The market is obviously popular as there were many customers during my visit. I found some fruits are more expensive but most vegetables are reasonably priced. The fact that they are open about the fact that they don't grow all their produce but only work with local Ontario farms makes us feel that we are supporting local growers. Some of the other markets that carry bananas or avocados seems like they are just a small grocery store marking up prices for ambience. You can't do all your grocery shopping here but the flowers and the produce they have is of high quality. And when strawberry picking is going on in the back it is an extra fun excursion with the kids.

When we arrived the first thing my mom saw was a plant that was potted in the front. She said it looked like a plant called Dasheen, she was ready to ask if it was for sale LOL! Dasheen is kinda like spinach! It's taste so good when cooked with white belly shrimp. We picked up quite a few veggies (hot peppers, corn, kale, tomatoes, eggplant and cabbage). So soon as we got home we boiled the corn and added some paprika on it. It was so sweet, it didn't need butter! I would say the hot peppers were more on the mild side. But I did eat one that super hot. Hopefully next time we go we'll pick our own vegetables.

They're at the market year round. - wildrice (fall) - fresh seasoned tofu bites or nigari tofu from Ying Ying Soyfood (year round) - local wild blueberries and raspberries (summer) - bread baked in the community oven in the park (bread is year round) - vegan soup or pizza slice from the market cafe (year round) - a tofu burger or tempeh dog from vegan BBQ Brixton Grill (summer) It's not a huge market, but I can generally buy most things I need for the week there and fill in the blanks at a grocery store. It's a lot nicer when it's outdoors in the summer and early fall. In the summer, there's no shortage of earth mothers gathering to chat while their free-range children run partially clothed through the park. Considering that the market takes place during normal working hours, it's no surprise that you'll find mostly alternative lifestyle folk lingering and enjoying themselves. It's a great place to people watch on a nice day. The market runs from 3pm-7pm every Thursday of the year. There is no street parking off of Dufferin St., but you can usually find spots if you go down Gladstone from Bloor or park at Dufferin Mall. However, this is really the sort of market you should walk, bike, and take transit to. It's one bus stop/block south of Dufferin Station so it's very accessible. Don't forget your re-useable grocery bags, last week's berry cartons and paper bags.

They have fresh Ontario grown veggies that change seasonally. They have honey and beeswax, a fish vendor, frozen meats like elk and caribou. Sometimes there are local artists there, selling their art. Everything's organic, always the freshest. I love their rosemary loaf of bread. We just got some yummy pear cider from a vendor located in Milton. The prices are a little high, but everything's local and organic so it`s worth it.

Some of the stands aren't actually from farms (from what I hear) but just people that buy large quantities of produce and go to market to sell it. I didn't buy anything from those guys. I DID, however, buy from a bunch of different families/farmers. It was so wicked cool! I was really overwhelmed by the size of the setup and the number of stands. I most appreciated the guys that offered samples of their fruits and veggies. In fact, I wound up just saying "yes" to buying everything they fed me as I took each euphoric bite. I'm not gonna lie... not all of the vendors are very friendly. I actually felt that the majority were not so. That was a bit of a letdown. But I spent enough time passing through the lanes and chatting with a handful of people that I still had a warm and welcoming experience. The market is open Friday and Sunday from about 7 or 8 am until about 4 or whenever they pack up and will run to October. I know where I will be doing my shopping for the next couple of months!

We're going to try and get there every week!

And Doubles, which I could smell while in line for teriyaki, as soon as I smelled the curry I switched lines lol! The Farmer's Market is set up at Sick Kids Hospital every Tuesday. It's fairly small, but boasts a…read morevariety of items from fresh zucchini to raw honey; natural lip balm to gluten-free cake; organic berries to goat cheese. There's also a small and adorable blue truck that parks in front of the hospital and sells some of the best fair trade coffee I've tasted. It's called Jacked Up Coffee and is staffed by two unbelievably sweet gentlemen. The vendors are all warm, hard-working people who provide healthier options in a world filled with hormone and chemical-laced "food". The fact that this is done at one of Canada's best children's hospitals makes their job so much more important. If you plan to come to the market, make sure you arrive before 2pm or you'll leave empty-handed!
