There's a tee box for every skill level at these two courses. Overall the best golf in the county, with high prices to reflect that fact. Four stars for course condition and redesign. Online system makes it easy to schedule tee times. Ackerman-Allen course added length and carved some new holes out of the west end of McCormick Woods. Some forgiving fairways but accuracy is required around the greens. Bump-and-run players, you'll need an accurate wedge for the elevated greens. Kampen course is a flashy deep-rough waste bunker Pete Dye design with challenging sight lines that force shot placement. Spray the driver at your peril! read more

We played the course a month ago and honestly were not terribly impressed with the quality of the greens or fairways. It's laid out in a challenging enough setup but staff is pretentious other than the gentleman at the driving range/ club fitting house. read more

Although the kampen golf course is very beautiful, the views are nowhere near worth the price considering the amount of harassment and rudeness one is guaranteed to receive from the entire staff. I was distraught by the lack of professionalism and consideration from the moment we were "welcomed" to nearly being interrupted on every hole. My group was either going too fast or too slow or not knowing where to go, due to the misguidance from another staff member, to ending on being accused to stealing a lousy club cover. They do service beer (thank god) but don't count on the beer cart making it to you for refills until the 17th hole. I don't golf very often but have gone to lesser golf course, for fraction of the price and been treated like royalty compared to "Danny's trained staff members". I understand that this is an national NCAA golf course with many professional golfers visiting, but that is more the reason why I had such higher expectations for a large group of Alumni visiting on their 10 year anniversary would get treated. If you want admire highly researched grass from Purdue's own Turfgrass Science Department while being treated like a child then this is the course for you. But if you are a returning alumni looking to reminisce of the good old times over 18 holes then it's best that you go to literally any other golf course within the cornfields of Indiana. read more

The Kampen Course which hosted the 2008 Men's NCAA Championship is a great Pete Dye layout. It's in pristine shape. It plays long if you are feeling bold: 7400+ from the tips. And it plays every bit of that length and a touch more when this somewhat linksy course gets a little breeze running across it--some "serious teeth" as the folks say. A great price: around $60 for 18 holes with cart depending upon which day you play. Bottom line: It's a hidden gem. And just one of the 18's that make up the 36 hole Purdue Univ. Golf complex. Didn't play the other one. But I guess I should. Sorry Indiana Univ. Hoosiers, Purdue has the better course. Not even close. read more

The Kampen course is a very strong 4, possibly a 5. It is difficult beyond belief, but one of the most interesting layouts around! Have to love the water-logged par 3 2nd and 13th holes, in particular, and the par 14th, which (along with 13) skirts the Celery Bog is one of the most beautiful and exciting in the state. Ackerman Hills was a disappointment, however, and brings the facility down to a solid 4 Stars. If I played 100 rounds at this facility, I'd probably choose to play 90 or so on Kampen, and only visit Ackerman when I was desperate for a change. read more

Review is for Ackerman only: For the price -- $30 for students to ride 18 on the weekends, $20 during the week -- you cannot beat this course. It is well maintained, and the pace of play is usually right at 4 hours. There are some wonderful holes, like the signature par 3 at 13, and the green at 9 will surely challenge you. Prices for beer/food aren't too bad either; carts are nice; and 90% of the time the service is very friendly as well. read more

I've recently decided to start taking up golf, so I have been working on developing my swing at various driving ranges. The range at Purdue is really nice quality, but is a little pricey. A medium bucket of balls costs $10 (the same size at the Lafayette public course on 9th street is $5). They also give you a handful of tees, which is nice. The range is not just a flat piece of land, it has hills and alot of different targets to aim at. It's a good place to come hit some balls during your lunch break. The courses look to be in pristine condition. Haven't been on them yet but they look amazing. read more

I had an very bad experience at Ackerman Hills at the Purdue Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex. There was an issue where people behind us were actually shooting golf balls over my groups head on multiple occasions. When we confronted the staff at the complex, we were told "it is our fault because we should have been playing faster or let them through." When I informed them that we did offer to let the people play through, they refused. At the end of it, we got blamed for this and were made to look like fools when all we wanted to do was learn to play. Staff gets a 0/10 and I will be making sure to tell everyone about my bad experience there. There are many other great courses in Indiana, I would recommend staying away from this one. It is clear they are attached to a college because the staff all acts like college children. read more

This golf complex is great. During the winter you can tee off on the driving range from inside the heated bays. They also offer a nice, indoor putting green to help you up your short game. The prices are very reasonable for the course. I have paid a lot more to golf on courses that were much worse. Between the two, Kampen is the course of choice. Although, it is more money. If you can afford it, give it a shot. You will enjoy it much more than the South course (Ackerman). Hole 12 on Kampen is wicked. It's easily the most difficult hole I have played. It's great fun. The rest of Kampen is nice and varies in difficulty. A great design by Pete Dye. Ackerman isn't bad, it's just not as nice as Kampen. It's also much cheaper. The layout isn't bad and it's much easier to get a good lie on these holes than the Kampen ones. If you're not a seasoned pro, you will be content playing Ackerman. It's still fun and significantly better than some courses I've played on. The all-around pricing for this place isn't bad. Range fees are on par with other ranges, and the rounds of golf are decently priced too. If you're an alumnus and are back in town, don't fret; you can rent clubs here too. I forget exactly how much I paid to rent clubs but they gave me a nice Nike set. Unfortunately they were significantly better than my set and I have had the itch to upgrade ever since. I would highly recommend giving this place a shot if you are in town visiting or even if you are a Purdue student looking to have some fun. P.S. If you are a student at Purdue, try to get into the golf class. This was one of the best classes I had while I was there. Unlimited range usage and free golf. You can't beat that. read more

Kampen is one of my favorite courses I've ever played, and I've played a lot. If you are reading this to decide to play it or not, let me tell you right now: PLAY IT! Links style that is very fair. One of the best mixes of different types of holes you will find. A great facility throughout (with really nice practice areas). When I'm visiting a friend in Indy from my hometown of Chicago, Kampen is on our must list to play. The twilight rate is really reasonable and you can get in a full 18. The last 7 holes are as good of a variety as you'll find anywhere. For this place not to make Gold Digest's Top 10 in Indiana is an absolute crime! read more
