A huge organic selection. A whole shelf of tea. Racks of dried fruits (I am not addicted to dried figs), nuts (cashews!) and I even found jars of sunflower butter here...which is surprisingly good and a good alternative to peanut butter (which they also have). Fantastic ethnic cooking section chock full of sauces, ingredients, grains, rices, beans and any element you probably need, spices, decent bakery with breads, rolls, pitas, etc. Eggs and dairy, beer, wine, a lot of coconut water, and a fresh produce section (outside) which is standard, but nice to have. Things you won't find: fresh meats or fish. Par for the course! The family that runs it is very friendly as well (always so polite!) and I always leave feeling quite good about supporting a local food shop that is not only convenient, but tucked away from the madness of the Old Street roundabout. Clissold Wines is a friendly family-run store which has an excellent selection of low-mid price wines, spirits and beers. They always run a few cheap offers in big wooden crates next to the door- I went in last night and they had 3 different 3 for 10 pound white wine offers. As well as inexpensive offerings, they also have an excellent range of riojas and sancerres from about 12 pounds upwards. The staff are friendly and helpful and have two beautiful cats who sit behind the till.

There is always a bargain to be had, which is why I keep going back. The specials are often at give-away prices. I also keep going back because I love the people who run the store. Church street can get a it carried away with its prices sometimes, and Clissold keeps it down to earth.

The shop is fairly wee and the, ahem, 'pyramid' of canned beer in the center of the floor sort of forces one to move in either a clockwise or counter-clockwise direction around the room. Along one wall stands the growler (tee-hee) station for purchasing and re-fills, which, by the way, is pretty special. The only other place in town where I've had the pleasure of buying refillable jugs of beer is in the massive Whole Foods store in Kensington. For those wanting to imbibe a 'cold one' directly after purchase, there's a full beer fridge at the back of the shop. CC is excellently placed along Lower Clapton Rd. with a handful of buses stopping right out front. Beer lovers and the beer-curious would do well to visit!

Unlike the salespeople at a wine shop further north on Upper Street, staff at Spirited Wines don't make you feel like you're interrupting their day with the tedious chore of recommending a bottle when you walk through the door. This is a welcoming, approchable wine store with passion to spare. I will keep visiting arguably too often.

After being rudely directed to the Manager to pursue the request, we were snappily told to come back on a Tuesday between 10am and 12noon to see the wife of the Manager as he could not help us without his wife's say so. When my colleagues revisited as suggested they were told the wife was not present that day and was given the brush off. We were not asking for several hundred pounds of goods but maybe a box of chocolates to raffle off. Awful, shoddy treatment. I will not spend any more money there and will let friends know also.
