erosion and overgrowth

Its sad to see that this place is a unesco heritage site but Ive seen truck stops better maintained. Not safe to hike around, still standing water lots of mosquitoes. Brown recluses everywhere. No appropriate signage, broken benches. Felled trees ontop of the mounds, tree roots destroying and eroding the banks of these mounds. And clear signs of flood drainage eroding the sacred structures. This is beyond disappointing and should be removed from the oversight of whoever is in charge, they clearly do not understand basic archaeology practices, and do not care to educate visitors with signs about the mounds, nor is a docent available to give guided tours. How will future generations know what to protect and why if you dont teach them?

We drove here for paved place yo walk with some nature scenery. We parked when i assume the canoe parking. We didnt bring our bikes this time but the majority of the people on the trail were biking. We saw some birds and a few deer. Alot of it was shady which was appreciated. We walked 4-5 miles. Nice time. Wore bug spray and had sun visor was comfortable. Need to do more activities... getvin better shape. Would come back.

THE MUSEUM We took our 5 and 11 year old here prior to hiking the Fort Ancient Trails. The artifacts and signage taught the kids (and adults) about the culture of the Native Americans and the history of their demise. We spent about an hour walking around. Could have spent more time if the kids had longer attention spans. Really enjoyed this! THE GROUNDS Without first visiting the museum and understanding the history of the Native Americans, the trails and mounds wouldn't have been very impactful. Lots of easy to moderate hiking, if you're interested. WHAT YOU NEED Sturdy shoes for walking the trails. Nice outhouses are on the property. Bring sandwiches or snacks, there's an area witch picnic tables. Bug spray.
