We opted to board the dogs and leave for vacation while they did the floors. When we left, we made sure that our home security system was working as it was connected to everything- cameras both inside and out, our thermostat, our water sensors, our smoke and fire alarms. Literally everything that anyone would need to feel comfortable leaving their house for 10 days. They asked us to set the thermostat at 70, which we did and I confirmed was still running when they arrived Monday morning. About 6 hours after the crew arrived, our entire system went dead. We were no longer able to access anything remotely nor did we have any camera footage. On Wednesday, the day the project was supposed to have been complete, they informed us that our house was too humid and the floors weren't drying. They were going to need a few more days. Which was fine, because we were out of town anyway. When we arrived home on Sunday, the first thing we did was try to troubleshoot the home security system and get everything back up. This is when we discovered that our entire system had been shut off via our breaker box. No, the fuses were not "blown", as they were not showing red. But rather the breakers for our wifi, security system and 1 additional circuit spanning half of our basement had simply been turned off. On top of that, our floors were not awesome. It literally looked as though we attempted this ourselves. We had left about 30 boards to choose from and asked them to replace two boards by the door that had been heavily damaged by water. They picked a board that was not a good color match and just called it good enough. No attempt was made to try to color match with stain, nor did they pick another board. In several corners, thick pools of stain were left to dry, leaving behind rough unfinished patches. There were several areas of uneven sanding, including one area where a bunch of wood splinters got caught in my sock. We contacted Pat at A.T. Frank and he sent the crew back out for "touch ups", which is not something we've ever experienced with a refinish of a wood floor. One man showed up, not to address the floor, but rather to explain why he was messing around in our electrical box. He needed a 240 volt plug and couldn't find one, so he took the entire panel off of our breaker box, unplugged our Air Conditioning unit and used that. His excuse for why our security system was flipped off was to tell my husband "you try putting that thing back on without flipping breakers and if you can, I'll give you $5". So even if we take him at his word that he did not intentionally disable our entire security system, he's negligent for not making sure that all of the breakers were in their original place. I guess we should all just be thankful that he didn't disable the new sump pump. This little excursion into our breaker box, without informing us or asking for permission, also explains why the project took longer than it was supposed to; they managed to break our AC unit in the process. To their credit, A.T. Frank sent an HVAC specialist immediately when alerted to the problem. By the time the crew came back out to do patch work on our floor we had already returned from our 10 day absence and had a house full of our pets and family. When I expressed my extreme annoyance at having to navigate 7 spots on our floor with everyone living here, Pat informed me that it was "just a minor inconvenience". He also said that pine floors were difficult to do- something he never once mentioned in the quote, nor in the preparation for this project. I asked him if these were professionals that should have known how to do a difficult job and he said yes, but offered nothing else. Essentially just a shrug. In all, they had to return 3 times for repairs, plus send a crew out to fix our AC. Our final communication with them was Pat sending us two emails with just an invoice attached- no body to the email, no follow-up phone call asking if we were happy with the repairs, no accountability for this whole mess at all.

That should have been my first red flag. He never called to say he couldn't make it as of course we sat around waiting for him. We ended up calling several times leaving messages with no advail. Once we did get ahold of him and he gave me an excuse and again he would stop by the end of the week. Again another no show. As weeks passed with no phone conversation I called again. Now three months has passed and I called again. He answered and he gave me another excuse how busy and he couldn't make down to Oscoda. I finally said that we were more than patient with him and I said if he didn't want to do the job why didn't he just say he didn't want the work! He actually hung up on me! So people, I would take a second look at this establishment before he waste your time unless you possibly have a 20,000 dollar kitchen make over, he doesn't want to do the small jobs. it's not worth his time. Looking at his work from pictures his customers posted looks very generic for kitchen makeovers. He's a poor business man. With no consideration for his customers needs.

We had to call and text him numerous time to get him to our home. He showed up on a Saturday afternoon talking rapidly and appeared very nervous. Unfortunately he measured wrong. The template he created was at least an inch off. When the installers finally came with the product (another lengthy wait and another Saturday), they only had the template Dan had created to work with. They were professional but the final shower was off by at least an inch leaving us with large gaps in the drywall and in between the tile floor and the shower base. The other problem was the finished product was not the color we had picked from the sample board. When we talked to Dan bout this, his response was the sample boards fade and he never knows what he is going to get from the Durastone factory in Texas. We decided we needed to pull this product out and replace it with a white durastone product. When we communicated this to Dan, he responded with a very rude email that he was writing us off as a loss and would not do further business with us. It is August now. We had the shower temporarily plumbed and set up for our elderly parents who visit in the summer but we ar still dealing with what to do about this shower. This is the master shower of the master bath of our home. Buyers beware of Dan Bishop and Americast. His customer service and product leave much to be desired.

Yesterday, the granite was installed; if we could rate this company a 10 we would in a heartbeat. We met Jim Herrick, one of the owners, first: his knowledge in this industry is incredibly deep. His dedication to his customers' satisfaction is unwavering and both really mattered for us. He guided us through the selection process which is more nuanced than it seems. When a slab choice didn't immediately jump out at us, rather than push us into a lukewarm choice, he facilitated our access to his suppliers so we would have even more of a selection. We eventually chose a slab in his inventory that proved perfect for our little cabin. His staff moved quickly to schedule the measurement (templating); the guys who did that with high tech equipment were careful and the measurements were precise. The team that cut and polished the stone took great pride in their work and yesterday, his installation team, working carefully with our contractor, did a phenomenal installation in our quirky, ancient log cabin. They hit all the details and it shows. Mr. Herrick's focus on his customers' satisfaction was obvious in every phase and is a focus clearly shared by every member of his team. To a person, they communicated well throughout, were accommodating in scheduling and unwavering in the quality of their work. When we first addressed the countertop issue, we were encouraged by many others to shop the "big box" stores. Mr. Herrick's patient education persuaded us that looking for a bargain basement price was the wrong priority, even for "just a log cabin" restoration. Seeing first-hand their attention to detail, the uncompromising work at every stage, all influenced by a commitment to their customers' satisfaction (vs just making a sale) validated our decision to use Herrick's shop. Ours was hardly a million dollar job but throughout the whole experience they treated us like it was and we'll be grateful for decades.

We met our interior designer at their showroom and had our architectural plans with us, which I recommend. The process of choosing materials for your home's counter-tops, backsplashes, and other surfaces couldn't be easier. I recall them having a good amount of "stock" surfaces to choose from when we built back in 2011, but their choices have significantly expanded since then. We were able to select from a wide variety of quartz and granite at a very reasonable price point, but they have a huge selection of materials should you want something other than their stock selections. They are also happy to price out different material choices for you before you make your final choice, which makes the process that much better. Top it off with great service and professional installation and choosing Top of the World Granite becomes a no-brainer and I can recommend them without hesitation.
