Union Rack and Roll - Bowling at night!

I really like the ambiance at night, when they turn on the neon lights and turn off the regular day lights. Prices aren't that bad at all too, compared to when I went bowling in California in my hometown. The workers there are nice, mostly college students. I didn't try any of the food there so I can't speak for that but overall a great place to have fun!

The Memorial Union's "Rack and Roll" is a play on the phrase 'rock & roll' (which they have playing through speakers), as well as describing exactly what you can do there: shoot billiards ('rack' the pool balls) and go bowling ('roll' the.....well, duh). So the name is (perhaps unintentionally) clever, big deal. But is it still worthy of a 5-star rating? Absolutely. Their pool tables are either in good or great condition, depending on which one you choose, but the lighting is perfectly appropriate for the nature of the sport. The arcade games are excellent as well--they have 2 pinballs, 'Family Guy' and 'Iron Man' (both newer Stern tables in fine shape), in addition to a Guitar Hero Arcade version, high-definition Terminator shoot-em-up, and several others. The bowling area is just as well-maintained, as I've never experienced an issue with balls getting stuck in the gutter, needing a pin reset, etc. The animations that are displayed after a throw (e.g. spare, strike, 7-10 split) are cute, sometimes funny even, and I'm fairly certain that they're student-made on behalf of the college of computery-people. I recall the price to bowl being very reasonable, and often times students can do so for free during special events. I loved coming here as a student to roll (just NOT on Shomer Shabbos), and I'm looking forward to many happy returns as an Alumni. The Union's Rack and Roll is a terrific place to relax in between classes or decompress after a 2-hour differential equations final. "Well, that's like, your opinion, man."

The exterior of the building has seen better days, and in broad day light, it looks rather run down. There is some weird parking in the front of the building but only enough for half a dozen cars. Back out straight into the street at your peril. Inside, the interior is circa 1990's, clean and cheerful. The bowling shoes are standard, but the balls have seen much better days long ago. The have chips and gouges all over. The games are computerized so it's one less thing to undermine your fun. There is table seating of four a step above for those waiting their turns and a stool in front of the computer below. The computer even gives you visual suggestions on where to throw and curve the ball for maximum results. If only my hand/eye coordination could follow directions. The ball retriever takes a bit of time, and the pin picker-upper gets stuck sometimes and doesn't knock down the pins. I call that an extra, free turn. You can push a button to force the machine to collect the pins. I forget the price of renting the shoes and per game, but I don't remember them being out of the ordinary. We met some lovely retired people bowling next to us, and in the other half of the building were tons of children. It seems the people assigning lanes takes into consideration where you should be placed based on how childless you are. I really appreciate the consideration because bowling is challenging enough for me without the distraction of screaming kids.

If you press, they offer to "repair" the damage. The first time they damaged my brand new ball, they told me to leave it for repair. Rather than fill the hole/scratch and then buff the ball, they sanded the WHOLE BALL to the depth of the damage, removing most of the branding on the ball. When telling them they destroyed my NEW ball, they simply said that was all they could do. I didn't come back for years due to this appalling abuse and lack of accountability. I finally came back about 4-5 years later ONLY because they started doing $5 cosmic on Mondays. The second week, I got the massive gouges seen in the provided pictures, both in a single game. They're both 1 to 1 1/4" long, about 3/8" wide, and about 1/4" deep. **NOT LEGAL ADVICE** Notice for those who are unaware: THE ALLEY IS RESPONSIBLE FOR MAJOR DAMAGES; i.e. anything that significantly reduces the longevity of your equipment. After consulting with several people, including those who work in law and long terms employees from a dozen other bowling alleys, the consensus is that the bowling alley IS liable for all damages to your property IF it is above and beyond "normal" damage such as belt marks, minor dings and scratches, etc that the owner is expected to deal with, assuming such care will maintain the ball through hundreds of games (5-10 years when properly maintained). Major damage that can affect the balls performance and can be costly for the owner to repair is the liability of the bowling alley. They are to the fill hole holes and return the ball to its previous state to the customers satisfaction or replace it with with an equivalent ball. "Buffing out (deep) scratches", removing mm's of cover stock isn't acceptable. Demand they fill and do it properly or get it fixed at a reputable repair shop and send them an invoice. On the bright side, $5 unlimited bowling on Monday, cosmic every night, and long as you don't use a ball you care about.

The mozzarella sticks were surprisingly tasty! Was not expecting any sort of quality foods here! We had over thirty people and it worked fantastic, however one of our lanes continually had issues with the contraption locking up and wasting our time. We had to have the good staff guy go back and remove the ball at least four times. Also notice the speed clocks on our four lanes were not working which is sad because it is always a fun challenge to see how fast my throws are. Overall a great location and a fun time! For churches you definitely want to ask about a discount or any large group, just walking in here on a weekend is most likely going to get you a long wait.
