What a horrible place to shop. I live in the neighborhood and curbed my Fred Meyer needs slowly because more and more, I hate shopping there... because, well, I guess once you get used to going elsewhere (Trader Joe's is around the corner and largely cheaper on many items), it's hard to believe that one building can contain so many unfriendly (unhappy?), unhelpful employees. The customer service counter, cashiers, workers in various parts of the store, all who almost plead with you not to ask them a question about something. The nicest, friendliest person in the store is the newly acquired security guy who now must check every person's receipt upon exit. Thanks for being cool, security guy. Live downtown for 10 years, four in the pearl six in goose hollow. Stadium Freddy's might as well be psycho Safeway on 10th and Jefferson cuz that's where they're at. Not safe in the garage not safe by The doors. Just got threatened by some punk ass kids in a handicap spot in the garage when I'm crippled in my friend has a broken leg. He and his friend were parked in the last handicap spot with no handicap plaque. Call customer service. Another joke because they're used to that. Not going in there let my friend out by the front door with her broken leg scooter, hope for the best. I'm a regular shopper at this Fred Myers since I live close by... Every time I go in to shop, I'm followed by employees. I love to cook and get ideas off Pinterest while walking around the store.... I see the staff looking and trying to be discreet. I guess tonight will be my last time shopping at Freddy's. Passive racism at its best... Portland Yelp loves local small business. My Yelp history is to review many and mostly small businesses. I'm stepping out to review a big business. Fred Meyer was local, until they were bought by Kroger, a large grocery concern. In fact Kroger is the largest American grocery. In my experience is that has been good for Portland and this store. By the way, the Fred Meyer variety tops most nationwide Krogers. I have friends in the wholesale organic produce world. Coops and Fred Meyer are on the list to sell to. Stores beginning with W and ending with t are not. So you will find organic produce at this store at a good price from local sources. This particular Fred Meyer has special things worth Yelping: deli and event space. The salad bar sometimes has cooked salmon along with all the accompanying salad ingredients. They get salmon cooked and frozen, so it is probably from another aquaculture country. But you cannot beat the price. The Fred Meyer salad bar is also a great source for crumbled cooked bacon and grated parmesan at a very good price. They have a pretty private and deserted upstairs eating area. And included is an event space which you can book. Many of their spaces have outdoor balcony spots. They are A-OK spaces for a business phone conference. New PDX date spot? They have just started to have tuna poke at the fresh seafood counter. The price is very attractive. At this writing $10, $9 on sale. Combine with other ingredients at home for a poke party! I would also say that every staffer without exception at this Fred Meyer I have encountered or queried has been helpful and spot on. read more

Their nearly total lack of customer service is astounding and their prices are much higher than Winco, Grocery Outlet, etc., although still lower than the boutique stores like Zupan's, Market of Choice, etc. and somewhat higher than Trader Joe's. It appears Kroeger doesn't read reviews or observe the interactions or maybe just doesn't care. Went to buy my monthly money order for rent before I did my shopping there. The customer service line for that department had over 10 people in line, and only one, inept and slow, employee working it. After 20 minutes, and only moving a little bit, I asked a Fred Meyer checker guy who had gotten in line behind me. "Why did they have just one guy working the line on the busiest day of the month" (This often happens) He said it was unfortunate and realized it was a frustrating wait. The inept, most UNPROFESSIONAL young man saw me talking, and shouted out at me, complaining, telling me to chill, that there was nobody else, how he'd had a 12 hour shift the day before. Easily loud enough for everyone around him to hear. I was shocked! I have been in the customer service industry all my life and how that young man behaved is the worst sort of customer service. When there was an unusually long wait in any of the businesses that I've worked at, I've always acknowledge the wait to the customers, apologized for it, and assured them I was and would continue to use the best of my abilities to limit the wait as much as possible. People feel seen that way, they feel that their valuable time is being taken into consideration and is cared about. This horrible young employee did the exact opposite of what good customer service looks and sounds like. Not coming back to Fred Meyer ever again! read more

Nice big grocery store with everything we needed. Plus, free parking in downtown Portland!

When I first moved to Portland over two years ago, this was our go-to grocery store. It was big, well stocked, had interesting items and things for sale and was clean and in good condition. There was a time when they actually sold Morel mushrooms in bulk here. Cut to the past half year or so... the shattered glass on the soft drink case has been there, taped together, for at least the last 3 months. The bathroom is NEVER open for at least the last six months. The up escalator has been broken for at least the last three weeks. The selection is falling but not nearly as fast as the quality of the produce and meat they carry. Also the past couple of times, there has been NO ONE working the deli counter, AT ALL... at 7pm on a SATURDAY! And when you do get someone, they are incompetent half of the time... it becomes a gamble and hassle to see if you can get some decent lunchmeat there these days. It is so sad to see the sorry state of affairs this one good store is in now. They are lucky no other big name grocer is nearby otherwise they would probably be out of business now... as it is, with the constant stream of homeless people camping in their parking lot, the constant disrepair, and dropping quality, it is still a possibility. I am going to start going down the street to the Safeway in the Pearl district or the QFC going towards Beaverton, Enough is getting enough here, if your store looks like garbage, what does that tell you about the quality of the people and food that resides there? read more

In addition to continuing price errors usually always in favor of the store. Restroom is like a war torn battleground about half the time, and the code locked door doesn't shut correctly on its own, therefore, it attracts vagrants and transients. Often time things that do not belong in restrooms are littered, such as alcohol related shop lifting stuff and other miscellaneous litter from packages from vagrancy related shop lifting. read more

When I come to Oregon, I always enjoy an occasional stop at Fred Meyer. This chain actually dipped it's toe into California (Chico) many years ago, but maybe the idea of paying sales tax sent them packing back to the Beaver State. Last Sunday, I was taking a zigzag path from the Pearl District to Nob Hill, and the sight of this Freddy's opened up right in front of me. And since I remembered that my son needed an alarm clock for his room, why not find a cheap one here? So I did and on sale! The store itself seems to be on an economic cusp, so like Berkeley the range of clientele is very diverse and sometimes entertaining (especially street folks and narcissistic progressives). The store itself seems to emphasize groceries more than the "housewares" that you see at other Fred Meyer locations. Hence, you need to go elsewhere for you last minute camping items. Otherwise the store is roomy, clean, and a pleasure to wander around. I could easily imagine this Fred Meyer as my neighbourhood grocery store. read more

Every Northwesterner has a love-hate relationship with Freddy's. From birth, we've all been brainwashed by their marketing jingles and can easily finish the phrase "What's on your list today..." on command. Yet after reading the previous review I'm a little confused. Wiki will tell us that not all Fred Meyer stores conform to the conventional hypermarket format that the majority of stores do, and this specific Freddy's is a little different than most as it tries to take the 'super' out of market. Set up to compete with the new additions of Zupans, TJs, and Whole Foods, This specific Freddys attempts to camouflage itself in tree lined NW Portland and sneak in as yet another hoity-toity organic sanctuary. I'm standing at check out while writing this review. I'm giving it such low stars because this is the 3rd time in a row I have had a checker that is less then friendly. I asked Amber how she was since she didn't ask me at all. And that is the only thing she said to me up to this point and my bill so far is 339.97 which should give you a good idea of how long I've been standing hear. Usually this is what I look forward to the most about Freddy's is the Friendly service!!! And of course the cleanliness and the selection of food and other fun stuff I don't really need.;) The manager is awesome! He's personally helped me a few times. Maybe he should give customer service classes to his employees. I hate having a good shopping trip and then end it with a grumpy person that hates being there. Update again - Now the bakery, deli, cheese are moved to the new area in the store as well. The store had a "grand opening" for these departments including samples and tastings this past weekend. I liked that their signs proudly pointed out it was the "Stadium" Fred Meyer. Murray's Cheese is having its own grand opening 9/21 and I'm curious to see what they dish up. New to the store is a grilled cheese section, which the other Fred Meyer Murray's Cheese locations don't have. This location also now features a wine bar and sushi "train style" bar similar to the Hawthorne Blvd. location. I am curious to see how grocery and general merchandise end up re-arranged now that work can begin in the old store. read more

I like the Fred Meyers around the downtown area. Although I go to this one the most. Some really good sale items that are nice surprises. I love a good deal. It has most things might need from a grocery store. Most of the employees I've interacted with are friendly and helpful. Keep in mind this place was completely rebuilt and re-opened in February 2015, so older reviews and photos aren't really relevant anymore. PROS: -Very clean, new and big. It just looks nice inside. -Free underground parking. Not a ton of it, but there is street parking as well all around the perimeter, so unless it's super busy, you should have absolutely no problem finding a spot. -Pretty good selection of groceries, and I use the pharmacy too, which I haven't had any problems with and seems fast. -Good selection of non-typical grocery items. I bought two fans here and a coffee grinder. I probably could've found a cheaper coffee grinder elsewhere, but the fans were the same price as a suburban Target. They even have a section of Timbers gear and Nike training clothes. -A Starbucks inside and some nice outdoor, second- and third-level seating with nice views of the stadium across the street. -Murray's cheese stand inside with a good selection of cheese and some pretty tasty sandwiches you can order too. -Staff is friendly and nice. CONS: -The prepared foods selection sucks. They don't make any fresh guacamole, salsa, soup, etc. All of these kinds of items are shipped in pre-packaged from outside companies or Kroger headquarters. -The prepared foods they do make in-house aren't very good. I've tried a few of their pasta and vegetable salads and they just taste super fatty and tangy and weird. They are definitely not the same quality as you would find, for instance, at Whole Foods. -They don't sell pizza there! The best you can hope for is frozen/refrigerated pizzas shipped in that you have to bake yourself. They don't cook pizza there that you can buy. (There is a Papa Murphy's next door, but it's "take and bake" pizza that you also have to cook yourself.) -The bakery also is a bit weak; their bread selection doesn't really impress me. I wouldn't be surprised if the bread is shipped in or if they ship in frozen dough and bake it. I've just had better rolls and baguettes from other grocery stores. -The bottle return situation is awful. The area smells weird, has trash people leave there and sticky spilled beverages everywhere, but worse, the bottle return machines are the slowest I have ever tried to use in my life. You have to stick your hand pretty far inside the hole to place the bottle, a little flap swings down to cover the hole, it takes like 5 seconds to process, and then the flap retracts so you can add another bottle. It sucks. If you have more than a few bottles (I bring like 200 at a time), go somewhere else. -It's a little pricey, but I guess that's par for the course in this neck of the woods. read more

Oh my, this is shopping heaven- better than Super Walmart and Super Target. This is like a grocery store with electronics, clothing, etc. Like reviewers mentioned here, there are some undesirable folks here but it's inner city. Neighborhood is okay to say the least. Just don't go wandering in the middle of night for no particular reason except looking for trouble. Our hotel was just down the street so no biggie. However, we thought it best to avoid the whole city adventure at 9PM since we were dead tired after zoo and gardens. We did get some fruits and vegetables to bring back to hotel. Oh yeah, Oregon doesn't charge you for paper bags like California now. We were afraid of the plastic bag tax. Fred Meyer does give you credit for bringing your own bags though. read more

This place is literally your catch-all of grocery stores, and honestly you could probably live in here for the day if you so wish. There's also a parking lot underneath it, and although it was pretty full we were able to find a spot, which is pretty useful in any downtown situation. read more

I was familiar with several other Freddy's so I was happy to see that there was one within walking distance when I moved to NW this summer. REALLY disappointed. I try to post positive reviews because I've owned a business and I know that the loudest voices are the angry voices. But I'm making an exception here because this is seriously the WORST large market I have ever shopped in so many ways. And all of the problems can be traced directly to poor management. If employees generally have zero customer orientation and a negative attitude it is because of poor management. If a customer has to waste half their shopping time searching for items because items/sections seemed to be constantly moving, it is poor management. I have been shopping here for only 4 months, but in that time I have interacted with only 3 employees who were actually helpful and seemed to enjoy their jobs. I didn't get their names at the time, but one was a guy in the deli/sliced meat a couple of weeks ago, a woman who seemed to be everywhere and was particularly helpful in the baking supplies section the weekend before Halloween, and a woman at the checkout tonight who actually asked me how I was when she started ringing up my groceries and wished me good day when I left. Usually the employees here are sullen and act like they would rather be anyplace else. I wish they were anyplace else too. And, every time I am here it actually feels depressing. Maybe it's the lighting. Maybe it's the fact that huge shelving areas are empty or barely stocked. Maybe it's the ugly warehouse floors. But mostly it is a combination of all of the above. Every time I go to this store I hope that it is better. Every-time I am disappointed. Today was the last straw. I needed an item that was on top of the shelves, out of reach. There were rolling stairs right there but they had a chain across so clearly for employees only so I went looking for an employee. I found three clustered at a computer station near the tools and walked up. No one responded. I spoke up and asked a woman who was looking at her cell phone? for help. No response from her to me except to ask one of the other employees to call someone. I said what aisle I would be in and walked back to my cart. 5 minutes passed. No one showed. I then found another employee who told me I should press a button on a locked glass case (which were where???). I walked back to my cart. After 7 minutes I saw 2 of the employees who were in the first group standing in the middle of an aisle talking. I literally waved my arms to get their attention and said, "I'm still waiting here after 7 minutes". Now they both walk toward me. One was the woman with the hand held device who may have been training the other. Not a word from her...only a unpleasant look. The other employee climbed the steps and I finally had the item. Before, I was already at the point where this store was a last resort for things I could not find at Whole Foods, Trader Joes or New Seasons. Now I will order from Amazon anything I can't get at one of the other stores. Kroger/Fred Meyer- please, if you are not going to operate this store well, sell to another company that will. Now it is just wasted space in a neighborhood that could use a WELL RUN large supermarket. read more

Don't shop here. The manager wants to save his shopping carts and not his customer's lives. The cart wheels lock up so you can't roll your groceries to your car in the parking lot. The manager at the FM Stadium store said, "the carts are more important than customer safety." We had a great experience with Marvin as our checkout clerk this morning. With all of the chaos in the world right now and so many people doing massive shopping, Marvin was the only checkout clerk in the store. He was cheerful and competent despite having a huge line of customers. He was even able to help my husband get access to the locked shave cabinet after three other employees told us there was no one in the store with keys! Thank you Marvin! I bought Simple Truth organic salad mix this morning. When I opened it this afternoon, I found it had bugs crawling in it. My husband returned to the store with the salad mix and receipt but they refused to give us a refund because there was no one working in customer service in the middle of the afternoon (though there was supposed to be). So we had to make 2 trips to the store and still no refund for inedible food. You would think a supermarket would be interested in removing a bug infested product from its shelves, but apparently not. Pretty shocking. read more

This is probably THE worst pharmacy I've ever used...I split my time between two states, so using a Kroger pharmacy was important to me for convince of transferring prescriptions. However, it took them 2 weeks to transfer my prescriptions and 5 visits to the pharmacy. Once I come back into town in the new year, I will be transferring my prescriptions somewhere else. The Fred Meyer Stadium store over the last month raised the prices of almost everything in the store 25%. And they are posting prices based on "if you buy 4 or 5" But the single price is now 25% higher. And on top of that the attitude of the staff is rude to say the least. Now that the remodel is complete, this Fred Meyer is pretty nice. It is beautiful and open. It is a typical grocery store with the added bonus of a sushi bar, Starbucks, a salad bar, oh and a wine bar! I like that I can depend on Fred Meyer for all of my needs; makeup, birthday cards, organic food items, etc. Sometimes I even go here to eat lunch before shopping (better to eat before, yes?) You can go up a level and enjoy your meal with a view of Providence Park, which is right across the street. That being said, I do not understand why they needed to have three levels of basically nothing but a few tables, when there is not enough parking. The parking garage is TINY, and only one level. The outside lot is also small. The bathrooms are an issue as well. Only one in the front, and the other one? Up three flights of stairs in the back! Sometimes, I have to cut my shopping short due to peeing urgency. I also feel that since the remodel, the store is rather disjointed and confusing. It is great during the day, but as another Yelper mentioned, the crowd can get a little sketchy, especially at night. There are usually homeless outside if you park in the outdoor lot. If you park in the garage, it's better. Sometimes when I go late at night, alone, I do get an eerie feeling. There aren't many people around except the ones returning cans. Maybe some security would be nice! I've never had a problem though. read more

I absolutely love this Freddy. Always have found the staff to be friendly and professional. Sometimes they deal with a difficult clientele but in my many years of shopping here have never been treated rudely or have gotten the impression the staff is disgruntled. It's not Trader Joe's deli-feeling not does it compare with Wholefoods: Fred Meyer is an Oregon-based chain (having lived on both East Coast and LA, Oregon is the first place where I've shopped at Fred Meyer). Located on NW 20th Place, right across the Providence Stadium this Fred Meyer doesn't look that big from the outside but make no mistake: it's huge! Hence the fact they sell everything one needs on a daily basis. Extension cables? Plungers? Big orchid? Organic fresh produce? A pastry brush? Just to name a few items I had on my list: I found it all in this store. Certain items are less expensive than Trader Joe's and others are not. Overall I'd say it's good value for money with excellent customer service and experience from 7am till late at night. There's a sushi-conveyor-belt so one can sit down and enjoy freshly made sushi after grocery shopping. Truth being said: don't expect the quality of Bamboo Sushi, but also don't expect to pay much. It's all about the balance and for the money I paid, I enjoyed a little bit of sushi. Olympia Provisions products are being sold here, great pate and salami. The bread department offers a huge variety of every single carb one can wish for. Grilled chicken and ribs for those days you don't feel like cooking. I will have to divide my shopping time between Trader Joe's, Zupan Market and Fred Meyer: each offers their own good stuff. I'm definitely coming back to this store!! read more

I just left the pharmacy. I take care of my mother. I called in her HEART medicine BEFORE the 4th knowing they're closed. Showed up today at 2:30. Told it would be another 30-40 minutes. It's now 7:36. I went in and they still didn't have it. I waited EVEN LONGER. Then I realized they were sitting down and laughing amongst themselves until I stood up. The deli here sucks, tell me if I'm wrong people.. You know EXACTLY what I mean, felt it yourselves on more than one occasion.. Kind of "I'll get there when I feel like it and you'll like it" kind of attitude.. Lack of service seems to be written in the manual.. Salad bar a bad joke open / closed with the consistency of a blue moon, odd items like pepperoni.. Pepperoni salad anyone? No? Hmm.. Parm, red onions, bacon bits, olives, blue cheese chunks, red peppers, egg, tofu.. these are a few of my favorite things, (and yours too) that just don't show up.
