There's one employee who usually works the first register when walking in the store 15 items or less lane, who always thinks people are trying to steal. If you buy pop she counts them several times. Today I went to food for less, I spotted a digital sale, as a senior citizen, I had no idea how to load my phone on the app (etc) so I asked a young gentleman employee Xavier to help me. He politely, respectfully helped me. I was quite impressed by his service. He didn't roll his eyes, didn't have a better then you attitude, he had manners and respect for the customer he was helping, he was helping me for a least 15 minutes and I'm sure he probably had other work to do. He is an asset to the company and too bad more young/ older employees can't take his example of good customer service. read more

This is my first visit. F4L offers a pretty nice selection of meat, seafood, produce, grocery and personal items. The gentleman who worked the butcher counter was courteous, kind, and patient. Wonderful person! I bought salmon and ribeye steaks. I was amazed at the size of the counter and the offering. You could purchase chicken, beef hearts (my Discus fish love beef heart), pork steaks, chops, bacon, roasts, crab legs, Tilapia, shrimp, etc. The produce section also offers a large selection of fruits and vegetables. At the checkout line, Miss Barb checked me and my Mom out. She was so nice! Wow, it was refreshing to receive service with a smile and pleasant attitude. I have been going to the Food4Less store in Chicago Heights, IL since the store opened. Rock bottom prices especially if you purchase the Kroger brand which are quite extensive at Food4Less. I revisited the store on a Friday night after work; I think it was the end of a busy day. I usually shop there on Saturday mornings and next time I will do so. My cashier was Tiffany H. who was very friendly and got me out of the store in record time. NOTE: full information about recalls are included on sales slips. Food 4 Less is one of few options for a quick grocery trip when you come this far south. Sure, Walmart is the new competition across the street but I prefer to avoid the crowds whenever possible. The selection is there and do are the prices which is why they won't be going anywhere anytime soon even with Walmart. Quality with produce is also good but organization couple be much better. Overall, it's worth the consideration when it comes to being budget friendly and having unique choices Walmart simply doesn't have. read more

It's no wonder they put Jewel out of business across the street. Food4Less is Kroger, FYI, and for those "special" readers who are challenged in the discipline of reading between the lines, it is a discount store. Don't expect organic stuff and granite countertops in the bathroom. Do expect stupid awesome prices on most products and a great selection. Deli meat that goes for $4-$5 per HALF pound at other stores goes for $4-$5 per FULL pound here - brands like Butterball, Sara Lee, etc. Milk is usually about $2-$2.50/gallon (at the time of writing, it's like $4 most other places). The butcher section has a decent array of beef and pork, but not a ton of chicken. If you've ever been an employee (or especially an employER), you know it costs a lot to have an employee, so this is why you get cheap milk: No baggers. You press the button, the belt moves, it's kind of fun, and if you're lucky enough to use the last bag in the bunch you get to keep the little nub that's left over and play with it in the car. Ok.. Just moved to Sauk village and tried out a few other grocery stores and I don't know if I can give the names but I will tell you the prices were high.. Finally went to food for less and the store is clean,big,friendly and helpful workers and the prices are low.. I particularly like the 10 for $10.00 deals and you don't have to buy 10 you can buy 1 or as many as you want and still only pay $1.00.. read more

Since we lost Jewel and Dominics on Lincoln Highway, I find myself coming to Food 4 Less more and more. Great value on sale items and clean store. Love the fact they have Kroger items - a taste of my hometown (Bourbonnais)up here. I have to add that my experience yesterday was less than stellar. My cashier Chris was throwing my groceries on the belt which resulted in alot of smashed items. He told me I needed to get the items bagged to avoid that happening. He was upset with the customer before me due to a language barrier and having an issue with a upc code not being read. He carried that fustration over to me. Because I like this store I will give it one chance to redeem itself. read more

Moldy bread twice! Never enough cashiers which I need because I am disabled. I won't be going back there. I will go to Aldi and Walmart which is one block away. Also to Sav-A-Lot . It is a drive for me but much better prices. read more

As background we usually shop at Olympia Fields Jewel and the Chicago Heights ULTRA. Military privilages allow us to stock up periodically at Great Lakes at big savings but that's only every few months. I've shopped Food4Less before (usually coming out disappointed) but with Jewel about to close I thought I'd go in with a short list and see how they might fit in to our buying patterns. Our premium store will become Dominicks in Matteson but maybe there is a role for Food4Less too. Let me get right to my conclusion. No it will not. HUGE waste of time coming here. I still had to go next door to Ultra and that was only with a short list. Here are a few reasons. My list required two whole chickens, one larger, one smaller for soup. They had one kind. I picked up one but had to go next door for the other. I needed a nice roast beef. They had two out and neither was suitable. I have no interest in waiting for something to be cut for me. I wanted lemon juice. I know it's in there somewhere but none the aisle marked juices. Come to think of it other than apple juice there was no juice there at all, just juice-based drinks. Checkout girl said it was in some other aisle. I don't have time to hunt down their strange ideas of where to put things so that was a skip. Tostitos Salsa--no they don't carry it. Had to take another brand Pillsbury Sweet Rolls -- regular type, 5-pack. Don't carry it. Another skip. Bottom line, a big waste of time. I don't care if they undercut Ultra on a few items so they can advertise. It's already going to more trouble than it's worth to go to a discounter in addition to the full price store. Usually I shop at food 4 less in the city, but if I know I will be in Chicago heights, I prefer this one. Their full deli doesn't exist at the one by my house. They are also cleaner as well. And price wise, there's no comparison between here and jewel. read more

Much prices than Jewel. Also a better quality of produce section, which is a major plus for me. Nice big aisles. I can't even turn a corner in Jewel on a slow day. I like bagging my own groceries. This place is the most reminiscent of my Winco store back on the west coast. Just need to find a store with a bulk section and I'll be set. A latte stand inside would be too much to ask... :) So far this grocery store is where I will prefer to shop even though a half dozen are closer. Produce is always fresh and tasty. They have good sales weekly and a decent meat and ethnic food selection. Get their shoppers card for digital coupons because they offer really good savings on top of the sales prices. read more

September 4, 2012, I recently shopped at Food4Less in Chicago Heights, IL this Labor Day Weekend. This is a relatively new store to the area. When it first opened, I was impressed with the prices and quality of food. I decided that this would be my new grocery store home. I used to shop at the other Food4Less in Oak Forest, but the quality of food has diminished. This Labor Day weekend, as I filled my cart with fresh produce and meat for my upcoming cookout, I hurriedly packed my cart with a variety of items. While standing in the check-out lane, I noticed a faint foul smell. Since I had put what I thought was fresh meat (2 slabs of pork ribs), (3 lbs of hamburger) and (3 lbs of chicken) in my cart, I could not determine which item the smell was coming from. So, I asked the checkout clerk to smell the meat and she stated she could not smell anything due to a cold, but she called over another co-worker, and he stated the meat smelled "fine" to him. A customer in the next lane overheard me asking around if anyone smelled any foul odors coming from my cart, and she volunteered to smell each item. Once she sniffed the ribs, she stated "Oh God, this smells horrible, why would that person say he could not smell anything. You should not purchase the ribs they are spoiled." After that comment, I gave the slabs of ribs back and the checkout clerk then stated she did smell a bad odor, now, even with her sinus problems. She then refunded the money for that item. I then hesitated to put everything back, but I did not. The other shopper then commented now she is wondering whether to put everything back as well, but we didn't. In the southern suburbs, there are not a variety of grocery stores in the area. The community always has to go out of their area of comfort to shop for decent food and fresh produce to feed their families. We should not be subjected to inferior food and old produce. Our property taxes are just as high if not higher than some of the northern and western suburbs, and our families are equally important. In conclusion, before I start shopping out of the area again, I am filing a complaint, and hopefully this will not go to deaf ears. Hopefully the new Food4Less, will not mean Food with Less quality. I agree with the commentator that wrote about the lack of selections at this store. I do shop there from the sale ad. I went there when it first opened and immediately noticed that the selection of many items was lacking. Some were only in large sizes when i know that there were smaller sizes available in other stores. I think Ultra is better and the prices aren't so much different. If I can get what I need at Aldi's I shop there also. BTW, they still haven't opened a gas station on that corner yet. Their prices aren't really better, but my main objection to shopping there is the lack of brands and sizes of items. read more

With the closing of the Jewel at rt 30 & Western, I've become a regular shopper at Food4Less and I am very happy. I never have a problem finding anything I need, the lemon juice, btw, is in the juices aisle, at the front, on the top, with lime juice. The produce is great, they have the basics plus a lot of ethnic options. They don't have a huge organic selection, but I'm not really interested in paying higher prices for hype-veggies. Plenty of ethnic foods in the aisles, too. The store is always clean, bright, well stocked and I find the employees to be friendly and helpful. The meat department is great, they even have coarse-ground beef that is great for chili. Can't get that at Jewel or Dominicks. The prices are great, for instance, an 8 oz package of shredded house brand (Kroger) cheese costs half what it does at Jewel. They will soon have a Food4Less gas station, and have started signing up people for their gas card. Shop for food and get a gas discount? Sounds like a good plan to me. read more

I quit shopping at Food 4 Less. Twice I purchased bread that had mold in the middle of the loaf. Also, they had a sale on 10 pound bags of grapefruit. They were all dry in the middle. Also, their milk is high. I purchase milk for under $2.00 at Aldi and Save A Lot which are the stores I go to now. I know how to buy bread. I have known for years by the twist ties. The codes are as follows: Blue - Monday, Green - Tuesday, Red - Thursday, White - Friday and Saturday is Yellow. No deliveries on Sunday and Wednesday. I also live one block south of Food 4 Less. That should tell you how much I do not want to go there. read more

Average store just be prepared to wait A LONG time in line. At least 3 times longer than the one Oak Forest.

This place is nowhere to be if you want your food places in sanitary conditions. their slicers are always broken so who knows how many people have sliced their fingers. it takes forever to get in and out of there. the cashiers are rude. oh and their garbage for late night is kept in the meat cooler so they dont have to go outside at night. gross! read more

I am a mystery shopper for Food 4 Less. Most stores have them. You can join online. I went to Food 4 Less on assignment. I have to check many aspects of the store. Things like the deli, the donuts, the produce, the labeling, the signage, the meat section, etc. Also customer service. That bring me to the story I will tell you. I will never shop there for myself. Only when I get paid to do so. I performed my duties and the store was mediocre at best. When it was time to check out, there was only one cashier open. I waited a long time which I knew I had to time on my watch and report it. However, when it came to me, the register broke down 3 times. After the 3rd time, I told them just to charge me for what was scanned and I had another appointment to go to. The cashier said no, we will get it fixed. I said no, i need to leave now. It became apparent that I had to leave and I started to walk out. She called the security guard on me. I had a doctor's appointment to keep and no way am I going to miss that. The security guard tried to get me to stay and I told him that if he tried to press the issue there would be severe ramifications. Like most security guards he did not like those words and that is when I pulled out my letter from Kroger stating that I had a right to be there to perform a mystery shop. He then let me go. Unfortunately, I could not mention this in my online report because part of the assignment is to make a purchase but I walked out. I went back the next day and I used my cell phone camera and took pictures of everything that was wrong, especially the lack of pricing on items. This store is the worse store for customer service that I ever encountered. I am a silver certificate mystery shopper and have been since 2005. This is my job and my field of expertise. I made my online report and made sure that I could back up everything I said with the pictures. You can upload them into your report. I will not shop there for myself. They have to pay me to shop there. Worse store ever. read more

The low prices does not begin to make up for the rodent problem. Mice and droppings can be seen in broad daylight. On the shelves, particularly behind the bread and dried foods. A friend bought a pie that had droppings inside the package. This place is infested and it is being hidden from the public. read more
