Fraumunster Church
Anton K.

It will cost adults 5 CHF. Children up to 16 years are free. It is the audio-guide in my opinion that makes the experience worth while. The audio-guide gives you information about the church, a select organ piece (Bach) from the 6959 pipe organ, a sample sermon, etc... The guide is 1 hour and 15 minutes long. You have an option of choosing the brochure instead of the guide. Note that bathroom facilities are not open to the public and interior photos are not permitted. The exterior of the church is Romanesque while the interior is Swiss Reformation architecture. So the interior is rather austere in compliance with Reformation ideology. For many it is the five Marc Chagall stained glass windows installed in 1970 (prophets, Jacob, christ, zion and law) that draw peoples attention. Chagall is depicted in the yellow window. The colors are super vibrant and best seen in the morning light. To a lesser extent the Augusto Ciacometti (1940) stained glass window and Paul Bodmer fresco painting of Zurich saints in the cloister are attractions. There is a crypt which dates to 835 A.D..with a small museum at that lower level. Guided tours conducted by accredited tour guides are available.

If you visit Zurich's old town you will spot this one right away thanks to the tall and beautiful clock tower. The church is lovely overall, but the real star are a series of stained glass windows by Marc Chagall. I remember reading about these in the guide book on my flight out to Zurich and wondering how worthwhile a visit to this site might be. I visited around noon on a bright sunny day, the experience seeing these works of art was extremely moving. Not for any religious reason, for me it was purely about the astonishing beauty of those windows. I just sat and took them in for about 15 minutes and could have stayed longer.

The Fraumünster Church (Women's Minster). Beautiful.

The Fraumünster Church (Women's Minster), founded in 853, is an important and historic church in Zürich. It was founded by Louis II, a grandson of Charlemagne. Its' main claim to fame today are the Marc Chagall windows, which, when I visited, having been swept in on a tide of tour groups, I was not allowed to photograph. There is no charge to enter.

The smaller and more elegant church, which is opposite the larger munster and is a feature for photographs and the views across zurich.

It was first built in 1231 and completed in 1269 as a monastery of the Dominican Order. It has had extensive renovations, the most recent significant one completed in 1967-1968. The pipe organ was installed in 1503 and then broken following the Reformation. In 1879, a new organ was installed and that one was in turn replaced in 1923. The church is open and I was not disturbed while I entered and sat for a few minutes peacefully. A service was getting ready to begin and I was not interested in attending, so I departed. However, if you're approaching this religious facility as a tourist, this is certainly one of the most ordinary churches you'll ever tour in Europe. The exterior of Predigerkirche adjacent to the Zentralbibliothek is extraordinary. But I wouldn't go out of my way to tour the interior. With plain white walls and a total lack of embellishments, it won't wow visitors like other churches across the continent. But the ceiling is admittedly spectacular. Honestly, the best pictures you'll take here are of the majestic clock tower outside.

The area in front of the church had rows of tables that were being set up for a lovely post-service lunch gathering for its parishioners. How cool is that? Actually, the tables may have been in front of the Grossmünster now that I look back at it. Either way, it's cool that they even do that. We crossed over the bridge to this square after taking in the views of the Grossmünster. It's a major gathering place in Zurich's Old Town. There were many locals having brunch at the cafés, and tourists learning about the history of the square and the guild houses around it. The Münster Fountain was particularly impressive. What's cool is that these fountains provide excellent drinking water. There's an area with a tap where you can fill up a pitcher or water bottle. It appears that Winston Churchill was here in 1946. There is a plaque commemorating his "United States of Europe" speech at the University of Zurich. It's in front of the guild house called "Zunfthaus zur Meisen" where he visited during his time here. It's a part of the city that shouldn't be missed. You're going to pass through it anyway to get to the Fraumünster and to Lindenhof Hill. It's worth it just to walk along the cobblestone streets of Old Town.
