Unfortunately after spending 12 months living in India and South East Asia (and drinking a fair amount of sweetened masala chai each day) I came back to find out I needed 5 fillings - ouch! So it's with this in mind that every trip to the dentists is now a case of "God I hope this is just a quick in and out affair" and luckily it has been since the initial painful seatings! Manchester Dental Practice is situated just above the Ruby Lounge on the high street and the staff are always pretty friendly, the dentists and assistants are always pretty young guys and up for a chat/laugh. I've never has any problems with bookings here and you can change an appointment with 48 hours notice without being charged. They also have a hygienist that you can see at the same time as check ups if you book in advance!

Manchester Dental Practice is near my office and seemed to have the least arduous booking process of the city centre dentists - I turned up, filled in a form, paid a £10 deposit and was offered a pretty convenient appointment. My dentist was friendly and professional, as was his assistant. His advice on maintaining dental health was realistic and achievable, ie. you don't need to quit sugar just reduce how regularly you have sugary foods and drinks; try to floss 3x a week if you can't do it every day. He also didn't try to talk to me while I couldn't speak, which my old dentist always did, so annoying! Reception staff were all very friendly and helpful. Overall it was about as good a trip to the dentist as you could hope for!

This place was opened with the view of containing Dentists, Doctors, and other medical professions…read moreso it could ease up on the strain that the Royal Oldham Hospital was taking. It even opened a walk-in-centre so you could visit here instead of A&E pending the seriousness of the situation. So while this is not my doctors, it is my partners and my daughters. You never seem to be able to ring up and get an appointment that day (even if you ring first thing in the morning). I won't name the doctor but we have felt at times that the doctor just wants you in and out and fobs you off with "its viral". The walk-in-centre is pot luck if its busy or not (i'm guessing like most walk-in-centres) but we have had nightmare times were we have had to wait over 3 hours to be seen and then the on duty nurse or doctor has missed stuff like ear infections and such. Then they closed down the walk-in-centre after about 10 months and had it open 8am-8pm and you had to then go to a "Go-to-Doc" (situated in the same building) were you had to ring up and make an appointment if it was out of hours and go through a telephone grilling just to see if it was worth you bringing yourself in. The Car Park is free to users of the centre but always seems to break down thus giving the shoppers of oldham free parking. A plus is that this is Oldham so there is security in the building so that does make you feel kinda safe.

Despite the cost of course, there are no other downsides and you can say good bye to being treated like cattle and 5 minute check ups where you walk out feeling like they've seen you just to fill a quota. Although it's out in the sticks a bit, it's just a short tram ride away and then a 5 minute walk, so don't let that put you off if you're wondering where exactly is Bury again?! 406 actually does lots of cosmetic treatments too, from porcelain veneers to laser whitening at competitive prices, so if you have the money this would be a great place to trust as I did my research and they've been awarded the British Dental Association's coveted "Good Practice" status.. You don't even have to be a patient to come for a one off service either. I'm not suggesting we all go Simon Cowell and have knashers that the rest of society need a pair of sunglasses to face, but teeth often go neglected and 406 can make the beautiful again.
