Anyone who has any interest in sci-fi and anime will have spent every Saturday in one of these stores. Dotted around the country, you were lucky enough if you could visit one of these stores on a regular basis. For me, whilst others dabbled in long sessions of clothes shopping, I geeked out in one of these stores whenever I had a chance. After all, this was basically the only store that remotely sold anime-related paraphernalia or quirky little bits and pieces. Unfortunately, as a tween, anime was not as popular as now and the section dedicated was tiny in branches I visited. Over the years, the manga book selections have increased but at this particular store, it is still quite limited. For me, this store didn't offer much. I'm not a gamer (board and card) or particilarly comic-book orientated but this store defiantly would meet your needs if you are. There lots of comicbooks, board games, card games, cool artwork books etc... and it is to my understanding that members meet to play and socialise regularly. read more

The selection in Forbidden Planet is pretty good, but overall subpar compared to other FPs I've visited. The store itself is greatly in need of a refit, and more importantly the staff are rude and have zero skills in customer service. I said thanks to the guy behind the till as I left and he just blanked me. Great job. There's another comics/manga store just a few doors away, sadly I can't remember it's name, but it's better in every way than this store. Especially customer service. read more

This is my favourite place to shop for sci-fi in Newcastle. It is a small shop, slightly out of the way of the main shopping area and stuck on the side of Newgate street shopping mall, which is very quiet. The shop is little and dark - the windows are almost always obscured by displays and posters - which are up to date and relevant. It is bustling with stock inside. There is barely any space to walk. This is all quite exciting if you are a big sci-fi nut as it means more to look at and scramble through! There are a lot of figures and doll type products available. These are usually on the left after you enter. The DVDs are usually on the right of the store. They are slightly higher priced than online or even other high street retailers. For instance I went to buy a Quantum Leap DVD and it was a good £15 more expensive than the nearest DVD store. Saying that, you are almost certain to get what you want here as it stocks little known sci-fi gems that mainstream retailers shun. There is a manga section at the back of the store which is a massive, impressive collection. They also stock spin off merchandise from most sci-fi shows and films. The staff are really into sci-fi (I'm sure this is a condition of emplyment here!) and will have a good chat to you and really help you get what you want. They can order in special things if they don't have them. This store is usually frequented by the typical sci-fi fan - you know the type - I'm one of them too and this is just geek heaven! read more

I give this place a 1star as it is only good for the comics and other stuff it sells, it does have a vast array of comics , graphic novels, film memorabilia and general fantasy world type of stuff, but I find the place very smelly, the staff are very band mannered, rude offensive and not very helpful they seem to think there better than everybody else to the point of it angering you. If it is literally the last place you can get what you want then go other than that go elsewhere. I love the whole comic book graphic novel and fantasy world stuff. But will not go into this shop because of the awful customer service, but you can not knock them on there stock, you name it they probably have it. But you can probably find the same stuff online and cheaper. read more

Forbidden planet is excellent for fun and original gifts. I think it is a bit overpriced, you can often find the same things cheaper online. Staff are friendly and helpful and the service is quick. read more

This is the ultimate geek shop in Newcastle and I can spend hours browsing for cute and quirky gifts for friends and my boyfriend. However it is slightly over priced, but sometimes it is worth it since they order in things from their catalogue or if it is out of stock. They have lots of different things from comic books to games and even t-shirts. I've also bought a book or two from here. The shop itself is situated between Central Station and Grey's Monument so it's pretty easy to find. However it is slightly intimidating from the outside and when you first enter as you become so awe struck by the general mass of products! The staff are very helpful but not overly pushy. The shop always has people in too but the staff still make time to help you out. read more

Forbidden Planet is a small independent sci-fi and comic store. It is crammed full of games, toys, comics and DVDs and often there are good bargains to be had. The full price items are more expensive than can be found on the high street or online, however there are often mystery bags of comics at 5 comics for £1 or 10 of the better ones for £5. You can find some rare items in the toys section, and games and figure's you would never have known existed. The shop seems a little scary due to the sheer amount of goods crammed in, and the blacked out windows do not encourage passers by to wander in. read more

Forbidden Planet is a great little shop in Newcastle, the shop is about 5minutes walk away from Monument metro station. It specialises in manga, comics and sci-fi. As many other reviewers have stated the place is absolutely jam packed with interesting little trinkets, as you enter on the left there is a large selection of action figures and collectables, on the right there is DVDs and magazines and in the middle there is books. The back of the store is the comic section and has many racks with the new weekly arrivals on and large shelves collecting all the latest and past graphic novels. Although the prices on these may be more expensive than say Amazon you can be certain that the book will not be damaged in transit. The staff are extremely knowledgeable and will help with anything, if you ring up and ask for something they will know straight away whether they have it in stock and if not they can order it for you.
