If CCPL doesn't have the book you want, they can get it for you and to the branch most convenient to you. Besides that, the library is a fun 'third place' to be away from home or work, and everything is free (minus printing, which is super cheap). The library is very busy with students after school hours. If you want a very quiet environment, come during the school day or later in the evening (after 6:00 PM). I am so glad to have this branch close to home.

I lived in Charleston for ten years before visiting the Main library. Three other libraries are…read morecloser to my home, and with ILL and transfer between branches, I can read any book I want without having to travel downtown to pick it up. This library is massive and reminds me of the library at my state university (years ago), while the other libraries in the system are more like "neighborhood" branches. This may be the flagship library, but every branch is impressive. Another fun fact is that the Main Library branch serves as an early voting location during election season. Ballots and books are two of my favorite things, and I'm glad the library does its part to serve democracy. I thought I'd have to drive around for a parking spot or park in a nearby garage. Not true- there's parking on the ground level, your first hour is free, and it's super easy to get in and out. The Main library is also open on Sundays from 2-5 PM, and it's the only branch with Sunday hours. Since Sunday isn't as busy downtown, it's a great time to explore this branch.

Before the pandemic, there used to be a table that had a community jigsaw puzzle which was fun to contribute to. Years ago they had teen programs and craft nights and the summer reading programs gave me something to look forward to as a kid. Also before the pandemic they had events like "color your stress away" where adults could meet up, color, and converse with each other which was neat. There's seating areas and private rooms to fit your needs whether it's to get work done or have a quiet study group.

The Johns Island library has a community room as well as dedicated teen and children's areas for those programs. As an adult, I'm sort of jealous that we didn't have such cool teen/kids rooms in the library when I was younger. Johns Island as a whole doesn't have a lot for younger kids, so the library is great for them. Like other branches, you can reserve books online then walk in to check them out, use the self-checkout machines, and obtain resources from other libraries through interlibrary loan. CCPL also has tons of online features too, including audiobooks and eBooks. You can also read newspapers like the New York Times for free with your library subscription. If you don't already have a library card, become a member and visit the Johns Island Library!

The shelves seemed quite sparse of books which was a bit concerning, especially in such a prosperous neighborhood like Mount Pleasant. What really irritated me though was the noise. This is the noisiest library I have ever been to. I had 2 gentlemen having a conversation at the table next to me as if in a coffee shop. There was also a tutor having a session with a student at another table. Even the librarians were talking at full volume to people who came in. If I have to put earbuds in and play white noise in a library thats too loud. I know they had small side rooms for such situations. Please please please be more quiet.

Story time rooms, education rooms, computers with educational games, reading nooks in the windows, beautifully designed book shelves and displays, a cool "shark room" which was a reading area with dome windows all around with sharks displayed and a lovely outside area to read. The staff was very helpful and patient with the kids. They helped with the scavenger hunt that they had for children and went over different programs and events they had coming up. It would be nice if the parking was free, but I guess too many people were parking in the library lot all day and going elsewhere. I found a work carrel where I could plug in both my laptops, though it was a bit of a stretch to the power outlet (I need to start carrying a small power strip!) but quiet. I took a Zoom call or two here without disturbing anyone and still got a bunch of work emails done. Lots of books, DVDs and reference materials. Of course, you need to be a local resident to borrow any of that but anyone is allowed to use the library and the wifi is free for anyone to use.
