Classic Calgary sculptures and lots more art on display at Foothills.

January 3rd of this year my family received a phone call to go and wait at the Foothills Hospital as a kidney might becoming available for my Dad. He was entering his 8th year of being on hemo-dialysis. In the early hours of January 5th he received a kidney transplant at this location. This hospital performs kidney, pancreas, skin, heart and lung transplants (liver are done in Edmonton). Due to issues involving immune suppression & rejection a standard of extreme cleanliness is required. This was met! The Doctor's and Nurses were extraordinary. Hard-working, kind, competent and patient. There is a lot of information the family needs to absorb in a short amount of time (while tired) and the staff was friendly and accommodating. The food was what you would expect from a mass-serving situation but better than other hospitals we have experienced. Visiting family: There is a pharmacy, cafe, gift shop available on the main floor of the Tom Baker Building. If your "person" is in for long, it makes financial sense to bring your own drinks and snacks. It is like a small city and can be confusing to get around initially. Calgarians are friendly and will gladly help if you ask to be pointed in the right direction. I am taking one star off for two reasons: 1) The bathrooms inside the patient's rooms could be kept a little cleaner. 2) A conversation overheard next to us - where a social worker treated a man who had recently moved to Calgary and had a heart attack - very rudely. I regret not speaking up at the time on his behalf. I have accompanied my Dad to this hospital for transplant purposes, dialysis, check-ups, ER visits...and think highly of it. It has literally saved his life twice and the Transplant Team are living Hero's. Calgary should sleep safer knowing health care like this is available.

Medical care is great, food is the complete opposite.

I had the "privilege" to spend almost 5 days in the hospital waiting for a surgery after an accident. To sum it up: - The technical amenities and equipment was exceptional - The experience with the first emergency care was overall positive. Definitely could be faster, but considering how crippled I was, there was no where to rush - once I was placed to the room, I was pleased and surprised by the care I was given by the nurses night shift. They were so amazing! Thank you for making the stay in the hospital so pleasant for me! - waiting time for the surgery was frustrating, however the result was great and the surgeon was super experienced and nice person. - I left the hospital next day after I faked that I have no pain and did my best to perform some tricks with the crutches - what was absolutely terrible was the food. I assume they provide such a shi**y food to make you get out from the hospital soon. Which is an ok strategy I guess. However, I was surprised how unhealthy the food provided in the hospital can be. - last think to mention - pills and pain killers. I couldn't understand the amount of pain killers served to everyone. Either they got some kickback from the Tylenol distributor or they just wan't to drug you so you don't feel pain and get out from the Hospital soon. I took less than half of them but still could easily consider myself a crackhead knowing the amount of Acetaminophen I got into my system... Overall I am very thankful for the care and help. Really shocked to realize how some patients act and behave when the nurses are trying to help them. Shame on you grumpy complainers and hypochondriacs (of all ages).

We are extremely fortunate to have such a top notch hospital in Calgary. Even though I am a relatively healthy individual, I had a tough run-in with my health in 2005, which had me in the Foothills hospital for 11 days. Yep. 11 days. (no ooo`s and ahh`s. I am FINE now. :) However, I do speak from experience when I say that the doctors and nurses in that facility that I dealt with, genuinely cared about my well being. I was often informed what was happening, and never had to track someone down to find out what was next. Quite frankly, whatever was next, was generally, `proactivelly` happening to me. lol! Also, during my 11 day stay, I had a lot of problems, but luckely, none of them were around my stomach. Like a true ukranian girl, my run of being sick did not affect my appetite, so I mostly waited for breakfast, lunch and dinner. What I didn't expect, was that every morning, I got a little checklist, where I could choose what I wanted to eat based on what they had available. I wouldn't have expected that in a million years! I'm not saying that the meals that came were fancy by any sort, but considering where I was, they were good! Whoever was preparing them cared enough to add some flavor. The staff were amazing. Between the care I received and the fact that the meals were palatable, I am quite impressed with this facility.

    Kicking Crab and Corn Chowder

I am reviewing the "Kicking Crab and Corn Chowder" which was one of the two soups of the day today. And oh boy! Whattasoup! I enjoyed every spoonful of this yellowy, creamy, deliciousy tangy spectacle-in -styrofoam! So much so that I only remembered to photograph it after eating a chunk or two, and finished the whole lot before I could crumble my saltines. Whilst the kicking was there like a distant struggle, I poured in a packet of Louisiana Hot Sauce to take it up a notch - that did the trick! $3.95 for a bowlful. Worth it. Especially if they get bigger bowls. UPDATE 07/22/18 - Bigger bowls now available!!

When I i was my turn to face the nurse at the triage and taking my information she decided to take a long phone call. Very unprofessional. Normally I am a very patient person but I wanted to passed out. So I told heR I can't breathe and I need help. That was the only time she put the phone down. They took me in and let me say down for 30 min while I was struggling to breathe. Finally the RT came to help me with different puffs that didn't seem to work on my condition. But she was compassionate and kind. I was moved to a bed. The young nurse was kind. Another RT respiratory therapist came. Reason I am giving this hospital a star at all was for the RT. After 3 hours with no improvement on my lung funCtion but because my "vitals " were normal Dr Allison Foran insisted on discharging me for the reason that my vitals were normal. Nobody even counted my Respiratory rate since I came in. I was in moderate respiratory distress and she thinks the computer vitals is good enough to discharge me with my wheezing audible without using a stethoscope. I am a doctor too in my country. And we do not let a patient go with wheezes who can crash on his way out of our hospital . The only person who waNted me to stay was the respiratory therapist. Dr Foran you better review your books again and use your better judgement. You have a long way to go and patient care lives in the heart. Being a doctor is a privilege to help because you know better. It is not an authority to use because your protocol says so. I have Not slept because my wheezes has not stopped but I am better at home than there when I know my doctor does not care but to empty a bed. When I come back I am pretty sure I will request for another doctor. Your nurses need to know why they serve too. Nobody even gave me a blanket and I was shivering. I was moved from a bed to a corner where no one can see me. We are all in the hEalth profession because we love people to get better and to offer hope. You are all young and already yOu all work Like you are aBout to retire. If you do not change your attitudes then you are alL in the wrong profession : you can all learn from the Reapiratory teaM.

My dentist calls me every 4 months for a cleaning or checkup. When was the last time I had a blood test.?... 10 years! I know many have adequate medical care through established family practices via standard health care, but some don't. I did not. I think I knew something was not right and when I couldn't arrange a standard medical exam through my MD (after 1 year of trying and two misconnects) then I signed up for Copeman. After the intake questions and battery of exams and tests, it was found that essentially everything was off the charts. I was actually in pretty bad shape. Fortunately things were found early enough, I received some expert advice, and was able to get some lifestyle choices turned around before it was too late. The actual facility is centrally located, has easy off-street parking with nice (modern and clean!) offices and waiting room. There are nutritionists, physiotherapists, exercise kinesiologists, nurses, lab staff and counsellors available, but most importantly, physicians who actually take their hand off of the door handle when they talk to you. For lab tests, samples are all taken on site. This is the way health care should be. It is not luxurious, unless you compare it to the standard squalid waiting rooms at physicians' offices, usually located in dilapidated medical buildings with antique furnishings and equipment from the 60s. How we have come to accept the current state as acceptable is bewildering to me. While I feel a twinge of liberal guilt about the whole thing, this is a complicated issue with no easy answers. I was not willing to die waiting for politicians and government to figure it out. At $4K/ first year and $2.5K/year following (there are also family plans), it is certainly not for everyone. I am a supporter, and while this kind of service is not the answer to our current delivery problems, it just might be part of the solution.
