More worried about collecting $80 Here's the full story of Reese's end of life today. For a year I've been concerned about her pain and didn't want her suffering. Her Veterinarian was certain it was arthritis and could be managed. 6 months + of monthly injections and adding 2 more pain killers over that time nothing seemed to improve. Today was her arthritis injection appointment and having physically carried her in and outdoors the last 2 days to potty I called ahead and notified them it was time to end her suffering. A different Veterinarian in the practice saw her this morning and decided it her legs were "very bad and most likely advanced cancer" and was certainly the best decision. Heres what hurts, month after month after month of $200 vet technician appointments for arthritis treatments that apparently gave her no relief. The money isn't the issue as much as her extended suffering is if the diagnoses was that off. So, im sitting on the floor, my back against the public hall door of the examination room, her head in my lap. The Doc had given her a light sedative to relieve her anxiety so they could insert an IV needle and left the room saying she'd get sleepy in anout 10 mins. So im speaking softly to her rubber her ears,saying my goodbye's. This is her last 10 mins of knowing me, a time to be at peace and say goodbyes. Suddenly the door hits me in the back, its the front desk cashier. She says to me through the crack in the door, Mr Osward its gonna be 80 dollars today can i get your credit card or check if your using one and ill ring you up? "Are you serious I responded. I'm on the floor tears running down my face, my dogs head in my lap, her last moments of consciousness on earth, my last moments to console and comfort her and they interrupt it to get paid for a service they havent even performed yet...she hasnt even been put to sleep yet. I tossed a credit card through the crack in the door telling her to charge what she wanted. So thats the last few minutes with Reeses and the memory im probably stuck with. I was charged $31 for pills to stop diarrhea in which he did not suffer from. I was also given 4 cans of dog food for diarrhea. I took my dog and prayed that he pooped whatever he swallowed and he is fine now. However, I did witness several emergency situations and saw that the staff is highly skilled!

About 5 months ago my Chaweenie, Cassie suddenly became critically ill. She couldn't stand or walk and her head was flopping around in a circle. I thought she was having a stroke. I immediately called the vet. It was a Wednesday so Dr. Paul was not there. Dr. Anderson took her from me and did bloodwork on her. Her HCT was 14%. It should have been 40%. The vet should have told me right then to take her to the animal hospital. He did not. He just told me she had Immunocompromised Hemolytic Anemia and she had 30% chance of surviving. She absolutely needed Oxygen and Blood. They had NEITHER! No emergency equipment or blood. All that was done for her was IV fluids with Steroids which did nothing . I had just moved to Myrtle Beach and I did not know there was an animal hospital right down 17 bypass. If I had known, I would have taken her there. That vet should have told me to take her there for at least a chance to live. I left her with that vet praying she would survive. The next morning Dr. Paul called to tell me my Cassie had passed during the night. All alone probably striving to breathe. I went straight to the vet's office and held my Cassie saying goodbye to her. That I loved her so much. Finally when I was composed enough, I gave her back to staff. Then I was promptly given a bill for 800 dollars. In my opinion, they let her die! I will never forgive them. All they cared about was the money! Our first animal hospital we visited wasn't so great ( I'm not going to mention any names ), and I really thought I was going to lose my baby there. Being it was a Sunday and on Labor day weekend, there were not a lot of places to seek help. I brought Haiku here in hopes that they would be able to help him and I am so glad that I did!!! From the moment I stepped in, I felt welcomed. The gentleman working at the counter was very patient, kind, and compassionate. He helped and explained everything thoroughly so I understood the process. They worked quickly and got working on Haiku right away. The lobby area is kept very clean and organized. They have complimentary snacks and refreshments. There are also rocking chairs outside if you need to take a breather which is what I needed to do a few times. I really appreciated how they were understanding and empathetic about my budget and helped me to get signed up for care credit. They allowed me to spend time with Haiku for a bit before they started testing and treatment. I was so relieved when I seen he had life back in his eyes and I knew this is where he needed to be to get better. Everyone was very nice. They asked questions and listened to what we had to say. You could tell that they actually like pets. My dog was very nervous and stressed and both the Vet and the Vet Tech worked with her. The Vet and the Vet Tech came in to draw blood - which did not leave a spot on her unlike Banfield that made a mess. They ran some tests on my girl and could not find any major problems. She prescribed a medicine for the nausea so my dog could eat. Told us to keep feeding her rice ( add boiled chicken) along with the unflavored water with electrolytes that we were already giving her and eventually incorporate her dry food back in to her diet. They never tried to sell us a bunch of products or give us a bunch of medicines to give the our dog. They were more than patient with us and our girl. They were completely willing to talk with us and make sure that we were at ease. By that night our dog had energy, she was eating and drinking. I will definitely go back! Thank you Dr. Herbers! The office that did his surgery didn't have a vet on call, and I was worried that he wasn't going to survive if I waited overnight, so I contacted his former (retired) vet. He suggested this hospital and suggested that I take him immediately given what I had told him. It was a little after midnight when we arrived. They were very nice to us. The vet could tell how distraught and upset I was and how worried I was about having to leave him, but he needed IVs. She assured me someone would be in the room monitoring him all night. He was there for 20 hours under observation and they called me at work a couple times the next morning to give me updates and let me know that he was better and was charming all the nurses. I picked him up later that evening, and he was so much better. The vet and techs were very professional and very nice to us and provided me with a plan to get him completely back to normal over the next week. The visit was expensive, but I knew it would be since we went in at midnight and he had to be under observation. It was absolutely worth it. They called to check on him. When we returned to his normal vet to have his stitches out, the vet didn't even seem to care what he had been through. I cut ties with them that day and found another vet, but I'm happy to know this hospital is there if I ever need care for one of my boys during off hours. They saved my little boy, and I will be forever grateful for that. This actually happened a year ago, but it just showed up in my calendar today, so I felt compelled to share my experience.

Later, we brought our cat in for a regular checkup for an illness about two months later and they were super helpful and didn't push treatments that weren't absolutely necessary. There were pets with more serious issues so we didn't expect to be seen immediately. We were talked to by 2 females & 1 male-assumed they were all vet techs but have no idea. We're told they would probably do an ultrasound-fine. Was then told the Dr said to do an X-ray & we're told the price. We aren't doctors, we did what we were told & $500+ later at 10:39, with no one in the lobby, I asked what the X-ray results were. No stones/crystals. What should have been done was a test of his urine for a UTI-I asked for that before the X-ray but it was never addressed until AFTER the overpriced X-ray. We went to our animal hospital Sept. 2 when the problems returned & he had an ultrasound, urine rest & was put on meds for a UTI. The other thing that was happened while we're were there from 5pm -10:39 was a foster Bischon who was in labor, one puppy born dead, one had to be euthanized & one that she had trouble delivering because of its size but was also dead. That pitiful dog whined in extreme pain the ENTIRE TIME WE WERE THERE! Again, I'm no vet, but there was no reason to delay a c-section & spare that dog the pain she was in! DO NOT GO TO THIS FACILITY UNLESS YOU HAVE NO OTHER CHOICE - I'd drive to SC before I'd go back there.
