A good quality sci-fi / comics / rpg store - if a little over crowded and unwelcome on busy days.
First off, travelling man is down the street, which in my opinion is the lesser of the two shops for quality and quantity of goods. Both fill the same comic book / memorabilia role for Newcastle. FP however wins out on top for the sheer quantity of stuff that makes you go 'awww cool'.
One thing I agree with the other reviewers is that the place is very dark and dingy. This seems to be the theme throughout the forbidden planet stores whereever I go, and the amount of unwashed nerds/geeks in the store gives a sweaty-BO musk to the whole store, especially when its hot or wet outside. This puts me off brining people to it, especially women / friends who happen to be girls which frankly the store could use more of.
Downstairs has been refurbished to be brighter and cleaner, giving the store a duality - upstairs is cramped and packed, where as downstairs feels full but open to browse. I hope they expand or get rid of the over-crowded shelves upstairs and let some light into the top floor - and replaced that awful carpet - if they did it would certainly be a 5 star place to be at.
Content wise the place is full of unusual stuff you buy once and make an effort to show everyone who comes over. I could spend a fortune there. They also have a reasonable (and i only mean reasonable) selection of DVD's, but they always seem to be having a perpetual sale which makes the prices competative with that of HMV up the road. Especially on obscure Anime. Much like travelling man they only have a small selection of busts and models, but sometimes you come across a gem or two in the rough.
The staff are okay once you get to know them. The problem is, like many of the patrons, they are socially inept nerds who lack social graces and a sense of tact when it comes to conversation. They tend to give you the cold shoulder till you buy something they 'like' and you can break the ice to talk to them about. Not a problem for regular visitors, but It does put off one-offs and first timers from coming again. I recommend you try a bit harder to get to know them because they can be very straight forward and hard to chat with usually giving yes or no answers to everything since they fear conversation. But press them and managed to peel a bit of info or two from them and you can have a good 15 minute banter at the till as you pay for stuff.
By far the most interesting guy there is the ex-warhammer store manager (phil?). He's pretty sound to talk to and has a good knowledge of whats new, whats in store and whats coming out in the next weeks.
All in all a 4 star store. The prices can be a little hefty but nearly everything you buy is worth the cash. Barring the crappy twilight merchandise that is! read more
