoes. At $15 a plate, the lack of tuna was unjustified. So I'm withholding 1 star for this. More tuna please! The iced coffee was not bad; maybe a tad light on the texture, though that may have been due to my request that it be made with coconut milk as they didn't have oat milk on hand. After finishing a family hike down into Pololū Valley, we were all hot & hungry, so we decided to stop here for some refreshers and a bite to eat. Still a little winded from the hike, we almost kept driving but I am so glad we stopped! The food and atmosphere made for such an enjoyable end to our afternoon. We had chicken salad sandwiches, poke bowl, hekka chicken bowl, fresh & baked papaya & ginger mint limeades, and everyone said their lunch was amazing! I personally had the chicken salad sandwich, papayas and limeade and thought it was all delicious! I've never had baked papaya and found it both interesting and delicious! The chicken salad was super yummy (I especially appreciated the sprouts!) and the ginger mint limeade was soo refreshing and good. Simple food done really well. I am not sure how often they have live music, but considering that we were there on a Sunday at noon we got to enjoy some! It just made the atmosphere so wonderful.
