Prestige Painting & Finishing

I called Mike Howell for an estimate to come and see about prepping and painting my 2.5 dining room…read morewalls. They had wall paper on them and I knew they could be painted over the paper if the process was done right. Mike said he knew how to do it. The process is this: 1. Start by replacing any damaged sections and adding adhesive to loose pieces to minimize the chance the paper will fall. Add a thin line of clear caulk around the perimeter of the walls, at the joint seam where the paper meets the floor and ceiling. This will help seal the edges and keep the paper from peeling after you've painted. Cover heavily textured paper with a thin coat of joint compound (spackle). This material will help smooth out the surface so that the texture won't show through the paint. Gently sand down the seams of the wallpaper so they're not too noticeable. Apply a coat of oil-based primer to the entire surface of the walls before painting. This helps seal the adhesive within the paper and away from the moisture in the paint. We recommend using Benjamin Moore's Fresh Start®. The wallpaper is now ready for painting. Because the moisture in latex paint can sometimes loosen wallpaper glue, causing bubbles or peeling, you should use oil-based paint. Mike and I discussed this process in great detail. When I emailed him back to accept his bid of $550, he said his brother Steve would be doing the job. I asked if he was as good as himself and he said "better". Steve showed up promptly to do the job approx 1 week later. He was in his mid-sixties and said he had been in the paint business for years. The 1st three days he worked very hard. I stayed out of his way and didn't bother him, until I saw he was about to put on the primer and I asked him if it was oil based, like Mike & I had discussed. He said it was not but it was better then oil based, so I thought he knew what he was talking about. I had moved most of the furniture out of the room except for 3 heavy pieces I couldn't move but Steve took no precautions to cover my carpet or furniture so when he sanded the dust went through the entire house covering everything with this thin layer of fine dust. I expressed my surprise at this when he started to paint the walls with this fine dust literally everywhere. That was the 3rd day (Friday) he was supposed to return on Mon. I also noticed the paint was bubbling over the wallpaper. This was because it wasn't prepped right. I called Mike the owner immediately after his brother left and expressed my dissatisfaction, asking him to come and look at the mess. He came the next day and said it would have to be done all over from scratch and that his brother didn't follow his directions. On that following Mon. I emailed Mike to tell him I didn't want to use flat paint like his brother used, that satin paint would clean better. At the point in the conversation he started saying how much work his brother had done, when I asked him point blank if he wanted to do the work or not because I was sensing some ambiguity and defensiveness in his in the tone of his voice. He said it was up to me if he returned to do the work. It took me almost 3 days to clean the mess his brother made by the lack of care to refused to take by not taking the time and professionalism to protect my carpet, home and furniture. I had to rent a carpet cleaner and buy shampoo and clean all the crevices of baseboards, furniture and everything in the house with a dry, bristled paintbrush. I made the decision that neither Mike or his brother were concerned about the mess they left me with and I finally told him that I didn't hire his brother in the 1st place I hired him and "no" I did not want to deal with him anymore. All in all I would not recommend him or his company.
