These church grounds were on our way from Florance to Santa Margherita via train so we had the chance to stop in Pisa. While everyone goes to see the leaning tower, the church is quite stunning. Not a lot to see on the walk from the train station to the church, but when you get to the area of the church, it's quite beautiful. They hand out 'free passes' to enter the church, but it's only so many each hour and we didn't have enough time to wait until the next available pass. It was about a two hour wait. Not sure if that is typical or not. We were able to walk around the outside of the church. Beautiful white marble and architectural highlights greet you from all sides. I loved the carvings on the huge doors. The grassy areas welcome families and friends to gather and relax to enjoy the beauty.

Pisa isn't just about the Leaning Tower. Most people have heard of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, but most people have no idea of the context of the tower. It is actually just the bell tower for the Pisa Cathedral. The entire cathedral complex is as impressive as the tower. Like most Italian cities there is also a Duomo (Cathedral) and Piazza del Duomo. The Piazza del Duomo, Pisa, is a square that contains four artistically important medieval monuments. They were constructed between the 11th and 14th centuries. The Cathedral (Duomo): If you're not all cathedral-ed out (it can happen pretty quickly in Europe), the Duomo is substantial and stunning - it was the biggest in Europe at the time when it was built. Entry into the Cathedral is free. The Baptistry (the circular building): As well as being very photogenic from the outside, stand inside and you'll stand in the place where Galileo Galilei was baptized. The campanile (the 'Leaning Tower') - already described in my other review The walled cemetery Campo Santo with its frescoes The Piazza del Duomo in Pisa is one of Italy's UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It is located in Pisa within the province of Tuscany and was inscribed in 1987. It is also known as Piazza dei Miracoli or Piazza of Miracles.

The Piazza dei Miracoli is located in Pisa Italy. Pisa can be reached by train, bus or automobile. The train ride from Florence is about a hour long. Once you are dropped off in Pisa it is about a 40 walk to the Field of Miracles. Passing through part of the city as you walk is an exceptional exceptiona The Piazza dei Miricoli was coined by the Italian writer and poet Gabriele d'Annunzio. It is believed that soil from the fields at Calvary was brought to this site in Pisa during the Fourth Crusade. The piazza is owned by the Cathoiic Church. Tickets can be purchased in a building just south of the Baptistery. The tickets will have a timed entry. Climbing to the top of the Leaning Tower will cost 18 Euros, entering the Baptistry, cemetery and two museums will cost and additional 9 Euros. Access to the Cathedral of Pisa is free. I skipped the tower but thought the Baptistery and two museums were an exceptional value. Children under 8 years are not permitted and when you buy your tickets online or at the site, you are assigned a 30 minute time slot. Do not be a minute late for your climb. Once at the top you will notice that some rails are in need of repair. There are many open air market vendors and cafes which line the site. Yes, there are Dolce and Gabbana and Gucci knockoff.sepair, The Piazza dei Miracoli is comprised of the Pisa Cathedral (Doumo) 1064, the Baptistery which started construction in 12th century and it is where Galileo Galile was baptized, the Campanielle (Leaning Tower of Pisa which began to lean 5 years after construction began and has 297 spiral steps, the Camposanto Monumentale (cemetery which was completed in 1464, the di Santo Spirito which was built in 1257 and housed the sick, poor and. abandoned children of the time and the Palazzo dell'Opera is a complex of houses dating back to the 14th century and continuing to the 19th century. . Children under 8 years are not permitted and when you buy your tickets online or at the site, you are assigned a 30 minute time slot. Do not be a minute late for your climb. Once at the top you will notice that some rails are in need of repair, the containing wall is somewhat low and the tower bell is very loud. Tickets can be purchased in various packages to include the Duomo, Baptistery and other sites in Pisa. During the busy season those 30 minutes slots get booked quickly with tour buses. While you are there see the Duomo, Baptistery (the largest in Italy) and Campo Santo (cemetery). Did you know 53 shiploads of soil from the Hill of Calvery in Jerusalem was brought to The Field of Miracles. There are many open air market vendors and cafes which line the site. Yes, there are Dolce and Gabbana and Gucci knockoffs

A huge central of towers, churches, statues, souvenirs, and other goodies. Just what the doctor ordered. It's pretty massive and connects all the major monuments of Pisa, including the fan favorite, the tower of Pisa. It's hear buddy! This is place you will encounter almost 100% guaranteed if you're visiting Pisa. It's a beauty and well worth the time to explore.

With most iconic buildings you see in travel books, the Leaning Tower of Pisa sits in the Miracle Piazza beside the cathedral and baptistery. With the eye rolling amount of silly selfies (propping it up, kicking it, picking it up... you name it), it probably is one of the most photographed images I know of Italy. I want to give this a perfect score because it can be quite a nice place but the insane amount of tourists just ruins the whole atmosphere. Pisa really centres around the piazza and tourism is probably the main economy. On a early fall day, we experienced 'light volume' of only 20 tour buses first thing in the morning. Thankfully most tours were using headsets but mama mia... the amount of selfie sticks, tourist speed bumps (aka random unaware tourist doing a dead stop in the middle of the walking path to just say "formaggio" to take a selfie of the Tower), and waving umbrellas and tourist signs was insane. It really took away from the entire beauty of it. I don't want to call this place a tourist trap but ... it really did feel like it. You can pay a bit more to go inside the baptistery, cathedral, and tower. I do recommend to take a look inside the baptistery as it does offer a quieter experience and they do have a very cool demonstration on how perfect the acoustics are inside. Once an hour, a gentleman will sing various notes and create an entire chord by himself because the resonance keeps the previous tones. That was pretty cool. I'm not saying avoid this beautiful area of 3 stunning buildings and lovely green space ... just come here knowing you're going to be packed like a nice tin of Italian sardines. And watch out for the pick pockets... tons of that unfortunately.

During WWII, US military heard that Germans were setting up a scouting post on top of a church campanile, so they sent a field sergeant to investigate and mark for artillery. However, when the sergeant arrived at the potential enemy post, he was surprised not by enemy presence but by the unparalleled beauty in front of him. He then returned and convinced the military not to strike this beauty, whether a scouting post existed or not. The sight that charmed the sergeant was Piazza dei Miracoli - Pisa's cathedral complex, and this place is unlike any even in the country full of marvels! Unlike other city's cathedrals, the then-powerful Pisa intentionally built hers outside the city walls in the middle of the nowhere like a taunt to the world that no one would dare to approach even the Pisan wall. The effect was an unique phenomenon of remarkably beautiful monuments of white marble emerging from a green field - like a miracle! Of course, this is also the location of Italy's most iconic structure, the Leaning Tower of Pisa. But aside from taking a classic "lean-on-tower" photo, take some time to admire beautiful monuments, inside and outside, Consider stepping inside Battistero di San Giovanni (Italy's largest baptistery) or the grand Camposanto cemetery for a small fee, but definitely walk inside the stunning Duomo (https://www.yelp.com/biz/cattedrale-di-santa-maria-assunta-pisa?hrid=5H3aFZJ6_CEm88HnRe_T0A) because it's beautiful and free! As the centerpiece of Piazza dei Miracoli, the cathedral was built as an answer to Basilica di San Marco in Venezia, Pisa's maritime rival then, and you should be the judge of this competition for yourself! If the weather is good though, don't hesitate in joining many on a nice picnic on the green meadow of Piazza dei Miracoli! How often can you eat with the backdrop of the Leaning Tower? This is the only remarkable sight in Pisa so you may need to go out of your way, but if you have time or are in Firenze and the Tuscany area, Piazza dei Miracoli is worth a detour! Aside from checking off the Leaning Tower from your bucket list, seeing this truly miraculous sight in person is certainly an experience to be had. --- ADMISSION: The admission to the cathedral is free, whether you purchase admission to other sights in the Piazza or not. All you need is to get a "timed ticket" at the ticket counter in the building south of the Baptistery. This is also where you buy tickets to enter other monuments including the Leaning Tower. --- HOW TO REACH PIAZZA DEI MIRACOLI The easiest train station to reach is Pisa Centrale, although the smaller Pisa S Rossore is only a 5-minute walk away from the Piazza. Centrale may be better because more and faster trains pass through it. From Roma, you can directly connect to Centrale via a 2.5-hour Frecciabianca ride. From Firenze, you can directly connect to Centrale via a 1-hr "Regionale Veloce" (1.5 on regular Regionale) ride. From Pisa Centrale, you can choose to 1) walk 20 minutes or 2) take the 10-minute LAM Rossa bus. I recommend taking the bus because the fare is only €1 with a 4-ticket carnet from any newsstand and the rest of Pisa is dull, but beware of the pickpockets. Since you have to transfer at Pisa Centrale for Cinque Terre (unless you are directly going to La Spezia from Roma), why not make a Leaning Tower stopover? --- tl;dr version: 1) Pisa's cathedral complex, intentionally outside 2) Remarkable beautiful monuments, with one being world-famous 3) Worthy detour if you have the time or are in the area.

The cathedral and baptistry are lovely. The Leaning Tower is interesting, but the Campsanto (cemetery) is worth the visit to the Field of Miracles, and the walk there from the train station will be a delightful journey, worth the walk; don't take public transportation straight to the Field of Miracles; you will miss this adorable town and all it has to offer, including a gorgeous piazza mid-city.

Beautiful grass land with Leaning Tower of Pisa, Cathedral and Battistero di San Giovanni standing side by side. All building shining bright as the stone used snow white and well maintained. The area is well maintained and its just great to relax.

This area was declared a UNESCO Patrimony of the Humanity for the whole area. The outdoor square is accessible to the public, and you can take outside pictures for free (e.g. if you just want to take a picture with you "holding up" the Tower, that can be done with no ticket). If you want to head inside many of the buildings, you can buy tickets at the official site (https://www.opapisa.it/en). Because there was no special exhibit happening during January 2024 (which is definitely the low season for this part of the world), there were six permanent buildings that you can enter: 1. Tower 2. Baptistery 3. Camposanto 4. Cathedral 5. Opera Del Duomo Museum 6. Sinopie Museum. For 2024, prices are 27€ each for the entire experience. Separately, it is 20€ for just the tower, 10€ for everything else. Or a la carte, 7€ each (except the Cathedral which is free, but still requires a complementary ticket acquired at the ticket office the day of). We got the entire experience, and that definitely is the way to go if you intend to stay for a 1/2 day visit. The Tower opens at 9, and the others soon after. It was very sparse at that time, but definitely got busier by lunchtime. But even then, there were hardly any lines anywhere. And because it was a Sunday, Roman Catholic masses were occurring throughout the morning and early afternoon, which you can attend. Definitely would recommend spending 1/2 of a day here, and soaking up the history.
