I signed up for the Conversation class but haven't taken survival 1 or 2 from you. Can I still take that class?

Dear Jill, yes you can. :) If you are a new student you can do a placement test so we confirm your level and the classes that can work for you.… Read more

I highly recommend the school for anyone trying to brush up on their Spanish or even learn from zero. I needed to take my Spanish to the next level in preparation for a new job, so I worked with Tara to customize my classes to focus on my weakest skills. I took her placement test and shared the areas where I new I needed to improve most. She created a custom syllabus for me that covered grammar, culture, common expressions, basic literature/short films...it was impressive. Also, all the student materials are saved and accessed from OneDrive, which makes out of class study really easy. This school is great in general about taking advantage of technology (like Quizlet and OneDrive) so that you can get as much extra study as you want. Tara was an excellent instructor. Really fun to work with and a solid understanding of Spanish grammar. For example, I've been speaking Spanish for over a decade and for the FIRST time learned that I had been making several grammar mistakes for years and never been corrected. It was crazy! So many things make so much more sense now. I also had the chance to take a few weeks of class with Mari Carmen, one of the Alexandria private instructors. SHE IS AMAZING. If you're taking private classes, request Mari Carmen. She has decades of experience teaching at FSI, a fun spunky personality, and an incredible grasp of the Spanish language. She is great for learning many of the language nuances that only a native speaker would pick up on (e.g. todos los días vs. Cada día OR the use of pensar vs. creer). The Alexandria location is clean and cozy with lots of natural light and is always stocked with coffee (big win!). Plenty of street and public parking, so that was never a problem at least for me. In summary, I'd say to give WorkLife Spanish a shot. Personally, I was really dissatisfied with the customer service of the massive language schools in DC and Arlington, and found WorkLife Spanish to be a refreshing breath of a excellent tailored language education. I know I certainly learned a TON...my Spanish is the best it has ever been. While I haven't taken any of the group classes, I did meet several of the group class instructors at a happy hour event and they also seemed fun and effective (at least the other students seemed to think so!).

Terrible experience with customer service…read more Booked a private session early in the AM on a weekday, and before 7:30AM the same day realized I had booked a session the day of, rather than a week out. Reached out expecting to be able to reschedule since it was before business hours and was told that I would be charged a $55 fee since the instructor had already been dispatched. Given all this occurred before their posted business hours, it seems unlikely that an instructor for an evening course was already waiting for me by 7:30AM and couldn't possibly have been rescheduled. Sad to see such short-sighted greed get in the way of common sense, but good for them for literally earning $55 in their sleep.

I think my skill level was a bit beyond the beginner class, but they only offered beginner and it was excellent to be able to refresh my skills. I was especially glad to get to hear and speak in real time. There weren't as many visuals or handouts/learning aids as I prefer, but I took notes for myself to learn from. Great concept, terrible execution. If your class does not have enough students (or in some cases, an instructor to teach it), they will simply stop communicating with you. They will ignore your requests for information or refunds. You will spend weeks moving your schedule around and waiting for information. DC has a lot of competent, busy, intelligent people who will support this type of thing, but they are careless with their time, money, and resources. I don't doubt some classes are great, but some classes are truly terrible (if they take place at all).

I was so fortunate to find Melissa as she's been crafting interesting and fun lessons that have helped me gain greater confidence in speaking French. I work in the field of international development -- where I am a trainer myself and where I work with trainers all the time. I can say without a doubt, Melissa is the best trainer and teacher I have ever come across. She has a real gift. Here are the reasons why: 1) Melissa can put you at ease right away. I knew very little French when I first met her and I was self-conscious about it. Melissa made me feel like I was talking to a best friend. She assured me that I was right where I needed to be for the moment and gave me all the tools and confidence I needed for the moments to come. She made me WANT to speak and WANT to learn. With her, an arduous task became pleasant. She made me feel at ease and capable of learning. 2) She didn't just help me improve during the hours we had class, but she also gave me the right resources to improve outside of class. One of those resources would have cost me hundreds of dollars if I would have purchased it myself, but Melissa gave it to me for free and taught me how to use it. The resources she provided increased my speaking level almost immediately and made French a daily habit for me. 3) Melissa meets you where you are. She can quickly assess your abilities and meet you there. She pushes you just enough. 4) Melissa is so incredibly pleasant. She's kind and she's responsive and she interacts like a friend. She makes you WANT to show up for lessons just to spend time with her, and that is a rare kind of person! 5) You improve! You improve QUICKLY! Before you know it, you are speaking French!!! Even if you are like me -- and you have been convinced all your life that you will never learn a language -- you actually end up learning and speaking! And Melissa celebrates alongside you. She takes joy in your progress! It all feels pretty magical. Simply put, I cannot recommend Melissa enough! She is worthy of all the stars and all the praise!

The courses they offered seemed wide in variety and like your standard adult education - I was surprised and pleasantly impressed since I had tried to find adult education in Alexandria previously and was not successful. This catalog somehow came to me without me having to find it. The class was 'How to Buy Residence' and it was $30 for city residents, and $40 for non city residents, taught by Dr. Diane Murphy, who is a buyer's broker. When we signed up for the class, we figured...'what were we going to get for $30? We'll be lucky if we learn ONE thing that night', but for the price, we figured what the heck. Parking is not hard although navigating through the school is ridiculous - it's quite sprawled out and just tough to find the class we needed. But when you walk into the building, there is a sign for Adult Education and a listing of classes and classrooms, so immediately I felt better; I was in the right place. It was a two hour class and it turned out to be chock full of good information. The class was excellent, excellent, excellent. I would have easily paid 3x-4x as much for the quantity and quality of information I learned in that class. I highly suggest anyone thinking about purchasing in the next 3 years to take this class. I was a total beginner and my boyfriend was a lot more knowledgeable about the subject, but he learned some important facts also, and said 'sometimes it's just good to hear it again'. The class probably should have been 2 hours a day for 2 to 3 days. I have a feeling she had a lot more info to impart. It also was as she said 'trying to drink out of a fire hose' - it's a huge amount of information in a short amount of time. But it's all good stuff. There were 10 people in the class. The registration process left much to be desired. It was so stone aged I almost ended up not registering. In this day and age, having to print two forms for my boyfriend and I to take a class (we don't fit on the same form), write a check and then snail mail this over to wait and see if you got in - it's unheard of. Nevertheless, I was sooo happy with the quality of the class, that I would easily do it over again and am looking through to see what else they have now. *Note: Please keep in mind that this review is based on ONE class; I can't comment on any of the others until I have tried them, and when I do try another one, I will update my review then.
