Back in 2018, when visiting NZ on holiday, we were recommended Fork & Brewer by a local from another bar because of their massive IPA tap list. The gentleman drew us the worst map ever, and we had the grandest experience traversing the city in search of the 'so-called IPA Oasis'. When we finally arrived, we absolutely loved our experience, ordering IPA flights, chatting with the friendly staff, and enjoying the ambiance of the funky art, brew handles, and overall bar vibe. When we discovered this visit, to NZ-South Island-would result in a day in Wellington, we immediately added Fork & Brewer to our itinerary! The same day the trip was booked, I found myself online looking at their tap list, getting my agenda ready, as well as looking at the map route from our restaurant to draw an upgraded traversing the city route. Again, our experience was absolutely fantastic. This particular visit, we arrived Tuesday mid-day, giving us an empty-ish bar, allowing us the freedom to chat with the friendly staff again, learning about craft beer development in NZ since our last visit. This time, we were surprised (and elated) to discover we no longer needed horrible maps from locals, NZ had their own Beer Trail maps. We talked through the flight we ordered with the bartender, told him our ratings of the beer, and suddenly he was circling must-trys in the area. What a great drinking spot! A must-stop for craft beer lovers. The flights are reasonably priced, and the taps seem to rotate frequently, so there is a great variety. Can't wait to visit again.

Had to visit Fork & Brewer since this was my husband's favorite place on a prior trip, and now it is one of my favorites (after visiting several restaurants in Wellington). It is definitely a beer lovers' paradise since it is a brewery and you can try many beers you haven't tried before. Not only do they have a page worth of beers on draft but I counted 5 additional pages of bottled beers and drinks including wine and cider. My husband usually gets a flight to try several beers but today he went with a German Pilsner (Golden Handshake by Fork Brewing) which they also had on draft but happened to be their $6 bottle special (500 ml so that's a great deal!) and he really liked it. I bought a Moa Apple Cider on draft which was sweet and refreshing. An added bonus was that they had a kids menu for my kids!! For $12.50 the kids got a soda or juice, a meal, and ice cream sundae. Both my kids chose chicken skewers with chips (other options included burger and chips, fish and chips, amongst other options). The kids liked their chicken at first but after a while they said it was spicy. I chose the steak and chicken fajitas which was absolutely delicious! I loved the sautéed onions and red peppers that accompanied the nicely seasoned meat. The steak and chicken were so good my kids enjoyed tasting the meats as well (and traded pieces of their spicy chicken with me). My husband ordered curly fries which the kids ate and they gave him their chips and I also shared the fajitas with him since it was a large entree. The curly fries tasted like Arby's fries which we LOVE! We will definitely return here to try more beers and we also considered one of their large sharing platters which I think we'll try next time. They are listed on their website and in case you don't get a menu just ask them for their sharing platters menu.

Tucked upstairs, Fork & Brewer has by far one of the best selection of great craft beer we experienced during our two weeks traveling throughout New Zealand! Upon walking upstairs you are met with the aroma of delicious malt coming from the small brew system. Making a right or left leads to large seating areas and the bar area. There is a small outdoor patio which is great for relaxing outside. Moving on to the important stuff... Fork & Brewer have about thirty of their own beers on tap - stouts, ipas, pilsners, hefeweizens, sours, gose - there is literally a beer for everyone. Prices ranged from $8.00-$11.00. We took advantage of their four beer paddles ($15.00) to sample a majority of the offerings. While most, if not all, of their beers were fantastic, they had THE best sours from anything we tried in New Zealand. Decent pub food selection consisting of burgers, fish n chips, pizza, pies, fries, salads, and various sharing plates. We ordered a margarita pizza ($18.00) and later some wedges ($9.00). Both were good, though the pizza was more of a personal size, but plenty to snack on. Prices of the other offerings were fairly reasonable. Would highly recommend Fork & Brewer as a must stop for anyone searching for a selection of great New Zealand craft beers. Cannot wait to return!

Generous sandwich of slaw and gently seasoned pulled pork. Hand cut fries. Delicious but subtle.

Gastro-pub with probably 30+ beers on tap. Also broad specials board of feature beers. Mains and entrees were well made. Roomy location. But stout beer donuts were hard and little. And the plate was smeared with chocolate sauce so it looked.... In general we liked it but will have to think twice about getting desserts.

I made it my mission to come here first on this trip and was thankful I did. Fortune Favours has gone through some ownership changes, but is once again independent and making great beer. This is a working brewery, taproom, and lounge. They have cozy booths, bar stools, plus an upstairs bar including outdoor seating. It's right off of Hannahs Laneway, which is a must-visit area of the city with other amazing art galleries, restaurants, cafes, and bars. The staff was super welcoming that day, thank you Phill and Grant for the fun conversation, a couple free beers, and gift of neckerchief for my pup! I ordered a flight and stuck with some of the rarer styles: thankfully I was there during their anniversary so they had a number of throwback kegs on tap. All the beer was delicious; I also ordered a Gorilla Burger from next door and really enjoyed it. One of the only souvenirs I bought for myself this trip was a pint glass with their signature font, it's a new favorite. If you're a beer fan in Wellington, this is a must-visit and part of the ale trail.

Having started at Fork & Brewer, which was an old favorite spot from our previous visit in 2018- their fantastic brewer helped us circle must-try spots on the Beer Trail map, based on our preferences. Fortune Favours was not circled. Along our journey, in-between bars, we decided we wanted to stop and grab some grub and began our search for a recommended dumpling spot. Along our route, we smelled something absolutely delicious & also saw an amazing dinosaur graffiti down a long back alley..and bam! we found ourselves at Fortune Favours. Entering the bar, we asked, 'what smells so good?!' while perusing the menu-only to be told they were baking dog biscuits with the spent grains..whomp whomp. So we awkwardly decided to just leave & carry on our dumpling search, asking the friendly bartender if he could give us some better directions-to which he provided ample recommendations for eating. Arriving to our dumpling spot- we discovered a 'short staff closed sign' and decided to return to the friendly bartender at Fortune Favours. Glad for the misadventure, and friendliness, because the beers were quite delicious! I can understand why they weren't recommended to us, because the beers we ended up with weren't hazy citra ipas, so it was a veer from our normal enjoyments- but we were glad for the variety. I got the Rye Pale Ale- a piney, roasty, smooth malty hops- while my husband got a cold brut ipa-crisp and dank. We got to spend time with the bartender talking impact of shortages on the breweries, and learning more about the local area Beer Trail. Really glad we ended up here, if anyone asks us moving forward to circle spots on a Beer Trail map we will most certainly circle this location!!

This is a dive bar in feel, but it's still kept tastefully clean and welcoming. It's dog friendly inside and out; they have a porch with outdoor tables that they kind of enclose in the winter. The bar is as kitschy fun as possible, with skis, Star Wars memorabilia, lights, buckets, and all kinds of beer stuff covering every inch. They have an amazing selection of draft beer, plus and cans and bottles and other alcohol. Tables are perfect for different sized groups. I came with a local friend who reminisced about early dates with his now wife here - how much they loved the vibe, pizza, and drinks. The high top tables have old faux-leather chairs, mostly torn and comfortable. Prices here are reasonable too for the local beer selection. The bartenders were happy and laughing as we arrived, they were nice all afternoon during our visit. Pizza is from a spot next door, but you can order and pay at the bar, and they'll bring it right to your table. This is a top spot in Wellington.

Overall, they have a wide variety of beers including sours and we tried multiple and bought some to bring home. I came to this location while waiting for my partner and it was pretty busy and all the tables were taken. While I was here, they were training a new person so grabbing a beer was kind of slow. This location is a little small. Their newer location on Leeds street is much bigger and more comfortable. The other location I went to was across the street one block down which sells to go bottles and cans while this one doesn't. The seating is all built in with a large bar, and plenty of tables for singles, doubles, or small groups. The bar takes full advantage of being the brewery's taproom with more selections than you could drink. They do not offer flights here (sampling is across the street), so be sure to look for special things on draught not available elsewhere. The staff was super friendly and easy to deal with.
