It was the centrum of Ancient Roma civilization. The pinnacle of prestige in the known world!
The Roman forum, aka the Roma Foro, is the center of Ancient Rome's cultural and political arms. It was this center that promulgated some of Ancient Rome's most fierce government that was headed by emperors, whom were nasty as their predecessors. The Roma Foro is basically ruins from the great civilization that was preserved and protected throughout the centuries, more so now through these recent decades, due to the immense popularity of tourism and attention at this site. I was here on a sightseeing bus tour, which happened to stop at the Colosseo, but since I noticed the Roma Foro and Palatine Hill, I took an interest and paid the admission fee. Thankful that the 12 euros that I had paid was good for the Roma Foro, Palatine Hill, and the Colosseo all for 12 euros! I paid cash for this transaction, although I do believe that they take credit cards. Not too sure of that. The Roma forum was a very unique experience indeed and quite wonderful in a historical way.
I would definitely recommend the Roma forum, in conjunction with the Colosseo and Palatine Hill. It's basically a half day affair, but can be a full day, if you let your mind wander in this place. There are many historical significances here and many shrines to the different Roma gods and emperors. It had an eerie presence and atmosphere, even with the many tourists abound, you can get that vibe of a world gone and vanished in the sands of time - leaving just buildings and priceless artifacts behind. The entrance to the Roma Foro is located pretty much next to the Colosseo, maybe 100 feet from the entrance. Parking can be found, but due to traffic and just a sheer number of tourists here, it can be hard to find, but not impossible. Best best be would be to check the latest tourist information available. You would be a fool not to come here, as it is the top 10 sights to see while in Rome. As an avid lover of history, it was amazing to have been here and grace Ancient Roma as it was back before Christ.
For me, it was an experience not like any other. Discovering the roots of ancient Roma through the history book wasn't enough, but to come here was especially gratifying and satisfying. The landscape was dotted by many buildings and ruins, a lot of them were white and just littered the space where they lay. Many photographs to be had here. It was the back of the valley that seemed particularly interesting, where, the buildings to be seen seemed to be more apartment type of buildings that were preserved. In actuality, they were structures dedicated to a particular emperor. Some might see the Foro nothing more than just a cemetery, but for the rest of us, it was a flashback into the past and maybe a glimpse into the future?
There were a lot of signage in English, French, and Italian about the structures in the Foro, which explains the backstory of why they were built and what they were used for. The architecture of many of these structures were stunning and quite beautiful. Photos online and in print media can only do so much, but to be able to see it live and in your face is another story all together. Yet, the ancient Romans had its place here at the Foro and the power that once dwelled here is gone. Still crazy to think about it though. If you have wanted to come here, you should.
It's a definite must do on your travels to Roma.
