I didn't initially start my children at St. Vincent de Paul School and was very reluctant to so…read morewhen I did. The reasons being that I was aware of the amount of busy work and numerous projects that students were given throughout the years at this school. I know this because a family member of mine sent children here and I would on occasion help them with homework. Initially, my children's experience was wonderful. I am sad to say that experience didn't last long. Therefore, after several months their experience at this school ended. While my children were there I often volunteered and came to eat lunch with them. I noticed a lot during these visits. I am very conservative and like to decide what I feel is important for my children and how our money should be spent. I firmly believe that a teacher can make or break a younger student's school experience. I also feel if one is going to pay for a religious education that all staff should exemplify Christian teachings and behavior. I don't feel that this was being demonstrated by all staff at this school. I have included pros and cons of the things I noticed and experienced while my children attended St. Vincent's. Hopefully, they will help you in your decision making efforts. I also encourage you to write a review on whatever school you choose to help others decide also. Deciding on a school is big decision and it is hard for one to know what a school is like until your child has attended it. Pros Administration often helps with serving hot lunch. Cafeteria staff makes holidays extra special for students and John is wonderful. Students can get seconds on lunch items without an additional charge. Students in younger grades get a lunch recess and typically an additional one if the teacher is willing to do so. Not all are willing to do so during the winter months. Some the teachers are wonderful and exemplify Christian teachings and behaviors throughout the day. Playground staff is nice to students. Some of the teachers spend their lunch hour eating with students. Students get out early leaving a good portion of the day remaining for those that have a stay at home parent. Uniforms can be purchased at several online and local retailers for reasonable prices. The school doesn't require the school name or logo to be on the clothing, which is a savings. Students in grades 1-8 have their own lockers. The school keeps extra clothing available for emergency situations. However, I recommend having your child keep an extra set of clothing in his/her locker or school bag. The school doesn't keep every size available. Milk price for snack is very reasonable. In 2014 it was fifteen cents. Many staff know students by name. Cons I caught administration lying to my children and then administration tried to tell me that my children were the ones lying. The sad thing is that administration said " I would do it again". This is when things got difficult because administration didn't like that I caught them lying. This is not the type of leadership I want in the school my children attend. Administration could do a much better job in handling issues. Administration could do much better in following through with what they say. Administration doesn't know what the class activity fee is used for and doesn't review teachers supply lists. Administration admitted to me when I pointed some things out on the supply list that some of the quantities seemed excessive. School supplies are overstated; water colors used only once. The mile run is ran on asphalt for the majority of the grades rather than a dirt track - safety issue. School could do a better job with children that have special learning/medical needs. Communication needs improving; parents aren't always informed when they can attend school functions and when students can be dismissed early afterward. Home and School Association and Advisory Board don't publish meeting minutes monthly. Parents are expected to view and print most items from online. Exit interviews aren't conducted by pastor when children are withdrawn from school. Indoor recess sometimes consists of having children remain at desk and be silent. Recycling isn't taught or demonstrated by all teachers. When students are trying to be courteous to other teachers when passing in hallways they are told to get moving. The school has numerous fees and fundraisers. Not all teachers demonstrate Christian teachings or behaviors. Not all teachers are compassionate and some make students cry. Teachers and children aren't any more respectful or polite than at public schools. St. Vincent's doesn't draw from all that affluent of an area and not enough emphasis is placed on watching its customers pocket books. Principle doesn't believe in consistency or mandating policies for staff such as amount of homework. However, there is no problem in doing so for parents. Parent drop off and pick up can be time consuming. There isn't a nurse on duty for the entire day.

The U.S. may have had a revolution on its hands were it not for Children's Village Montessori…read more As a new mom I felt absolutely wronged by the laws of this nation that do not allow for extended paid maternity leaves. So when I had to look for a place that I could trust with my firstborn when he was 10 weeks old, I was pretty particular, to say the least. I also needed a place that was convenient to my commute and was reasonably priced. It's been 10 months now and I am so happy I found this place. First of all, Pat, who works in the infant room, is an absolute baby-whisperer (or a Godsend, depending on your religious affiliations). It is such a joy to leave your child with someone who makes him flash that adorable toothless grin. She takes excellent care of the babies; my child is always is well-rested, well-fed, clean and - most importantly !happy! at the end of the day. The toddler room also seems to be a happy place. All the ladies have been almost like co-parents to us. They are baby experts! and will give you helpful tidbits about your particular child. I don't expect the moon - it is a daycare center, and it is tucked in a place that has crazy construction going on right now. Also it's not like they offer a fully organic menu or baby reiki or anything, but at least they are willing to work with you. They've also been flexible with our unpredictable work schedules, which is huge.

I can't believe I'm the first to review CVM!…read more I switched my now 5-year-old son to this preschool/daycare when he was three years old, after a disastrous experience with another child care. I was frantic and desperate for childcare, and when I walked in and saw Mary (the owner) wearing a cheery green leprechaun hat for St. Patrick's Day and calling each child by name, I knew I was in a good place. I only have a few (minor) complaints about this place, and I'd send another child here in a heartbeat. My son is starting kindergarten soon, so I'm sad to say we'll be leaving CVM soon after nearly 2 years. I'll get the cons out of the way quickly: (1) Parking is a little rough, since CVM is smack dab in the middle of a swath of auto-body places, and it's in an urban neighborhood right next to the University of Minnesota. Often there are no parking spots and parents have to idle their cars in the middle of the lot. (2) The staff could probably use a dress code. Their clothing is sometimes a little off-putting... there's something to be said for looking neat and tidy and well-groomed, and CVM staff occasionally are lax in this department. The pros: (1) CVM accepts childcare assistance. You'd be astonished how many places don't. This was a major factor for me. (2) The location is very convenient -- RIGHT next to the University of Minnesota, which is great for people like me who are students, staff or faculty at UMN but couldn't get in off the waiting list at the university daycare. (3) The mix of kids is healthy. The kids almost uniformly come from good homes, and many are the children of grad students and university employees. The racial balance is well-distributed and diverse, not skewed in any one direction, and my son has playmates whose parents hail from countries as diverse as Ethiopia, Somalia, Laos and Norway. Having playmates whose parents are involved, serious about parenting and affectionate is so important. Parents often bring treats for all the kids. (4) Mary, the owner, has been at CVM for almost 30 years -- longer than I've been alive. That continuity is so good for the children. There is less turnover at CVM than other childcares I've used. (5) I have never felt anything less than completely secure leaving my son in the care of CVM. Even when they bring the kids to the park (a few blocks away) or walk them to the playground, I know they're keeping a good eye on him and taking good care of him. You can't put a price on that.

It seems weird to me to do a review about a church. But there is a method to my madness and it…read morewill become clear as you read on. I'm not a very regular church-goer. Even when my wife and I decided that our young daughter should go to bible school, we have a hard time getting up *every* Sunday for her. As part of her church experience, she wanted to join the children's choir. Last Sunday, she was supposed to sing during the service. We make a point to go to those services--for her. But this service was exceptional. Not because my daughter sang in it, but because they had what they called "Worship Through Music." The entire service was a string of musical performances. From flute ensembles, to a small orchestra, to a bell choir, to a four piece modern band. It was an hour of beautiful music, put together very well, and transitioned flawlessly. I was amazed at the wealth of musical talent at the church. They even had some teenagers do a little drama skit which was quite well done. As far as their regular service goes, I haven't been to a lot of different churches so I have no basis for comparison. All I know is that I tend to tune out and think about work, or my weekend home improvement projects most Sundays (yes, I'm going to hell). Neither popped into my head during this service. In talking to one of the members, they apparently have a service like this twice a year: once in Spring, and once around Christmas time. Even if you don't like church, but just enjoy music, it's nice to go, close your eyes, and just listen. You can get beyond the religious theme. I did.

I love this church. My wife and I have been going since about 2001 and my kids have grown up…read morethere. It is a very nice mix of a modern building and service with a some traditional Lutheran mixed in. The sermons are uplifting and people are welcoming. If you're interested in a preschool, there is also a great one one site. There is a traditional service each Sunday early morning and a blended one later in the morning with some organ, piano, or modern music mixed. There are occasional bluegrass or other special music services. Its a great place to meet people over donuts on Sunday or by getting involved in small group or service group. But, if you just want to attend church once in a while, its great for that too.
