I have had numerous rings sized in my life --- numerous. I would recommend if anyone is considering having repairs done here, to take the ring elsewhere.
In the past sizing has always been the same procedure and I've always had good results until now. I've even had several rings sized at this location with good results in the past .... Until this time but it will be the last now that I understand their policy.
I discovered that the jewelers at this location consider the customer more knowledgeable than their own highly trained jewelry experts working at the counters. It's not that I've been trained in sizing. Actually, I have no clue how big a half size or quarter size is. I've always left it up to the clerks to help in that field. I now know even if they measure the ring, measure you and "guess" wrong, you're the one who pays for a second sizing. "What" you say? Well, actually, that's the way it works at the Longview Fred Meyer Jewelry store so be very careful before you take anything there.
Along with my daughter I took a recently purchased ring in to have it sized. I tried the ring on for the clerk and showed her I could get it on but it was tight. She measured the ring and measured my finger. She suggested we upsize it half a size. Okay, that worked for me. What do I know about sizing? Nothing. Leave it to the expert or so I thought. Then, she spoke to the jeweler since the ring had a silver center and two gold bands on it. He indicated he wouldn't be able to do the gold bands and it would come back with a blank where the sizing occurred. That was okay.
When I went to pick up the ring, it fit exactly as it did when I dropped it off. No band on the back and it was still just as tight getting it on or off. My other rings fit exactly as before so there was no huge finger weight gain - if they ever happens. This time this clerk suggested we take it up ¼ size. She's the expert. I had no idea how much ¼ size was but that worked for me and she jotted down the new size it was supposed to be. There was no mention of an additional sizing charge.
When I got the call to pick it up, she asked if I had been told there was a second charge. Absolutely not. Without the band in back and the same tight fit, I figured the jeweler didn't really size it. How would I know? She told me to mention that when I picked it up. I did but it didn't matter. I had wrongly trusted their jewelry experts. I guess next time I'll crawl over the counter and do the work myself. The results might be the same.
This time the ring did have a blank band on the back where it had been sized. There was no blank band the first time when the sizing was supposed to have been larger.
This is when I discovered that the customer is the expert in the sizing. If their jewelry professionals suggest a sizing (and they do), you pay even if they are wrong. Joni said she gave a 20% discount but I still paid for two sizings to get the ring to fit. Obviously, it's not the money as I can guarantee that the store will lose way more than that fee over this.
Customers are not trained in jewelry sizing. You take your jewelry to experts for their advice. They've been trained to help you. However, if you receive bad advice, Fred Meyer Jewelry makes you pay for it. Any jewelry purchases or repairs in the future will obviously not be handled by Fred Meyer Jewelry stores. read more
