I would love to come back when there is an event of love music and sit in front of a fire pit. I counted at least 7 on spot through out. Hot damn! These folks take the hassle out of getting your hand on fresh, East Coast sea food. On…read moreThursday mornings the folks that run this business head to the docks around the Topsail Island/Sneads Ferry area to select fresh, local seafood - shrimp, crabs, and a variety of fish. They have added items from other locations once a quality supplier was found - like lobster from Maine, oysters from Virginia, puffer fish from Virginia also. The truck heads back inland, and they sell their fare staring Friday at noon, and will be selling on Saturday, and even Sunday, if supplies last. You can go to their excellent website, register, signup for their weekly newsletter, and place your orders, and specify a pickup time and location - works seamlessly. Once you sign up for the newsletter, you will receive info on Thursday about what items are available, and you can make your selections. The weekly items vary depending on availability and seasonality, but frequently available items include: several choices of shrimp, clams, crab, oysters, scallops, Black Drum, Chilean Sea Bass, Cobia Steaks (you really need to try these bad boys), Cod, Flounder, Grouper, Halibut, Red Snapper, Swordfish, Triggerfish (see Cobia Steaks), and Tuna! And there are always more choices. These folks bring you what seafood should be about - it is local, if at all possible; it is never frozen, if at all possible; and they tell you were it came from and in what condition. If you want seafood cheap, don't come here, you'll not be a happy camper. If you want fresh tasting, first quality seafood to prepare for you and your family, come here, you'll all be happy campers. Suggestion (notice I didn't say Pro Tip, that so sucks), if you've never had Puffer Fish, get some - the fish is incredibly ugly and I threw them back in for years, but these are awesome just lightly floured and fried - you could close your eyes and have trouble telling whether you are eating frogs legs, chicken tenders, or crayfish.

Day trip to Stonefield Cellars…read more It was a warm February day, we pulled into the long winding gravel driveway of the Stonefield Cellars winery. The site of the barren vines in the vineyard, an old farmhouse used for the office and a peak of the winery itself. Chickens in a coop, greeted us from a distance. An old grainery had been converted to a working storage for tending the fields. The pathway to the Stonefield Cellar, in the Yadkin Valley wine country, curved around young landscaping. Neatly kept, the species included boxwoods and azaleas. All were in their winter brilliance. Upon arriving at the front door, a patio was immediately to the right. Wrought iron chairs with inviting thick cushions called out for outdoor seating with a bottle of your favorite red or white wine. We resisted and went inside. Once inside, the tasting room, is a large open floor space. Natalie, one of the owners, greeted us as the double doors closed. The warm welcome and attention are a compliment to the atmosphere of a winery. With a brief overview of the layout, we casually browsed the selections....anything from dinner and dessert wines, to wine accessories, to wine country books with local flavors of local authors. The main attractions are stored on the wall beside the doors to the winery. The bottles were all beautifully presented on a simple but elegant tower wine rack. Cold rolled steel painted black so as not to overwhelm the bottles and labels. Other complimentary offerings were presented throughout the storefront. Collections of pottery, watches, wine accessories, ramblings- all of which occupies the main room. The interior design is subtly presented and adds a bit of class to the winery, the vineyard and the overall operations. For a mere $7, a taster can sample 10 wines in a custom Stonefield Cellars wine glass. We tried one of the sweet dessert wines and 9 of the traditional wines. I enjoyed the Cabernet while the spouse enjoyed the house Merlot. All wines have their distinctive flavors with the right blend of oak- no oak or subtle oak, combinations of the wines- fruity, spicy and/or simple grape flavoring. As this writer is not a wine connoisseur, I would suggest to the reader that maybe a fancier of wine, to try each offering, including the full compliment of red and white wines. Stonefield Cellars in Stokesdale, North Carolina is an enjoyable visit for an afternoon outing with the spouse. Enjoy--ed-

Creating a cheeseboard is like a work of art, you want people to say, " It is too pretty to eat."…read moreThose are the words of Luiza Holland of Wanderlust Boards. We opened our wine and began to create our work of art. The first items on our board were small containers of olive tamponade dip and fig jam. Then, we cut triangular shapes of manchengo cheese and added slices of Brie cheese, one of my personal favorites. We added square slices of extra sharp cheddar cheese and crumbles of Gorgonzola cheese. Next, we fanned our prosciutto ham and made cute little fans of our salami. " Give life to the board, use different colors and shapes", said Luiza. We cut small bundles of grapes and added them to our plate. Then, we added blueberries, blackberries, and thinly sliced apple. Our work of art was coming to life. Olives were positioned next to the cheese. Then, we added artisan crackers. One had rosemary and the other cracker was a garlic cracker. Don't forget to add the pistachio nuts and garnish with fresh herbs. We used rosemary last night. It looked amazing and delicious. Luiza recommended shopping for ingredients at Wegman's, Trader Joe's, or Whole Foods shopping stores. She creates boards that are vegan or she will cater to specialty boards. Her business is only 2 months old. Luiza recommended a Malbec or Sauvignon Blanc to drink with our boards. You can contact Luiza at @wanderlust boards on Instagram. Thanks Luiza for patiently taking us through the process of creating our charcuterie boards. It was so much fun and I learned a lot. Thanks Erik for planning and organizing this wonderful event. Congratulations on your first event being a great one. Thanks Holly for cohosting.
