There's a giant Civil War-era granite fort in the middle of Casco Bay. You can see it from just about everywhere you are in the city... from the top of the Observatory to the end of the breakwater at Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse, from your walk along Mackworth Island to your ferry ride to Peaks Island, there she stands. She's beautiful and, yes, usually accessible too - if you haven't gone out of your way to explore her yet, you're missing out on something really, very special.
I've had the awesome opportunity to visit Fort Gorges multiple times now and I am never not entirely enamored. While it may seem small from afar, it's a bit of a monolith once you approach it and are inside. From the dark, old artillery rooms to the amazing acoustics, there's nothing quite like this spot (it's not weird to admit that when I stand in the center of the hexagon-shaped structure I feel protected from the crazy world outside those walls, is it?)!
Admittedly, the fort has become overgrown with vegetation (the entire top of it is covered with trees and other flora whose roots are deteriorating the general masonry work). There's a preservation plan and safety upgrades in effect and the non-profit, Friends of Fort Gorges, is doing an amazing job at education and advocacy for the unique space. That being said, when visiting use extreme caution.
After you're done swimming off the beach to the left of the entrance (the water is abundantly clear and warmer than other beaches nearby here; it's magic!), don't forget to find your way to the top of the fort for the best views of Portland's skyline and harbor there is. Taking it in from this particular vantage reminds you of the incredible history our little city of Resurgam has seen! read more
