We had to see some friends locally on a sunday afternoon and fancied a walk beforehand and some lunch and the Fox Inn seemed perfect, located in the very quiet village of Souldern which has some great circular walks to Aynho and back.
I emailed the pub via their web site and got a very prompt and polite reply that evening and booked a table for when they opened at noon the next day.
On arrival we parked in the car park at the rear which was small but there were plenty of spaces on the quiet road outside - Souldern appears to be on a road which is a dead end so there is very little traffic.
The barmaid was very friendly and took our order promptly, unlike a lot of pubs we had the option of a tab even though we chose to sit outside. I had a Hooky Bitter which was well kept, they also have 2 guest ales, one of which was called Quadrophenia.
We both fancied a bolstering Ham, Egg & Chips at £9.95 each and this came promptly with a tasty salad garnish, I know chips aren't the finest dish but when done as well as they were here they are worth the calorific overload as were the 2 eggs and generous ham portion.
We were originally planning to just have a main and do the walk but the garden was quite pleasant with numerous seemingly local people also enjoying the 20+ degrees so I decided to indulge in the Chocolate Brownie. It was a pity they'd run out of ice cream but the cream was OK. I chose a cafetiere of coffee which yielded 2 good cups and cost just £1.60 - superb value.
In the end we started the walk at 1.20 suitably fed and watered.
To summarise, a great unpretentious pub with a strong local following, simple but well prepared food and very easily accessed from the M40 and A43. read more
