Prior to storage, we elected full coverage insurance and were assured that the company had extensive experience handling and storing antique and high-value furniture for our sizable amount of belongings in a 6k square foot home. Upon delivery, we discovered that the majority of our items were severely broken or damaged, and nearly all were affected by what appeared to be mold or mildew. Moisture readings on our antique furniture measured approximately 60%, and in some cases, moving blankets had adhered to the surfaces. All of this damage was witnessed and assessed by not only their moving team but a manager they sent out to our home the following day who was in complete shock at the staggering amount of damage. After Sandhills filed our insurance claim, for our elected full insurance, we learned from the insurance carrier that the required paperwork was not fulfilled by Sandhills despite being required under their own policy. This administrative oversight voided our full coverage protection and reduced our compensation to $2.50 per pound, which is far below the replacement value of the affected items. When we initially raised this issue, a manager, Pat, assured us it would be corrected, but subsequent calls were not returned, and our attempts to follow up have been unsuccessful. Pat refuses to speak to us and the secretary hung up on us. All of these conversations have been recorded and we have proof of all statements made by the insurance, Sandhills, their movers, managers, and any/all parties involved because NC is a one party consent to record. My husband and I are both 100% disabled Army veterans with four children, one of whom has a severe disability and Sandhills was abundantly aware of this. Following the delivery, our family has experienced health issues consistent with mold exposure. A licensed mold specialist advised us to seal off all affected items to prevent contamination of our newly renovated home, leaving a significant amount of our belongings to include all major furniture such as living room furniture, bedroom sets, mattresses, and dining room furniture unusable. This situation has caused substantial financial, logistical, emotional, and health challenges for our family. While we understand that mistakes can occur, we are shocked that there has been no meaningful resolution or constructive communication to address the matter and ZERO accountability. I tried to contact the owner Jason Birdsall via phone, email, and his Facebook with no response. We hope that by sharing our experience, others will have the information needed to make an informed decision to look elsewhere during a move or storage need. We are now being forced to pay for a lawyer to seek legal representation in this matter. No family should ever have to suffer like this.

However, they were horribly inefficient. It took a four man crew twice as long to move us out of the apartment as it had taken a 2 man crew to move us into the apartment with the same amount of stuff. Also, we had some bags with personal items in a corner that we said we would move ourselves. They insisted multiple times they needed the bags to use as filler in the truck, and when we finally said ok it took extra time for them to use an unnecessary amount of tape on the bags. Furthermore, we had a couch in the bedroom and this crew could not figure out how to move my couch without taking the bedroom door off its hinges- the whole process took an hour, which was problematic as we were paying $225 an hour. That couch has been through six moves with me- 2 of those times I personally moved with the help of an older uncle and it has never taken an hour to move because it's not a terribly heavy couch. In addition to the inefficiencies, we still have bookshelves, a glass insert, and a remote control that they packed up missing. Lastly, I had several boxes marked fragile in big, bold letters and the crew stacked heavy boxes on top of my fragile items.

During the move, multiple crew members disappeared for periods exceeding one hour without explanation. One mover took particular notice of my wife's jewelry, watching closely as she handled it that morning. Her jewelry -- including pieces of deep family significance passed down through generations -- was secured in our locked vehicle with no signs of forced entry and driven directly to our new home. At the destination, the same mover who had observed the jewelry that morning offered multiple times to carry the specific bag containing it into the house. My wife placed the bag in our bedroom closet. At some point during the remainder of the move, we were outside the home. The following morning the jewelry was gone. When we reported this to CEO William Saunders, he stated -- verbatim -- "we have never had anything like this happen and this could ruin us." He requested we not contact police for 24 hours, stating he wanted to speak with his crew first, and indicated he had a good idea who may have been responsible based on issues that person had "when he was young." We honored his request. The items were not returned. My wife spoke with Mr. Saunders separately and independently, and his statements to her were consistent with what he told me. Mr. Saunders later disputed making those earlier statements. A police report has been filed. The investigation is active.
