Annoys the bleep out of me that most broadway shows come to Shea's and not here. I actually think this facility is better suited to live theater than Shea's. I've seen several shows here (from Rent to India Arie), have had a few graduations here, have even been to a few school orientations here in the atrium, and have performed here myself too. It's wonderful. My only complaint from seeing the Brian Setzer Orchestra perform their Christmas Concert here the other night, is that some seating (the middle back area) isn't optimally designed to see the stage well. Especially if you have tall people sitting in front of you. And actually, the Brian Setzer concert was SUPER loud. I was glad I had my noise-cancelling ear buds on me. I used them as ear plugs. The best show I've ever seen here was India Arie in 2006. It was AMAZING. I love her as a performer and the intimacy of this venue (we sat like 6th row) made is so amazing. More shows should go on here!!! BTW, if you're looking for better parking, park on the lake side of the Center (back past the Flint Village Apartments). You'll have to walk up very steep steps (kind of cagey when icy) but you'll walk right in. Great access point!

He fell HARD for the discipline and artistry there and was offered a scholarship at the end of the two weeks. Despite living an hour and a half south of the city, we decided to give it a try twice a week. Fast forward to this year: he has completed his fifth summer intensive at Neglia and attends class 6 days a week. Yes, we still live 1.5 hours away. My son has discovered -under his excellent teachers at Neglia- that he wants to dance professionally, and there is no one anywhere near us that matches the quality of instruction he gets there. Besides that, the close knit studio environment has made them feel like family at this point! Each dancer gets excellent personalized instruction and honest appraisals of their abilities and potential. I highly recommend them!

We then decided to add 2-3 ballet classes a week at Neglia to our already busy competitive dance schedule. The improvement in our daughter's technique was amazing. So much so that she decided to give up competitive dance and focus on ballet only, at Neglia Ballet. I should also mention that we live in Ontario, Canada and travel 45 minutes across the border to attend this wonderful ballet school.

Then we heard about ZPAC. Best parenting decision ever made to enroll her here. Stacy Zawadzki-Janusz has encouraged, challenged, and pushed justice to be her very best self and beyond. She pushes accountability and self esteem. When Justice thinks she can't do something, Stacy says yes you can. Her 2 teachers that also work there have done the same. They have been encouraging and sometimes strict when needed. They have been sounding boards when she is having a hard time. I can not thank them enough for everything they have done for my daughter. They treat us like family and that studio has become like a second home for my girl. I love them all dearly and am so proud to be part of the ZPAC-Stacy Zawadzki's Performing Arts Center family. Thank you Stacy and Marcia and Lena for all the hard work you put into shaping these young ladies into young women. I am forever grateful.

We've belonged to three ballet studios (we've moved a few times) and have been here the longest. This school impresses me with the level of quality instruction starting with the youngest kids. At a previous dance studio, the "Pre-ballet" or "Ballet I" classes were taught by young college students (and even one high school senior) who were trying to get teaching experience. Here, every teacher we have had has been a professional and has instructed the kids as such. The atmosphere is caring and loving but also fairly serious. You are following in the footsteps of many dancers who have attended the school over 52 years and have gone on to dance careers. The Nutcracker performance sells out at UB every year, and the end of the year recital (also at UB) is an enormous production. This is not the YMCA's music and movement class. They offer ballet, pointe, acro, contemporary, lyrical, hip hop, Broadway dance, jazz and tap, as well as adult ballet classes. The cost seems comparable to other dance studios in the area, and there is a discount for families. The school also offers camps in the summer, including a "Princess camp" for girls 8 and younger that seems very popular.

Lisa Taylor Academy is an incredible school and community. I studied ballet with Lisa Taylor for…read moreseven years, and I can't imagine a more supportive, high-level environment in which to learn about the arts, the human body, and teamwork. Lisa maintains the highest level of organization and discipline while radiating a warmth of personality and love of dance at all times. Her knowledge both of ballet itself and also the timeline of the development of the human body work together to prevent injury and ensure that skills are built over time, not pushed before a student is ready. (As a very active adult, I really appreciate that...I didn't destroy my body when I was 11!) Artistic expression is emphasized along with the pure physicality of dance. Musical selections are broad and varied, and Lisa always encourages listening to the character of a piece of music and allowing it to be a major part of the movement you create, even when working on an isolated skill for just a few minutes. The atmosphere that Lisa's studio creates is one of support and encouragement. I am still in touch with the friends that I made in her classes. Everyone has frustrating days in class, but even on those days I felt supported, valued, and respected by Lisa and my classmates. I think that experiencing the feeling of encouragement during a time of struggle is an invaluable part of learning anything, and you will find that at Lisa's studio 100% of the time. Lisa's studio also offers opportunities to perform as an ensemble in the community. Participating in productions for schools and community organizations was one of the best things about being Lisa's student! Teamwork takes on a new definition when you're in performance communicating non-verbally, and rehearsals offer a fabulous opportunity for older students to teach younger students new roles, or work with them on their own sequences. The feeling of completing a difficult performance onstage with no teacher telling you what to do is an unbelievable one for a student to have, and it means even more when you're doing it for an audience in your community. It's also nice to know that, unlike a once-a-year recital, the work that you've done to prepare the piece will be showcased again and again, as you continue to share it with more organizations around the city. I really can't express how wonderful of an experience I had as a student at Lisa Taylor Academy. The dance and non-dance lessons I had will stay with me forever. Go check it out!!!

On all of the occasions, The Owner Kolleen Fischer was unbecoming. I was really disappointed in the…read moreway this woman handled my child who is mixed with black when she came to dance on Saturday. Every Saturday, I was reminded that yeah, it is definitely because she is black. I had previously assumed it was simply her personality and wanted to think that my child wasn't being treated unfairly because she is black. Like I said it would happen each and every Saturday. I could think of a couple instances where I truly wondered if I should even bring my kid back. Once, when my daughter tried to give Kolleen a bag of goodies for the Halloween party, Kolleen held up her hands and "no, in there" as she threw her hands up. Instead of in a polite manner tell my daughter she can hand the candy to her teacher. I would always say hello and good morning to her when I would walk in and I wouldn't get a response as she stood about two steps away from us and the moment another mom would walk in she would make it her duty to speak to the parent and child. Despite finding it unpleasant, I continued to wish everyone a nice Saturday morning out of fairness. There was a time I questioned about what kind of costumes they will be wearing and what kind of event will be held, given that the dance school lacks recital materials and dance photos, unlike nearly every dance school we have been to. Kolleen said, "They have a little thing for the dancers in April, and they wear whatever I choose for them to wear." As a parent, I wanted to know what the charge covers, so I said that I was only inquiring because she was bringing up a payable fee. Her reaction, though, was a bit excessive. Another memorable incident occurred when my daughter expressed interest in doing the raffle boxes that were arranged in the foyer. I informed Kolleen that I would return immediately, as I needed to run to my car and grab up more singles. She agreed, and I returned in about sixty seconds. She was standing at the table when I asked if we could possibly purchase some tickets to put in the raffle box, she answered, "I guess," rolling her eyes. At that point, I decided that enough was enough and that I was tired of this woman's attitude toward us. As I was helping my daughter choose which raffle box she wanted to partake in, a father came up to me and told me about a dance event that was going to be happening and the dance school was selling tickets. I assumed it was the nutcracker event she had told me about when I first signed my daughter up, so I said, "Aw, baby, would you like to go to the nutcracker event with your dance school?" Kolleen emerged from the rear chamber and clarified that it wasn't the nutcracker. I nodded and didn't inquire further, but she felt compelled to let me know that there would be African dancers. I chuckled, turned to leave, and never came back. My kid loves dance, therefore one day I hope to find her a wonderful school. You are valuable, so don't push yourself if you don't feel accepted.
