They were very helpful in taking their time to provide to me the many images I requested and the answers to my questions so as to gain the confidence I needed before placing a bid. Prior to this particular bid, I have also communicated with Alasdair Nichol from the American Art dept. and he too was very helpful and knowledgeable toward an item consignment. Working on getting new artwork. Hubby's ex-wife had atrocious taste. Seriously bad. Like expensive and bad. I want to meet her and see what her clothes are like. 'Cause it is BAD taste. Sorry, I digress. So, I have been hunting down interesting prints and other paintings in a mid-range price point. Freeman's is great because you get the pretty catalogue and start wandering around. There are estimates of prices and you can ask lots of questions. Yes, there are those things going for the equivalent of a nice house or condo, but you can still admire them up close. Over the years, I have gotten a fabulous French desk, settee, and old Oriental rug for a song (like $250 for a 10x12). Plus, the clothes are great at the couture sales. It's my favorite weird way to spend an afternoon to watch the bidding process. You can wander in for a few minutes at lunch and see the phone, internet, and live bidding go down. One hears stories about how some auction houses cheat buyers and make back room deals to fraudulently drive up prices or deny buyers the chance to make a favorable purchase.... Well, add Freeman's to that list of dishonest, cheating frauds. I was a Freeman's client for decades, spending hundreds of thousands of dollars collecting antique silver. While bidding, using their Live bid format during a sale last month, Which allows a full screen view of the auctioneer in live time, I won an item, the hammer came down, meaning I legally own it. Suddenly, a staff member appears, and whispers to the auctioneer, And my item comes up again, to my horror and disbelief..... For rebidding, and, to make matters worse, my on line bidding is And, Freeman's blocked by internet bidding for the next few moments, So I was unable to bid, the second time around, Staff told me later by phone that "an important client" wanted that item, so Freeman's CEO, who was with that client in the gallery, ordered the auctioneer to void my. winning bid, and re offer The item, allowing the gallery's friend to win, This action was improper, possibly illegal, and in direct violation to Freeman's terms and conditions which are posted on their web site. So, antique collectors, if you want to be cheated out of an auction item Go to Freeman's.......... read more

Well has Freemans has changed. I just spent over $11,000 at an auction and the customer service collecting my items was not only appealing bad, no one seemed to care. Some man walked around waving his hand saying oh I don't know what's happening and then looked down his nose at me when I said I really had to get back to work. Had to go into the ladies room for paper towels to wrap my purchases and then we packed my jewelry in somebody's discarded sandwich bag. The man rolled his eyes and said oh well glad I could help and then walked away to talk to somebody else. I will not be giving them any more of my money. Snotty and insufficient service is not acceptable read more

I have bought and sold on Freeman's on and of for years. They are fair and helpful in getting you through the process--especially when I was younger and didn't quite understand auctions. Love the furniture and book sales. David Bloom is a fun guy to deal with. In my mind, I tend to find things a bit cheaper than Doyle or Swann auction houses. But I'm sure that they are about the same. The only reason I gave it four stars was because of the receptionist on the ground floor. I'm not sure if she's just bored or pretentious or what. She's just flat out rude, and I hate that she's the first thing I see when I walk into the place. read more

I really like this auction house. The reason I am giving it 3 stars is that their auctions are getting smaller and smaller. They used to have huge estate auction but now choose to only sell select items. When I asked someone about the size of their sales they actually recommended another auction house (Alderfers) that handles the estate auctions. I have yet to attend one of their auctions and I will still check out Freemans for the "greatest hits" items. read more

I have been buying and selling at Freeman's for over 15 years. They are wonderful to deal with: accommodating, honest, frank, helpful, and reliable. Their auctions are well attended; they offer a good variety of furniture, antiques, American art, European art, and Asian art and antiques and porcelain. This is a good organization, and they offer competitive rates. The one thing that is outstanding is their communication; Freeman's gets back to you, unlike a large auction house in Massachusetts, and that makes Freeman's a first class outfit. read more

Had one of the worst experiences of my life when this company (over our protests) complied with the request of our obviously age-comprimised, father and auctioned off our family heirlooms for pennies on the dollar. All they were interested in was the money and in fact when we finally got our father to tell them to cease, they continued and sold several more irreplaceable items. Would avoid this business like the plague! read more
