Game shops seem to either have no space to play a game or they have lots of space with no clear instructions on when/how the space can/should be used and by whom. And all of the shops we visited while in town were struggling with identity crisis. As for Uncles: Good: Board game selection is better than the other shops we visited in town Bummer: Not a cafe and no obvious place to play a game, so likely intended as strictly retail rather than a gaming space. (No harm no foul...just offering an observation for the advantage of others) Bad: Nobody offered to help (employees stayed behind the counter while we were there). Odd: Organization/layout and display shelves were a challenge. Some areas were clearly organized and others less so. Just when I started to think I was understanding the organizational scheme, I'd find a game that obviously belonged with a group of others on the other side of the store. Just my opinion, but there is enough selection here that an alphabetical layout scheme would probably make sense. Suggestion: Pick an identity: Toy store or game shop? Gone are the days of the bizarrely mixed toy department in the basement of the local sporting goods store. Board games have moved beyond classification as "toys" and into the realm of being a true hobby all its own. If Uncles decides to focus up as a game store, consider dumping the little kid toys and leaning heavier into collectibles loved by most gamers (e.g. Funko, Iron Studios, Superhero/Fantasy/Sci-Fi stuff, etc.) Parking: rough. (Seemed as though downtown paid street parking was the only option.) Pricing is pretty standard for brick and mortar...a touch higher than you can find online in most cases. (I call it the "Instant Gratification Tax.") At the end of the day, I came away feeling as though the shop might be run by a pair of contentious siblings...one who loves modern board games and the other who is convinced that kid's toys are the way to go. Combining them in this small a space was OK in the '80s but now is just confusing for both groups.

I brought a friend here from TN this past Sept. and we dug around for a while. My friend bought a cassette or two he found and we had fun looking. I walked away with J. To which I said, heck yeah! He told me that I had to check out this place called, Jedi Alliance, an arcade with a bunch of old school games. Say no more, I'm in. However, they're only open Friday through Sunday, which makes it difficult for me and my work schedule. Fast forward to today (Sunday), I had the window of opportunity to make the hour drive to Spokane with the hopes that this arcade was all that I dreamt it to be lol. My friend had no idea where we were going and was still confused when we pulled into the parking lot. When we walked in, I got the instant nostalgic old school vibe and feel as it was kinda dim with all the games and machines giving the place a magical glow. "Voltron" greeted us and asked if we've ever been in before and we said no, we're first timers. He was really nice and when he went over the rules, he spoke calmly and read the rules in a speed that we actually understood. Sometimes you go to these game places and when they explain how things work, they either speed talk or mumble. Voltron did a great job giving us the run down and instructions and even gave us some history on the place. The cost is $18 per person with unlimited play from open to close, which I found as a great value because we ended up losing ourselves there for 3 to 4 hours! There's over 140 classic pinball and joystick games, which is outstandingly epic. There's no other place in this area that offers this many games and with the variety of retro classics too. I'm not sure if it's because I'm born in the early 80s, but this place hits the bullseye. I had a blast reminiscing from when I was a kid and I kept hearing my friend say, this is so fun, lol. The bonus is the fact they have a hand washing station, which I definitely used a few times. With all the hands touching the machines, I really appreciate the owner's thoughtfulness. Jedi Alliance has more than just games, they have a museum of retro pop culture movie posters and props, a huge collection of old school dolls, figurines, toys, and games. Some things are for sale and some things are not. Overall, this was one of the best times I've had in quite some time and will definitely be back.
