Cecil H Green Library - David Rumsey Map Center - a bit hard to find!

My friend and I stopped here while visiting Stanford. You have to sign in and give them a bunch of…read moreyour information, take a photo, and get a guest badge. This place has better security than many companies around the area The library is nice. We enjoyed sitting in the reading rooms and doing some work. If I were a student here I would probably come here sometimes to do some deep studying.

Earlier today while I was studying for my finals, I noticed a man staring into my cubicle, which…read moremade me quite uncomfortable. He then came around the corner to stare at me and my work before telling me that I was not allowed to have food in the library. This person did not say hi or excuse me, just began to berate me to make sure I knew he had the power. I did not know the food policy as I am a first-year student and do not go to the green library often. I normally go to the East Asia Library and this is not an issue there. I responded with "okay," he then preceded to repeat over and over again that I couldn't have food, saying "Stanford policy states...." He also said, "you know, this isn't a restaurant." I was understanding at this point, but I began to get frustrated as he was aggressively repeating that I couldn't have food. I was only drinking an energy drink at the time to get me through the day, but I still understood to an extent. He then told me I had to throw it away, which I did, but he continued to stare at me. Additionally, the food cost me $20, so if he had asked me to put it in my backpack, I would have been more than happy to oblige. If he had approached me in a nicer way, I would have been more than happy to put the food away and then I know to never bring food in again. I currently pay for my own tuition and food here, so as a student working minimum wage, I cannot afford to just "throw it away," but this person did not seem to care. If he works at a University library, he should know how to talk to students without being belligerent and patronizing. Because of this instance, I am never going to go into green library again, I'd prefer the East Asia Library because the people there are much friendlier. This person was a smaller man with glasses and was working at around 4 pm 3/18. I have never been more humiliated and looked down upon in my life. The same thing happened to my roommate after she told him she would put the drink away in her bag, but he was rude to her as well. I think green library needs to rethink who you hire and how the workers treat students.

I like this library because it is secluded, cozy, and relaxing. Unlike the bigger libraries this…read moreplace is usually not very crowded - and there is a little park next to it for some casual strolls. Yes the staff tend to talk amongst each other at regular voice levels and while that could be a negative to me it just feeds into to the friendly and laid back ambiance of the place. It is not as if they are screaming and shouting at each other. The one thing I don't like is that the wifi connectivity is spotty from time to time. So if I am not here to study or read then it may be problematic - ie may have to go to a cafe to do surfing.

This is a small library that maintains a good balance of popular content - like DVD's, and…read moreessential books. I think it's basically just okay, for the following reasons: Pluses: + it's a small library, tiny, so if you want that studying at coffee shop feeling, it might get you there. + it's located next to a small park in the quiet residential area of Palo Alto close to shops, etc. So, it's convenient if you're in the area for whatever. + it can be quiet depending on the time of the day. Minuses: - it can be loud depending on the time of the day (think after school, parents walking in with obnoxious kids and both mom and kid chattering away). - it's a tiny space ... just a few desks, not much privacy, not the type of place to park and get some serious studying done. - furniture/furnishings are pretty old ... it's a vintage library.
