When you doom scroll, you come across many different places that are true hidden gems. Door To Nowhere, or Heigold House, is definitely an oddity and salute to the past. Some housekeeping, you know, things to know about this place. BE CAREFUL. This sits on a roundabout island with steady traffic. Be mindful to the traffic flow and businesses nearby (I parked at a nearby business off the road and walked over here). Be kind to the natural beauty that surrounds this. And most of all, be respectful. As I said, this sits on a roundabout with flowerbeds surrounding it. Whether you are facing front, as in looking at the front of the façade, or looking from the rear, please stay on the sidewalks provided. Take in the informational plaques as well. Built by Christian H Heigold, a successful stonecutter. Majority of the house was completed in 1853. Heigold was a master at stonecutting and completed the home with busts of Presidents George Washington and James Buchanan. Heigold was also a staunch opponent of the 'Know Nothing Party,' and anti-immigration political party and I would like to think that he built his house with all the busts was a big middle finger to those that were anti-immigration. This façade sat in what was known as the The Point neighborhood, which was favored by those that moved to the city from the New Orleans area. Once Louisville diverted the Beargrass Creek away from downtown, this place started to flood annually. Shifting people away from the neighborhood and then the Great Flood of 1937 happened. Slowly the city started buying houses and demolishing them. Ultimately using the land as a dump site. Then this façade was listed on the National Registry of Historical Places. Remained in that area which became Thruston Park. That is until a developer bought the land adjacent to this and build condos. They moved this massive beast, 70,000-pounds, across River Road to where it sits today.

Very scenic and interesting park that I stumbled across by accident while ironically attending a…read moreyelp event down the street with my family and some of my daughters friends. There is a small gravel parking lot behind this church and park area. The park area has some really cool and interesting sights. The winged man statue, a tiny door, a cool angel statue, and a nice wooden gazebo with a clock painting at the top. The guard rails had handcuffs attached to them so the kids had fun with that. Tiny place but it packs a lot of cool and interesting sights in it. They also have some picnic tables over to the right to sit and relax or have a picnic. Overall this adorable and peaceful park was a nice surprise and based on it only having one review so far it's a hidden gem for the new Albany area. Cool place that any park or public art person should absolutely check out. I'm glad we stumbled upon this place by accident.

The Division Street School is a hidden landmark in New Albany! There is not much promotion for it,…read morebut there should be! It documents African-American educational history after the Civil War in southern Indiana and is one of Indiana's oldest segregated schools. In 1885 it became one of the first of hundreds of African-American schools, this school taught up to 60 children ages 1-6th grades until it closed in 1946. In 1999, Friends of Division Street School restored the building and in 2002 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Now the school serves as a museum, and every 4th grader in it county attends class there for a day to gain real-life historical experience. The museum was closed when we visited, however we got to look through the window and read the historical plaques outside. I'm not sure that it is open to the public without an appointment, but would be even a drive-by!

The marker reads, "Five Indiana regiments were formed at this rendezvous point in 1846-1847 for service in the Mexican War. The first 3,000 men departed for active duty under Brigadier-General Joseph Lane during July, 1846." For those unfamiliar, the Mexican-American war lasted from 1846 to 1848 and followed the US annexation of Texas which Mexico still considered Mexican territory since the government did not recognize the treaty signed by Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna when he was a prisoner of the Texian Army during the 1836 Texas Revolution. The war was decisively won by the United States and the Treaty of Guadelupe Hidalgo was signed in 1848. The treaty gave the United States undisputed control of Texas and established the US-Meixcan border of the Rio Grande. It also ceded to the United States the present-day states of California, Nevada, and Utah, most of New Mexico, Arizona and Colorado, and parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Wyoming. The marker is in excellent condition and is on two sides. On the first side, it reads "New Albany lots were advertised for sale 1813. It was designated county seat 1819, incorporated as town 1836, then as city 1839. Area within the district was part of early plat of New Albany. District boundaries are roughly West 1st to East 5th streets and East Spring to East and West Main streets." On the second side, "District reflects the historical development and commercial growth of New Albany. It contains a collection of outstanding examples of nineteenth and twentieth century commercial and institutional buildings and a few domestic structures. There's a stunning view of the falls and the city of Louisville. There is a replica of the slave cabin and only the chimney of the house which burned down in 2021. There is also a small picnic area.

Lewis & Clark Started here!…read more This is evidently where General George Rogers Clark started recruiting a team of people for discovery that became the Lewis & Clark Expedition. They left here on October 26, 1803 and returned on November 5, 1806. The house is locked, but what I was told is that in the warmer months it's opened up and you can walk around inside. There isn't much to see as far as the property goes, but turn around and look at the gorgeous falls of the Ohio river, downtown Louisville and the bridges. It's breathtaking!!

When I go out of town I always make it a point to take in local culture. Yeah, I hit the main spots…read morethat are the heavy hitters in that area, but I always seek out something that a visitor like me wouldn't go to on a visit. I was confused by the naming of the bridge until I looked it up afterwards. I was wondering why they gave it the Big Four name. If you have no knowledge of the area and are just looking at the bridge, you might end up scratching your head. There are six tresses, not four. So yeah, by looks, you know it didn't get that name, unless someone thought why not confuse people. The name comes from when this was a railroad bridge. Gaining its name from the defunct Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago, and St. Louis Railway, which was nicknamed as the Big Four Railroad.. Lord, that's a mouthful, hence Big Four. It served as a railway bridge when it was first built in 1895 and continued as such after the 1929 rebuild. Served as this type of bridge up until 1968. Then it sat for a while, with the approach spans were removed around 1975 earning it the name "Bridge That Goes Nowhere." Big Four definitely has a better ring to it. Then in 2013 they converted this to bicycle and pedestrian crossing that connects Louisville to Jeffersonville. Want to hear something funny/stupid? When I first visited here I thought I could walk from my hotel to downtown using this bridge. I know better now. The spanning of the Ohio River is nearly a half mile, so yeah, glad I decided against that. I want to say that I saw a sign on the Louisville side that said the approach span was a quarter of a mile since you need to get to elevation of the span. Crazy to think I thought I'd be able to walk nearly a mile across the river each day when I visited last time. I'm going to be honest. I ascended and descended just the Louisville side. I didn't want to cross at any point and waste daylight while I was here. I did my touristy thing here and got back in my vehicle to head back out. With all the parks and walking trails nearby, this is definitely a busy area and you need to pay attention while driving through here.

The Big Four Bridge continues to be such a special part of downtown Louisville…read more We brought my kids across it recently -- this was the first time they were both big enough to walk it themselves -- and it was a joy to get to experience walking across the Ohio River through them. There is so much to see along the waterfront! We looked at boats, birds, barges, buildings, the Belle -- promise not everything started with the letter "B." The benches along the way provided a great respite when we needed a second, and the breeze was perfect on the warm day. The bridge itself is also just pretty to look at, whether it's the way the beams come together at the top (OK, there are a lot of "B" words in this) or how it lights up at night. The Big Four is also prime people watching. We passed a couple taking engagement portraits, other kiddos, sketch artists and more. And once in Indiana, we found a restaurant to eat at for dinner less than a block away. The Big Four is a gem that I'm proud to have in Louisville.

I didn't find the Garden but I did find the historical marker that describes the site and the…read morehistory. It is located at the corner of Bradley and Presidents. The marker reads, "The Grotto (D.X. Murphy & Bros., Architects) was dedicated in 1927 as a place for contemplation on St. Joseph Infirmary grounds. Two-story, half-domed, concrete apse is faced on inside with stones and rubble. Modeled on natural grotto at Lourdes, SW France, where Virgin Mary appeared to Bernadette Soubirous in 1858." And on the reverse, "Their statues adorned Louisville Grotto. Masonry walls enclose Grotto's Garden. Fourteen arched niches, since filled in, held mosaics of Stations of the Cross, events from end of Jesus' life. Dwane Beckhart painted modern replacements. Named state landmark by Ky. These angels won't murals are popping up all over and make for fun photo ops and always seem to be popular. I will Give credit to This one for being more vibrant and large enough to make the photo ops look more realistic. Overall a cool and fun mural that can be found outside an arepas serving eatery in the st Mathews community of Lousiville Kentucky.
