It was a great way to spend a sunny day in Southampton. The crowd is diverse and super cool, there were families out on the hillside enjoying the sun and the marina view, there were a bunch of younger people enjoying the good weather as well. I hope I'm back soon :0)

We walk up to the host stand and are immediately told it's reservation only. "Great! I have a reservation." "Oh sorry! Head upstairs and they will take care of you." We go up a gorgeous staircase and find ourselves just standing there for a while. Someone finally comes over, confirming we have a reservation and we sit. Our server comes right away, drops two empty glasses (for water) and menus and immediately asks if we are ready. Nope, you just gave me the menu right now, I am not ready. She leaves and never comes back. She forgot about us. She apologized but it never got better. It was half an hour before we got our pints. Our appetizer came 15 min after this and our food came in another 30 min. It took an hour and 15 minutes to get a burger and chicken. Thankfully, the food was good. Oh, and those empty glasses for water, stayed empty until they finally remembered to bring us water, about 1 hour in. And before you ask, yes, I hailed other servers and asked for the water and the status of our meals. They seemed annoyed they had to pick up her slack and maybe kind of took it out on us by doing things for their tables first before ours, which I understand but still kind of sucks. Would I come back? Absolutely not. However, it's so pretty and such a cool building and the beers and food were good so I do recommend checking it out.

I don't know if I've ever had more genuinely nice, or good, service at a restaurant ever. We managed to stumble in off the street and get a table before most of the other diners arrived, as the place was fully booked. We had the table for just over an hour, so it was fairly rushed, though we felt very lucky and glad we settled on Forresters. There are a couple of things that could have been better: my rib eye steak, though a decent size, was quite thin and therefore came out medium well, rather than medium rare - probably unavoidable with such a thin cut. And we didn't really have time for it to be returned to the kitchen. Luckily it was still delicious and tender, but I always find overcooked steak a little disappointing. And the cheesecake dessert appeared within a minute of ordering it. I know most restaurants prepare items like this in advance, but even one minute more and it wouldn't have felt like it had been whipped straight out of the fridge. Again, this is largely because we had such little time, and it tasted great anyway. The good points far outweighed these niggles though - my friend's duck looked perfectly cooked and by all accounts it was. I had a surprisingly excellent side salad, the presentation of the food was pleasing but not fussy, the ambience was relaxed, the whole experience was enjoyable and especially so because of the warmest, friendliest (and somehow totally unobtrusive) service I think I've ever had. My only regret is that I think I forgot to tip when I left, which is something I intend to make up for the next time I dine there.

It manages to be cosy and airy at the same time. Choice-wise, the menu was excellent and each dish which our table of 4 received was not only carefully considered, but perfectly executed and beautifully presented. The maitre d', Amanda, was an absolutely perfect host, both warm and personable but also respectful of one's space and privacy, with a knack of just being there when you needed her, and away tending to others when you did not. We were all 4 of us so impressed with this place, we asked if she would ever have any plans to move the whole setup to London (where we live); she said we were the 3rd table to ask that in the 12 weeks since they opened (!) and this does not surprise me. This place is absolutely head and shoulders over anywhere else in Yarmouth that I have tried. If you like good choice, carefully devised, delicious, classy food served in a calm, pleasant but memorable atmosphere then this is the place for you. Excellent stuff.
