I was doing some mountaineering near Denali National Park…read more The high was -11F. Coming down, I down-climbed onto a snow-dusted scree slope and lost my footing. I grabbed a hold and a large rock came loose, hitting me in the neck. I blacked out, lost my grip, and fell. My crampon snagged and I landed on my right hand and face. My crampon had come clear off my boot. My ring finger felt REALLY cold so I took my glove off to warm it. It was bleeding. By this point my climbing partner had caught up to me and was applying a band aid to my finger and sticking my hand into a warm mitt. On the drive home my fingers all started to warm up and I regained feeling. Except the ring finger on my right hand. We stopped for tacos in Wasilla (review coming up) and I decided to remove the band aid. I did not like what I saw. My finger was purpleish/grey and extremely swollen. Yet it was numb and did not hurt. I started frantically doing the paranoid "Web MD" thing and trying to diagnose myself. Was I going to lose my finger? Was this really happening? My climbing partner recommended I come here and get checked out. This is the first place I've gone for care where they didn't question the validity of my insurance. I promptly saw a doctor, he looked at it and explained how he knew it was *not* frostbite (whew). Then he said it was probably broken and we should do an X-Ray. We did an X-Ray. I crushed it. (my finger tip, not the mountain top) Doc splinted me up, gave me some care tips, and sent me on my way. All in less than an hour, at 8pm, on a Sunday night. Amazing. I've never been so impressed by medical care; I'll definitely come back if the mountains beat me up again. (bonus: they have climbing pictures everywhere and even outdoor magazines to read while you wait!)

You would think they would mentioned that I needed a covid test prior to coming in. I mentioned that they should please consider what it takes to take time off to see a doctor (and I live remotely, so an hour to drive) but was dismissed and said to comeback when I had my covid test completed. Needless to say I will not be making a another appointment here ever.

Unless you are the earlier patient with a serious problem that he took the time to help. They didn't over book, they took more time than allotted when it was necessary. A doctor that can stay on schedule is what we have now: "what's your problem? Okay, here's a prescription. Next patient" And Dr Mike made it clear that he could not accept Medicare patients because Medicare doesn't pay for anything they consider unnecessary, which is anything beyond taking your vital signs. Those of us approaching Medicare age knew that and planned to pay out of pocket. He was worth it.

Behind each patient there is a story that represents the reason for a surgical intervention. My…read morestory started about 30 years ago, when I noticed small bony deformities on both my feet. As years went by, the deformities got bigger to the point that it was difficult to find comfortable shoes. These deformities caused pain that became more severe over the years; the pain made my walking very difficult and kept me awake during the night. I was diagnosed with bilateral bunions and surgery was the only option. In my country bunion surgery doesn't have a high rate of success, so I gave up the hope that I will ever have normal feet, wear normal shoes and be free of pain. My sister brought my case to Dr. Heilala's attention. When he heard my story, he was so kind that he offered to come to my country and operate on my feet. After he saw my X-Rays and the lack of modern surgical instruments and equipment he told my sister that it will be dangerous to do the surgery without proper instruments but offered to see me in Anchorage.
