This place is a spa for your teeth!!! Long review, but worth it. Full disclosure, I hadn't been to the dentist in almost a decade. I was terrified. I knew, however, that I could no longer neglect my teeth. Choosing Dr. Hsu's office was the best decision I could have made for myself. Honestly, I am just so impressed with the staff, with the office itself, and the doctors here have the best hands in the business. Seriously, from the moment I called their office, I knew this was the gonna by my dentist. The staff is incredibly nice. They empathized with my fears/concerns, and then went above and beyond to make me comfortable. Not only was the staff the best, but the office itself is a beautiful office. It's the care that they have for the little details that really made an impression. They provide you with sunglasses, so that the overhead lights you are staring into don't hurt your eyes. I know it seems like a small, silly detail, but when someone has their hands in your mouth for almost 2 hours, you want to be comfortable. Oh, and I can't forget to talk abut, Dr. Chen, who has the most amazing bed side manners. She's absolutley incredible. Before we even got started, she took the time to listen to my story and walk me through what she was seeing and how to best to go about healing my mouth. Her and the assistant staff always walked me through what they were gonna do before just diving in. It makes a difference when a dentist is up front about what is happening and actually takes the time to walk you through it, and continue to walk you through what is happening while they are treating you. I left my first appointment with zero anxiety and for the first time looked forward to coming back. For more context, my next 2 visits would be 2-hr sessions each because I needed a super deep cleaning and a few fillings. Never in my life did I think my gums would be able to handle this. And this is what I mean when I say they have the best hands in the business. Although my gums were a little sore the next day, not once was I ever afraid or in pain, even with the deep flossing. I even got shots in my mouth!!! It's not that I didn't feel them, but I barely felt the shots. This is how good this place is. I'm sorry for the long post. I'm just someone who is proud of finally getting the courage to see the dentist and I could not have picked a better place. I went from thinking I'll just let my teeth do what they're gonna do to someone who is excited to see the dentist. This doesn't just happen. It's this office. I feel like I need to warn other people, don't get TMJ Botox here. I've been left with horrible facial asymmetry for several months. Hopefully Dr. Hsu has good intentions, but I don't think he is a skilled Botox provider. The injection placement felt obviously very asymmetrical during the procedure and sure enough the results speak to that. Looking back, I also felt like he didn't spend enough time understanding my TMJ. He did not examine me at all before proceeding with the Botox, and he didn't pay much attention to my symptoms. For example, I explained several times that I don't get migraines with my TMJ, but he wanted to proceed with injection sites for migraines. I had to very clearly say once again, about 30 seconds before the injections, that I didn't want treatment for migraines. Just don't get Botox here. read more

I am a new patient to Dr. Tsu which makes the treatment and care I have received even more remarkable. I decided to switch to a dentist closer to home and Dr. Tsu was very highly recommended on my community's mother's group. During our initial consultation he was friendly and patient and kind. He mentioned I had a filling that might need to be removed in the future. My teeth had other plans and on Christmas Eve the filling and tooth broke. As soon as the holiday was over Dr. Tsu fit me in and made time for what would have been a temporary crown with extra time created for me to come back the next day. As I am somewhat phobic of dentists and dental surgery (having had quite a few unsuccessful ones) I asked if there was any way he could do a permanent crown on that same day. Dr. Tsu and his assistants stayed late into the evening, built and created a crown for me while I waited watching a movie, and did the procedure in one sitting. He was so calming and kind. It made what would have been a very difficult and painful experience more than palatable. I cannot recommend Dr. Tsu highly enough. read more

I had to cancel my appointment due to unforeseen work obligations. Today I received a bill for 75 dollars. The bill was blank, no description of services rendered. There is ZERO mention anywhere on their website about a 72 hour cancellation policy. It was not mentioned when making the appointment or during any conversation with their receptionist. I only found out about it after getting their voicemail when I cancelled the appointment. Be warned. I'll be following this up with a complaint to the DCA. read more

I worked for Dr. Hsu for almost a year. And it's my pleasure to write a review. I will truly miss working here. Dr. Hsu offered many great opportunities to grow and learn and was very flexible with my schedule. All of my coworkers were absolutely amazing to work with. I am truly sad to leave due to moving out of the area. I worked as a hybrid (front office & back office) which was an amazing experience. Dr. Hsu is a great dentist with a lot of knowledge - he also was very patient with my children when they would came in for there cleaning appointment. Anyone would be lucky enough to work here. Out of all of my careers/jobs this is truly one of my top favorites. I will miss everyone dearly and wish everyone the best of luck. My daughter has been seeing Dr. Frank Hsu since she was two. Four years later, she still very excited about every checkup even though she has cavity-prone teeth. She has had two extractions and multiple fillings with Dr. Hsu but she still looks forward to her biannual visits. From the time we walk in until the end of the visit it's a very smooth experience everyone makes us feel welcome while the office and treatment rooms are bright and nicely decorated. Dr. Hsu makes every effort to make sure my daughter is comfortable and relaxed. He reminds her that he's there to count her teeth and gives her time to get used to the feel of the explorer in her mouth before starting anything. He has a light touch and is very sensitive to patient reactions while he works. It also helps that my daughter gets to wear cool sunglasses and watch movies during the procedure. During our last visit, she said she was afraid of the 360° x-ray machine so they gave her time to look at it and explained how it worked. There seems to be endless patience for her. I appreciate the extra time it takes to convince a child to go through with something unfamiliar. With other medical providers, I tend to feel that there is a rush to get to the next patient, but never here. Going to the dentist is often something that people dread, but not for my daughter and me, thanks to Dr. Hsu and his wonderful staff. I highly recommend going to him for dental care. read more

Perfectly nice but seriously wasted of my time; 1.5 hr. new patient appointment to talk and have a quick peek at my teeth. He wanted me to come back for another visit to have my teeth cleaned. He took 20 x-rays, that he didn't bother to look at. He told me I had 3 cavities. Because he didn't aspire any confidence in me, I had 2 other dentists look at my teeth, following my appointment with Dr. Hsu. They both found one little hole that could be filled in order to prevent a painful filling later down the road. I asked their office to send over the x-rays to a new dentist and they compiled 20 x-rays into a one page file. Needless to say, not worth the money that my insurance had to pay for those 20 x-rays. read more

Wowwwwww! I'll start this with that. I was truly blown away by the care that Dr. Hsu and his staff provide. First: It all starts with Jennifer in the front desk. She is very friendly, takes her time in explaining any paper work that is giving to you. I also liked how honest she was/is. Second: you can tell alot of any business from the up keep up the restroom. And this place does not let you down very clean, overall the office is very clean and soothing. Third: Dr. Hsu is by far THE BEST DENTIST IVE HAD his very informative gives you thorough details of the procedures he will be doing to you. Breaks down all your options that are available. Its nice knowing a dentist that doesn't see you as a walking money sign. He actually cares, its also nice to see he has the latest technology in the dentist world. Oh and he has such a gentle hand, not like many DDS in the area that just put a beating to your mouth. Oh yeah! He'll even pop in a movie of your likening to watch while he does his magic. Dr. Hsu and staff are the best! Dr. Hsu is all the things a terrific dentist should be: he's gentle; he explains everything that he's doing; he has great "bedside" (or in this case "chair side") manner; he shows concern for your pain and will manage effectively; ....and he's kind! His receptionist, Jennifer, is very friendly, helpful, and accommodating. His office is brand-spanking new and is extremely clean. Coffee, hot chocolate, chai tea, bottle water, and apple juice are all complimentary in the lobby. My 11 yr-old son loves the ability to watch TV with headphones throughout the procedure (Amazon movies are on tap!) and loves to pick through the large variety of toys at the end of the visit. There's a nice comfortable spot in the treatment room where parents can sit and be near their child. it would be difficult to find a dentist, staff, and office space of this caliber. My family and I have been coming to Dr.Hsu for a number of years now. I've had 3 root canals, 1 bridge/extraction, 2 caps/ crowns, and had a chipped molar repaired. Needless to say I've had extensive work done in his office and have always had the best experience possible. I've always tried to avoid the dentist due to bad experiences but after my first visit I was comfortable and decided to have everything done in his office. I'm not a fan of needles especially in my mouth but all I have ever felt was a small pinch. He takes pride in his craft and is a true professional. He always has let me know my options as far as the pros and cons, and always helps me make the best long term choices for my teeth. I was referred to Dr, Hsu by a friend in 2008 and I am incredibly grateful that we met. I had not been to the dentist for more than several years, needless to say, I required heavy work! I have been a patient of Dr. Hsu's since 2003. When I moved to San Carlos I originally was looking for a local dentist--there are SO MANY in San Carlos (almost as many as hair salons!). I tried a couple but didn't get the type of personal attention that I had been accustomed to with my previous dentist in Burlingame (Ross Williams). After finding Dr. Hsu I could relax again, knowing that I had found a caring, gentle, extremely professional dentist. The office is spotless, the staff is friendly and Dr. Hsu always takes the time to explain procedures and options--he really works with you. I also appreciate that he is a San Carlos resident--he and his wife are raising their young family in our own community. WOW --- so many great reviews for a great dentist, what can I add? A little about me: I have a major sweet tooth. Genetically, I have rather bad teeth...and I'm DEATHLY afraid of dentists. Seriously. I didn't see a dentist for over 20 years; that worked for a while, no big issues...then one day, CRACK, a molar just cracks and breaks, leaving me in pain...as well as a nasty sharp ridge that my tongue could NOT resist poking around on, leaving me in MORE pain. NOT COOL! Dr. Hsu was recommended by a close friend, who knows my "issues" with dentists...despite breaking into a HUGE sweat upon entering his office and practically fainting before I got into the chair, it was all good. ALL GOOD! Yeah, I had lots more issues than just that cracked tooth, but he explained it all to me and we put together a plan to fix me all up. He REALLY listens, and cares. If I even flinch he'll stop everything and make sure I'm ok...I've had several root canals now and while I admit they aren't fun, I can actually RELAX now, I don't have anxiety or any major problems. In general he's just a nice guy, talks about You and Life outside your teeth, he remembers things I've told him, he's just "present" ....I've never felt like he's rushed or on to the next patient, either. His staff is great, too. Professional and personable, and I'll add they've fit me in for last second appointments too.... I no longer live in San Mateo county, but until I find a comparable dentist in Sonoma, I'll continue seeing Dr. Hsu....he's just THAT good. It's very easy to get an appointment, as long as you leave a message on the answering machine (the receptionist doesn't always pick up). On the day of the appointment, I never have to wait long to see the doctor or the dental hygienist. The practice is very clean, has state of the art technology, and has very friendly staff.
