During WWII, US military heard that Germans were setting up a scouting post on top of a church campanile, so they sent a field sergeant to investigate and mark for artillery. However, when the sergeant arrived at the potential enemy post, he was surprised not by enemy presence but by the unparalleled beauty in front of him. He then returned and convinced the military not to strike this beauty, whether a scouting post existed or not.
The sight that charmed the sergeant was Piazza dei Miracoli - Pisa's cathedral complex, and this place is unlike any even in the country full of marvels! Unlike other city's cathedrals, the then-powerful Pisa intentionally built hers outside the city walls in the middle of the nowhere like a taunt to the world that no one would dare to approach even the Pisan wall. The effect was an unique phenomenon of remarkably beautiful monuments of white marble emerging from a green field - like a miracle!
Of course, this is also the location of Italy's most iconic structure, the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
But aside from taking a classic "lean-on-tower" photo, take some time to admire beautiful monuments, inside and outside, Consider stepping inside Battistero di San Giovanni (Italy's largest baptistery) or the grand Camposanto cemetery for a small fee, but definitely walk inside the stunning Duomo (https://www.yelp.com/biz/cattedrale-di-santa-maria-assunta-pisa?hrid=5H3aFZJ6_CEm88HnRe_T0A) because it's beautiful and free! As the centerpiece of Piazza dei Miracoli, the cathedral was built as an answer to Basilica di San Marco in Venezia, Pisa's maritime rival then, and you should be the judge of this competition for yourself!
If the weather is good though, don't hesitate in joining many on a nice picnic on the green meadow of Piazza dei Miracoli! How often can you eat with the backdrop of the Leaning Tower?
This is the only remarkable sight in Pisa so you may need to go out of your way, but if you have time or are in Firenze and the Tuscany area, Piazza dei Miracoli is worth a detour! Aside from checking off the Leaning Tower from your bucket list, seeing this truly miraculous sight in person is certainly an experience to be had.

ADMISSION:
The admission to the cathedral is free, whether you purchase admission to other sights in the Piazza or not. All you need is to get a "timed ticket" at the ticket counter in the building south of the Baptistery. This is also where you buy tickets to enter other monuments including the Leaning Tower.

HOW TO REACH PIAZZA DEI MIRACOLI
The easiest train station to reach is Pisa Centrale, although the smaller Pisa S Rossore is only a 5-minute walk away from the Piazza. Centrale may be better because more and faster trains pass through it.
From Roma, you can directly connect to Centrale via a 2.5-hour Frecciabianca ride.
From Firenze, you can directly connect to Centrale via a 1-hr "Regionale Veloce" (1.5 on regular Regionale) ride.
From Pisa Centrale, you can choose to 1) walk 20 minutes or 2) take the 10-minute LAM Rossa bus. I recommend taking the bus because the fare is only €1 with a 4-ticket carnet from any newsstand and the rest of Pisa is dull, but beware of the pickpockets.
Since you have to transfer at Pisa Centrale for Cinque Terre (unless you are directly going to La Spezia from Roma), why not make a Leaning Tower stopover?
