Came in to Mac's Brewbar because our kids live on chicken fingers and fries and they have this option on their kids menu. Happy to find much broader selections for me and my husband. I went with an Asian Steak Salad that was delicious (loved the extra crunch from the Chinese noodles that topped it) and my husband went with a steak and cheese pie with fries. I tasted his pie too which was really good (brought back memories from the UK) but the gravy was a bit salty. I wanted to try their Mac's Apple cider on draft but it wasn't available so I got another cider option since they offered a few other ciders on bottle. My husband also ordered a Mac's Brewery pale ale. Love that you can get their beer here since my husband and I are big craft beer fans. The food arrived quickly which was great because we were hungry but it arrived before our drinks. The vibe is cool, when you walk in there's large bar tops that would be perfect for happy hour with friends. I made a booking for the restaurant side and we were seated right away. My picky kids liked the chicken fingers and fries (surprisingly they are so picky that they don't always approve of the chicken and fries), so that means we'll be back! read more

In New Zealand, my beer of choice was Mac's Gold. Restaurants, airports, fish and chip stands, pubs... it's like ordering a Brooklyn lager in Brooklyn. The beer is fine, but I like the logo and typography more. This pub by the waterfront in Wellington has a very spacious outdoor patio to enjoy the many varieties of Mac's. I can imagine this place being a very popular after work spot, if drinking with coworkers is your thing. read more

What a nice experience I had here. I booked for early dinner as I was heading to a show at nearby Circa Theatre. I arrived starving and ready to eat. My server showed me to a nice table with view of the passing world along the waterfront. I enjoyed a glass of Four Bandits Sauvignon Blanc and ordered the Fish of the Day. My server was very happy to accommodate my dietary requests, which was appreciated. Note - side dishes are not listed on the menu but are available to those who ask. I requested a side of vegetables. I let my server know I had a time constraint for the theatre and so my meal came quite quickly. I noted to him that although the menu noted it, my dish didn't include asparagus. A wee bit chilly in Wellington when we went but we sat on the patio and the view is amazing of the harbour. We went inside to order and the *hunkiest* guy came to take out order... OK, Australian and New Zealand men have it going on between the accent and the abs but I digress... We were talking about food right? First, we were at the brewery so of course we got the beers. Mom ordered the dark because she's all into the dark and more "flavourful" beers. She loved it. I had one of their gingerbeers before in Napier (another town) so I wanted to try something else. I had the pear and feijoa (some random berry) and it was awesome. Quite light and refreshing. As per recommendations, we ordered the fish and chips and the mesclun salad. The salad was pretty good. Lightly dressed with a variety of salad/lettuce like vegetables. The fish and chips were DA BOMB. Firstly, the fish was beautifully crisp and gooey on the inside. I did have to ask for malt vinegar... They did give us a lemon but it was a sweet lemon, which was a little weird. Secondly, the fries. I have never finished a plate of fries in my life and I devoured them. Now, I don't think these fries are any different than the fried we get in Canada so maybe it's the potato... anyway, don't know but it was ridiculous how tasty it was. So highly recommended. Wow. What a chicken sandwich. Hands down best ever had.. wife and I thought we would grab a beer and a bite to escape the rain and wind. She ordered the chicken sandwich and I the pulled pork. Both sandwiches we're great and quite large. Definitely could have shared. But we typically split and have best of both worlds. Great service fast and hot food. Good variety of beer choices as well. Had a spicy pulled pork burger and a Birthday Suit IPA. The food was nice, but I feel the pulled pork would have been better served not so spicy, as it killed all other tastes pretty efficiently. And a place like this should really let their fantastic beers shine. The Birthday Suit was a lovely world class IPA that made me feel all warm an fuzzy inside. Until replaced by the more aggressive heat from the burger. The place is very nice, in a perfect harbor location. I would probably have found the sound level of the main bar area a little distracting, had I been here with friends. But the beer. Oh. Mmmm read more

So this didn't start out well. It's Boxing Day so a decent crowd but the queue to order at the bar was literally only three people long. We got to the front of the queue and suddenly two people cone up beside us and the barman ignores us. One time I can put down to a mistake but when he ugnored us for the second guy, I had to tell him no, we were there first. He mumbled something about other people waiting which makes zero sense as we were in the original friggin queue. But the worst part was when one of the mains had not come out by the time everyone else had finished eating. In the end we cancelled that main and got a refund on it. While giving the refund is good, that's not a reason to manage the timing so badly. Was this related to the wait time for the first order? We knew it might be a while so half an hour isn't that bad. But to spread out the orders so badly? Something was very wrong in that kitchen. The quality of the food was pretty average. But then we didn't go to a pub on Boxing day, expecting great food. So what came out was ok. Just competent service would have been nice. Two stars because other front of house staff did try to check on the last order (at least twice) and processed the refund promptly. read more

The quality and variety of beers at this place is awesome. I tried a few and they were all good. It would only be possible to try all of the on several trips or a bender of some kind. The food was a different matter. Both my dining partner and I both felt the meals we had were quite bland. Pork belly and oven roasted chicken breast respectively. The potato gratin with the chicken was quite tasty but the rest not so much. In the chicken meals defense I did not eat the chicken skin and skipped adding any salt. However the menu has plenty of other options available and I would still come again and try one of the other meals with an array of beers. read more
