I mostly work in the oft derided suburb of St. Albans: It's off in the (almost) outer western burbs and it wouldn't win any prizes for attractiveness, but I've come to really appreciate this incredibly diverse, migrant community. There are a few foodie gems here, Fresh Chili being at the top of the list, and it's cheaper than Footscray or Richmond.
Fresh Chili is a Vietmanese bakery and mini-chain: It also has stores in Sunshine and Weribee. Everuthing here is seriously good, from the creamy sweet coconut buns to the massive banh mi sandwiches loaded with fresh veggies and herbs and topped with the house aioli. I haven't tried the pork bun yet but word on Alfrieda Street is that it's the best in Melbourne.
Expect the best values in Melbourne too: The bahn mi is bigger than comparable bahn mi in other VIetnamese hoods and can last for two meals. I frequently buy a veggie one and eat half for brekkie and half for lunch. At 3.00 a pop for the salad bahn mi, you'll have plenty of change leftover for an iced coffee or pastry. read more
