    Smelling oils together
    Lisa R.

I had a wonderful time making my own fragrance and candle today with Melinda C.! I heard about this place and wanted to try it out, so I asked if she would meet me there. It is near the JC Penney/AMC side of the mall in case you want to park close! When entering, the couple who owns the place greets you and lets you sniff all of the scents along the left wall. We got clipboards to fill out our top fragrances (they recommended 3-4 per candle but you can get more to try to sniff what combinations may work best for your nose). There are jars of coffee beans throughout to help reset your sense of smell. I had taken a peek online for the list of scents, and my top choice, almond was not on the shelf. I asked about it, and they pulled it from the back, yay! There is a shelf of various candleholders to choose from. I picked a clear jar with a lid and copper handle, and Melinda C. chose a green owl. I ended up with four: almond, coconut, fresh baked bread, and vanilla bean. They brought us out oils at our table which had a tray, spoon, and measuring cup/jigger. They suggested we sniff combinations of two and then three, swirling under our noses, to find the best mixture. Then, we were told to mix the oils in the measuring cup to a specific line, so we added and did our mad science, sniffing regularly, until we had our perfect combinations. Then, we were brought out our holder with hot wax to add our fragrance oils into, and then we mixed with the spoon for about two minutes around the wicks until distributed throughout. Because Melinda C. had a colorful owl, she would not be making a label. However, my jar was clear so I could make a label for mine. A cup of colored pencils was on the table. I decided to borrow her French expertise and get help writing "joie d'amande" which is almond joy in French. I drew an almond on the label also. We walked around the mall for about two hours while our candles set, and then picked them up to take home, complete with a candle care instruction card. This is a really fun activity to do with friends, and every season there are special scents to try!

This is the candle I made today with 3 scents. I could have chosen to add color.
