great big selection of second hand books. a lot of reviews talk about how the owner is rude, but i personally did not have that experience and found him to be very helpful and knowledgeable of where the books i was interested were at. obviously since it's a thrift bookstore, it's not going to be the best organized which makes finding certain books a gem that i did not mind at all! there were lots of new and old books, children books, posters, postcards, etc. i would definitely come by again to get more, and the prices were great :)

Such a magical bookstore to walk into! Truly a hidden gem in Hillcrest; an insane amount of great selections to look through from floor to ceiling, no joke. You could spend hours in here hiding between the shelves and looking through the stacks. For some that may be overwhelming, but for me it's a dream. Prices are marked inside the book or half the seller fee on the back. The smell of old books is all around and it's gorgeous. The owner is super friendly and helpful if you're looking for something specific. Have fun getting lost here

this place is absolutely stuffed! loved the used book collection, if you are the type who likes to thrift or look a little to pick a new book you'll enjoy this place. the owner was very nice as well, held large bags and beverages at front while you shopped.. there is also a capacity for the amount of people allowed in at once due to the tight nature of the place

Lovely bookstore located in a great neighborhood! This store had a huge variety of books. While it's a very small store it's very organized (in its own chaotic way) . The employee was very helpful and recommended what ended up being an amazing book. I could've spent all day in here. Definitely recommend!!

Two well-known used books for $18, not bad!

I'm someone who prefers to go to bookstores with used books, rather than new, so the cramped and intimate environment of Footnote comes as no surprise! The employee at the front (not sure if this was the owner) did ask to take our bags but this isn't something I was unfamiliar with, either. You get used to the organization, which seems like chaos at first, after studying the shelves for a little. Right away I found a book that's been on my list, and for a pretty good price given the area ("When God was a Woman" for $9). I thought the cooking section was very diverse, and though I didn't have time to check the fiction side I do want to come back another time. If you're looking for very clear organization and specific titles, this (or any used book store) might not be the best place to search first. Our experience with whoever works here was pleasant; he was communicative about closing for lunch and didn't make us feel uncomfortable while we browsed. I'd say this place is worth visiting after you read the reviews and determine for yourself if this is somewhere you want to give your business to! Good for a low-stakes weekend activity.

Convenient little book nook of a place. The guy who owns the place came off as rude, but I ignored his ugly self.

Was excited to check this out but it was closed by 6:15 instead of 6:30. Disappointed that the hours of operations were wrong.

Excellent collection. As dense and loaded with books as a real bookshop should be. Knowledgeable owner/operator.

What a nice independent bookstore! I can't tell you the last time I held a book in my hands (I…read moreknow! I kind of suck!), but I do love books and try to shop at them whenever I can. I love to give books or gift cards to bookstores to children. Bluestocking Books is the kind of bookstore I would specifically go out of my way to buy gifts for people, or to (gasp) buy a book for myself. There are little cozy nooks around the bookstore, as there should be in a bookstore. There's also a section for kids, with a little table and some reading material to peruse. Inexplicably, Bluestocking Books is closed on Wednesdays! What an interesting day to be closed, but I guess you have to be closed at least one day, right? Why not Wednesday? The people who work here are very friendly and helpful, and there's just a palpable welcoming vibe emanating from the store. It's a nice place to browse and find the perfect book.

Inside, they have a cozy and welcoming setup with both new and used books organized neatly by genres. The books are priced very fairly here and they have a good amount of books to dig through. Cool little Barnes and Noble in an old theater space! I love that they kept the theater marquee out…read morefront. It looks super cool! The bf also got a kick out of it since he worked as a theater manager for years and loves checking out different theaters. The inside of the store was pretty similar to other Barnes and Nobles, maybe a bit smaller. Good amount of book merch and themed table sections, but I think the lighting could have been a bit brighter. They were running some great deals before new years so I picked up a few new books. I have noticed that sometimes Barnes and Noble doesn't pick up the discounts listed on the stickers on the front covers of books, so I pay extra attention when those are rung up. The guy at the register was super nice and corrected it, no problem!

And of course, the Bookstar sign out front giving it old theater vibes. Selection was similar to what other B&N have. Their record section was cute, displayed in the front window. The store was well organized, easy to navigate, and had all the featured table displays. I was searching for The Knight and the Moth by Rachel Gillig when I went, but they were out of stock. The employee who helped me offered to call another store in the area, which was really nice of her! I ended up getting it at the Mission Valley location. Overall worth a visit, if only to take pictures of the cool sign. Otherwise, it's like any other Barnes & Noble.
