Franklin & Downs will always have a special place in our hearts. As we walked in, with no appointment and in a panic because the original mortuary that picked up my Grandmother was a disaster, Felisha took us in and calmly walked us through a process to get my Grandmother's remains transferred to Franklin, and made it happen same day. There was a bit of a dynamic going on, as everyone was distraught leaving the previous mortuary, but Felisha handled it with grace. After getting arrangements finalized, our pastor cancelled at the last minute, and Franklin & Downs arranged to assist us DAY OF. They claim to be respectful and pride themselves with doing a great job but we experienced the complete opposite. They were pushy, negative, and not very professional. They brought the family more stress and uneasiness throughout the most difficult process one can go through. This is the second time we have used Franklin and Downs and received the same excellent service as before. Melissa was our contact from start to finish. She was extremely knowledgeable, consistently available, friendly in person and on the phone. We had specific requests for the Obituary and their Tribute page, and she was able to accommodate us with changes and explain details. Melissa handled submission of the obituary to Modesto Bee including picture. We had questions about military honors and she started filling in the application for us and obtained the US flag for our ceremony. She often knew answers or found them quickly on topics ranging from cremation to internment. Melissa was clear about prices from the start and final charges were a little below her estimate. I cannot thank Spencer and those at Franklin & Downs for making the out-of-state burial of my mother as stress-free and painless as such an otherwise tragic event could be. Though Spencer is young enough to be my son, he acted with the compassion, courtesy and professionalism of someone much older. Because I had selected F & D through Optimal Hospice who took care of Mom, Spencer reached out to me the day after to arrange an appointment at my convenience to discuss arrangements. We stayed in touch via phone and email throughout the process (just let him know your preferred times and means of communication). We had to ship my loved one's body from CA to MI. Spencer took the time to explain every part of the process involved, as well as the cost and requirements. He offered advice, guidance and recommendations to make it easier. When dealing with sensitive information about the preparation and shipping process, he was careful to caution us first that it might be "TMI" and asked us several times if we were okay with knowing the answers (we were). But that kind of courtesy is very much appreciated. There were clothing and personal items I wanted to be included in the casket and Spencer listened and allowed them all, making a written list for our records and so that the receiving home knew what to include. Two things cemented the fifth star for me: First, one of the reasons I selected F & D because they are owned by Carriage Services who also own funeral homes in Michigan; I thought it would be easier and less expensive to send my mother to an affiliate, even though the one in Michigan was 25 minutes away from the cemetery. Spencer made calls on my behalf and found out the cemetery's preferred funeral home was not only just a mile away, but also over $1000 less than the Carriage funeral home I had planned to use! (I have also reviewed A.J. Desmond & Sons in Michigan.) Second, because the Michigan home and cemetery each had their own costs, Spencer was able to have them add ALL their charges (and that of the cargo airline, Eagle Wings) to the F & D bill so I could pay everything at once and not have to deal with any billing or payment issues in Michigan during the burial. That was a major stress-saver! All my family had to focus on was our own trip and the event itself. Death is something no one wants to deal with but everyone will have to eventually, and Franklin & Downs, through Spencer, made the process as seamless and stress-free as it could have possibly been. I give them my highest recommendation--and deepest gratitude. read more

Spencer was to help us through this difficult and stressful time. I had called him during the time my grandma was in hospice care. Once she had passed I had informed him his exact words "OH". Who would say that specially a person in this field.? We originally wanted to have the service done on Saturday but the cemetery fee was too expensive. So I called him left 2 messages with 2 different receptions at around 11 and 1. He nor anyone else return my calls. I then called around 3:30 - 4 multiple times, finally spoke with another receptionist. She said she'll have to get number down and have him return my call because there about to close. So they were done for the day without giving me a call back to confirm a service I had questions. Which was going to be done that same week. They didn't not make this difficult, stressful and painful time any easier. read more

Navaz was the funeral director that helped my family with the passing of my mother, who died on 12/9. We were very worried about trying to get her burial service before Christmas and Navaz stepped in and helped us pull it off before the major holidays, with full blown Covid restrictions. Navaz is sweet, kind and very professional in what she does. She will answer any concerns for you and is very through in details of what to expect next. My family had a unexpected emergency come up the same day as my moms burials service so some could not make it out and Navaz went out of her way to film the service on her personal phone just to make sure my family that could not make it would still be able to see our moms graveside service. I'd have to say the only thing that made the process bearable was the people at Franklin and Downs. Specifically Kristi AhYou. I felt like we were so lost and grief stricken and she took the time to make sure everything was taken care of. The ceremony, the setup and the viewing went smoothly and she walked us through each step. Honestly she was God sent not just through the funeral process but in our talks. She helped my family on a personal level understand exactly what to expect and was sensitive to our feelings. In all my life, I have dealt with death more than most unfortunately. From the time I was very young I've attended funeral services of all types and for many different people. Without a doubt Franklin & Downs Funeral Home is by far the greatest place to turn to in a time in ones life when they've lost the most dearest to them. This is a late review, but considering we are still getting correspondence on our mother's funeral arrangement cost I will write this review. When we left the establishment on Jan 19th, 2016, we were paid in full at a 0 balance and was informed by the rep Kristi Ah You, that the we were paid in full and that our mother will be on the flight the following day. As we were all driving to our different airports we find out that our mother will not be making the flight home with us as they made an error in how they scheduled her flight and now it was our responsibility to pay this outrages cost of $2,669 more than what we already paid in full because of their error. We spent the whole drive to LAX on the phone fighting this and was finally able to get help from another manager at another location that made sure our mother made her flight for her funeral back home on the islands. Today, this company continues to have us relive this horrible event they put us through by sending letters to our sister whom has been handling this along with me and my siblings. My sister has lost her own child at the age of 8, our brother, father and recently our mother. This has been a horrible experience that we endured with this company, threats that we would not have our mother on a flight because of their error was terrifying. I do not recommend this company to anymore, to have to face what we did as family. A family that as of Jan 19th, 2016 were informed we were paid in full with our receipts showing a zero balance to have to go through what we did is not acceptable. They should be ashamed of themselves and the pain they put my family and i through. They will not get the balance that came after we were paid in full due to their error. My sister and I were driving to see our father at the care home he was in on Saturday. As we passed Franklin & Downs on McHenry, we decided to stop by and see if anyone was there and talk about pre-arrangements for our father. The office was closed, but Bart Au You was at the front desk to meet an appointment he had and saw us through the glass door. He opened the door and invited us in. Bart offered to meet with us either later that evening or the next day and discuss the arrangements we wanted. When we arrived at our father's bedside, we were with him for 10 minutes when he passed away. I immediately called Bart's cell phone, which he had given us earlier, and he advised how to go about having our father placed in their care. The staff worked with us in making the arrangements and were really helpful and made this difficult time so much easier. Kristi, Spencer, Bart, Navaz and the other staff were very accommodating to have the funeral during the week that my brother would be here due to his bereavement from work. Each one that worked both services (as we had a private burial), were respectful and very helpful. I will be using this funeral home again and recommend them to everyone. read more

It has taken me seven months to finally get around to writing this review. My family and I had to lay my dad to rest in June 2015. I had the privilege of working with Kristi Ah You, who helped me make funeral arrangements. I had never planned a funeral before. Kristi and her staff made it easy for me the entire way through. First of all, when you enter the building, there is a staff at he front office to greet you and offer you water or coffee. The entire staff were dressed professionally. The atmosphere was not gloomy. It was calm and actually serene with soothing music playing throughout the building. When Kristi took me to the back, she showed so much care and concern. She was patient. She let me cry. She was more concerned about me than taking care of the arrangements. She wanted to make sure I was okay and ready. She told me to take all the time I needed. I thank her for than as it was very overwhelming. After a date was set and payments have been made, Kristi and her staff consistently checked in on me as the day approached. My family did not have a suit for my dad, so Kristi had her personal shopper at Macy's pick out a suit for him, which was perfect for my dad's complexion. They did a wonderful job with his complexion, as well. My dad looked like he was sleeping peacefully. When the day came for his viewing, Kristi and her staff played the DVD tribute of my dad for visitors to see. The viewing room was big enough to accommodate our large Asian families. There was a section in the back of the viewing room with water, coffee, sugar, creamer, Kleenex, and a (clean) bathroom nearby for guests. The day before his service, I met with Kristi to go over everything. She made a memory/autograph book for my dad with his pictures in them, as well...at no charge. She made sure that the flowers were perfect and that there will be no technical glitches during the service. Kristi even knows more about the Buddhist tradition than I do! She knew how long the monks would take for their prayers, and how long they need at the crematorium. The day of his service went as smoothly as it could go. My dad's casket was the exact same one we had picked out of the catalog. The flower arrangements were still fresh from the day of the viewing. There were no issues with the visuals or sound systems. We had no problems at the crematorium in Ceres, as well. The urn in which my dad's remains are in is the exact one we ordered. For my very first time planning a funeral, Franklin & Downs, Kristi and her staff, they went above and beyond their services. They made the process as easy as possible for me and my family. My father passed away and I had never planned a funeral before in my life. I called Kristi at Franklin & Downs after business hours and I was a complete mess. Right away I knew she was a special person. She came in the next day, a Sunday and met with me and answered all of my questions. Kristi Ah You, you really have a gift of comfort and you are not only great at the planning and the details but you knew exactly how much I could take and gently discussed all the fine details and decision making with me incrementally which was important. Kristi really made a very hard time, a very painful time,... a little less painful. Living In Southern California, I had to plan everything from six hours away. Kristi and I had to speak on the phone, email and text. She always made herself available to Me and always responded promptly. My fathers service was beautiful. I was a little worried as my father had a very special way of shaving his "handle bar mustache" and when I saw him, it was absolutely perfect. We had a slide show, she made all the flower arrangements, and even asked at the services if we could bring in his Harley Davidson to the chapel. My dad would have loved to show it off to everyone it was awesome, I had never thought of doing that!! We ended his service with a beautiful candle ceremony and played all of my dads favorite music as people were arriving. . I hope I never have to do this again but if I do she is the only person I would ever want to work with. Here are some pictures. I am from out of the area so when I stopped by today to pick up the death certificates Kristi had recommended a local place for my husband and I to have dinner, then we went there and she surprised us by picking up our tab. In the most trying of times Franklin and Downs was a breath of fresh air. My wife's mother had died and she was devastated. Because it was a Covid-19 related death, it was hard trying to find a place to handle our family's needs. The first call with Navaz at 5:30 in the morning was professional and compassionate where she assured me they could handle our needs for a reasonable price. After several calls to other funeral homes, some cheaper, some more expensive, our first stop was to Franklin and Downs, and although Navaz was tied up with what looked to be a rather large service she took the time to stop and convey her condolences and assure us that David would take good care of us. David exceeded all our expectations on every level and we couldn't have asked for a better experience. When my father passed away unexpectedly, his wife was lucky enough to find Kristi, Stacy, and the rest of the staff at Franklin and Downs to help us through this extremely difficult time. She and her two young kids are new to the United States, hardly spoke English, and had no friends or family in the neighborhood. Somehow, Kristi worked to coordinate the funeral services seamlessly by the time I arrived, even going so far as to call the local Buddhist and Asian communities to help. Not only that, she showed a level of genuine empathy and personal commitment to the situation that touched myself and everyone else involved.
