The Leaning Tower of Pisa is one of those things you've seen photos of a million times, so you think you know what to expect but in person it's a bit weirder. The tilt kind of throws you off for a second. The detail on it is what got me more than anything -- was the pole in the middle of the inside for stability. It's not just a place to take a photo and leave but actually walk around the square and grounds and take it all in. Climbing it is a bit tight and a little uneven, but nothing crazy. You do feel the lean as you go and the view is solid is full of open space. A lot of people do the cliché photos, including myself, but it's part of the fun of it all. Overall, it was definitely worth it but not somewhere you need to spend the night, as it over-delivers within the confines of a day trip.

It is one of six buildings that you can visit as part of the Square of Pisa. You do need a ticket to enter, costing 7€ separately, but included as part of a 10€ package for the other museums (not the Tower) I love how the museum is structured, with 4 total stories (all accessible via elevator), but of different floor space, to allow fresco of different sizes to be displayed. For example the bottom floor housed frescos that took up more than one floor. You can walk through the entire floor space pretty fast if you peruse, but many of the frescos have interesting write-ups next to them, that you can use to study them. There was a nice 3-d rendition of the campus here as well. We spent about 30 minutes here.

Alex and I took about an hour or so because we examined some of the frescoes closely, but if you just browse about, you can be done in under an hour. All these museums are included with your purchased ticket to go into the tower. If you buy online that is. I am not sure how it works if you are to get your tickets while you are there. As far as museums go, after you've been to so many amazing ones in the larger cities, this one doesn't seem to be all that great, but it is still worth seeing it, there is always something interesting to learn. Also some of the paintings and drawings in the upper levels are great.

We only had about 4 hours in Pisa before we had to head back to our train, so we made our way directly toward the Piazza dei Miracoli - and it was awe inspiring! Such beauty and history to explore, in the Tower, Cathedral, the Baptistery, etc. Do not stick only to the Tower (and don't do the touristy photo op of "holding the tower up") I highly recommend going into the Cathedral and taking a walk around the inside. Beautiful artwork and architecture inside there. If you aren't able to climb the Campanile (leaning tower) - physically unable to, fear of heights, not enough time, etc - I still recommend this stop in Pisa. The Tower is beautiful from the outside too, if you aren't able to go inside/up, and the other buildings of the Piazza are worth the trip by themselves! One tip: you cannot see the Leaning Tower or any other of the Piazza dei Miracoli buildings by driving by or standing outside on the street. You have to go through a small marketplace of vendors to get to the archway entry. Once inside the entryway, that is where you will see the buildings you are looking for. Have fun!

By the time we got to the Leaning Tower of Pisa we didn't have enough time to partake in the timed tickets to go to the top of the tower so we decided to wander around the area. This botanical garden wasn't too far away by foot. The ladies selling tickets were friendly and it wasn't too expensive compared to other more popular tourist attraction entrance fees. There were an abundance of different types of plants and indoor exhibits to keep us occupied. I also liked how I could see workers putting bird safe stickers on the greenhouse glass so our avian friends wouldn't crash into it. The restrooms were conveniently located and clean. Another side note, really glad we could hold our luggage at the train station so we could enjoy a nice little day trip in Pisa without having to worry about constantly lugging our carry on with us.

The outdoor square is accessible to the public, and you can take outside pictures for free (e.g. if you just want to take a picture with you "holding up" the Tower, that can be done with no ticket). If you want to head inside many of the buildings, you can buy tickets at the official site (https://www.opapisa.it/en). Because there was no special exhibit happening during January 2024 (which is definitely the low season for this part of the world), there were six permanent buildings that you can enter: 1. Tower 2. Baptistery 3. Camposanto 4. Cathedral 5. Opera Del Duomo Museum 6. Sinopie Museum. For 2024, prices are 27€ each for the entire experience. Separately, it is 20€ for just the tower, 10€ for everything else. Or a la carte, 7€ each (except the Cathedral which is free, but still requires a complementary ticket acquired at the ticket office the day of). We got the entire experience, and that definitely is the way to go if you intend to stay for a 1/2 day visit. The Tower opens at 9, and the others soon after. It was very sparse at that time, but definitely got busier by lunchtime. But even then, there were hardly any lines anywhere. And because it was a Sunday, Roman Catholic masses were occurring throughout the morning and early afternoon, which you can attend. Definitely would recommend spending 1/2 of a day here, and soaking up the history.
