    Plant on exhibit
    Connie S.

Visiting Fort Wayne, we were able to drop in at their botanical garden thanks to the buy one get one coupon from the Fort Wayne Passport App that I downloaded. The plants are labeled throughout the Gardens. Not a big establishment, but we enjoyed the indoor exhibits that were in bloom. Outdoors, things are still dormant. There is currently a train exhibit that I enjoyed viewing, having grown up surrounded by the train world! The men running the train exhibit were full of interesting facts and knowledge!

Me and my partner visited during the holidays and had a great time. The lobby is nice to sit in for a while next to the the water. The plants are very pretty and very well placed. I would love to come back during the summer and see what it's like again .

I especially enjoyed wide variety of cacti and unusual tropical plants. Note that most paths but not all are wheelchair accessible. In particular, the cacao (chocolate) tree is up some stairs. Some plants are labeled but many are not. Overall good experience. Be sure to get facility map. Note that breakfast items available in shop but not lunch.

Very lovely! This place has really blossomed. The development of the garden has been very well thought out. It is inviting and interesting. The changing props and themes make each visit feel fresh and new. I love all the ways they have incorporated tactile activities, it certainly keeps the kids engaged. I appreciate the coffee house and the darling outdoor patio dinning area.

I was in Fort Wayne at the zoo and had some extra free time so I decided to stop in here. It was Mother's Day Weekend and moms were getting in free. They are also doing their Butterfly Showcase currently (4/23-6/26). The front desk staff were very sweet. This conservatory is stunning and so well laid out. When you head in there's a little play house area for kids (the kids playing in it we're having a blast). You continue down a hall into the Showcase House, this is where the butterfly exhibit was and will changed per exhibit. They also have some more local plants in this house. After a short hallway walk, which has exhibits as well you ended the next house, Tropical House. It's like you walked into your own private rainforest, walk under waterfall and all. I could have hung out in there all day. So beautiful, so relaxing. Even with other people there there are so many wonderful plants you can pretend like they aren't there. The next house is the Desert House. There are these wonderful metal sculptures of desert animals. They have a beautiful outdoor garden as well. There are benches everywhere inside and out. It's definitely a wonderful place to visit.

My husband and I had our wedding here this year on July 23rd! Only a few days ago! I was impressed with the amount of space and the setup you get for the price! Such a bargain for what they give you! Everyone was easy to work with and they did an incredible job! Thank you for an incredible day! Best, Mr. and Mrs. Hiatt

Had a marvelous time with 4 friends this Sunday! We parked on the street around the corner, and were glad to find that parking was free on Sunday's. We grabbed coffee at the Conjure Coffee inside. I've been to a lot of Botanical Gardens, and I've never seen one with a full coffee shop inside. Loved that touch! The price is extremely reasonable for the experience. It only took us about 45 minutes to walk through, and that included stopping for group pictures. We had a great time! Would love to go back next time I'm in Fort Wayne!

Fort Wayne Botanical Conservatory is really fun. Conservatories and botanical gardens are my thing and I was very impressed with the collection of species and educational aspect at the FW Botanical Conservatory. High on the list was a kids garden that was staged as the 100 Acre Woods. Furthermore, they have beautiful waterfalls within their rain forest green house and a cactus that is over 100 years old in their dessert green house. This is definitely on my list for our visit in June. I know my daughter will love playing in the children's garden.

    Captivated by waterfall.

What a pleasant surprise. I had a hard time deciding what to do with my four-month old grandson, as it was our first time out alone together. :) We decided on the botanical garden and both of us feel that it was a good choice. The gardens are divided into different sections. The waterfall in the tropical area was fascinating to us both. We spent most of our time out in the last garden, sitting by a small waterfall and watching a little bunny and butterfly who came to visit. Older kids would enjoy the gardens, as well. What a peaceful hideaway in the middle of the city.

My mom came to visit me from Phoenix, and I was searching for things for us to do. I thought this would be a fun idea, and I was right! The plants were beautiful and the curation was great. A lot of the plants seemed to be dying however... the desert garden certainly did remind us of home however! I also appreciated that the attendant at the front desk gave us some tips for things to look for as we went through the gardens! It's fun to just wander around and take photos of all the plants. I'm certainly no photographer, but it was a fun afternoon. And for only $5 admission, you can't pass this up! (As of November 2021 masks were still required, but it certainly wasn't troublesome to wear them while indoors)

I'm a longtime fan of Elkhart County, a weaving together of nature, culture, simplicity, and quietly diverse populations. DeFries Gardens is a 13-acre site located within the River Preserve County Park. It's meant as a reminder of our human connection to the environment and was once a private homestead. In addition to perennial gardens and woodlands, DeFries Gardens hosts an 1880s Victorian-style home. This garden features several gardens year-round along with a four-season calendar garden. It has a cool, unique design that features the solstices and equinoxes. DeFries can be rented for weddings. DeFries is under the Elkhart County Parks umbrella and hours do vary more than are implied on the Yelp page. Hours are more seasonal. I've updated the website (the old link was dead) and I'd consult prior to visiting if you're coming from very far. There are definitely sections of DeFries that are not wheelchair friendly, though the park can overall be enjoyed by wheelchair users. The circle path, for example, is quite wheelchair friendly. Elkhart County has multiple gardens. You can find them in Middlebury and Shipshewana as well. I know there are others. Elkhart County is definitely worthy of a weekend getaway and a stop at DeFries Gardens is definitely worth your time. While it won't take your entire day, it'll be a restful, beautiful stop in a restful, beautiful county.

Since 1989, I've traveled over 6,000 miles in my wheelchair and raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for a wide variety of organizations. I spend a lot of my wheeling time in Indiana - my home state and lifelong home. Among my favorite places to go in Indiana is Elkhart County, a Northeastern Indiana jewel filled with magnificent trails, a strong Amish community, a number of historic peace churches, and a vibe that just really clicks with me. My favorite trail in Indiana is the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail that winds its way through four Elkhart County communities and runs a bit over a marathon in terms of length. You get to visit a variety of cool small towns and will likely see some Amish folks on their bicycles. Quite honestly, it's awesome. If you stop in Middlebury, and I always do as I have multiple friends there, you can take a break along the trail here at the Krider World's Fair Gardens. For once, this is not small town braggadocio. Krider World's Fair Garden started out its life as a 1934 World's Fair exhibit and has been meticulously maintained ever since. I won't say it's "the" pride of Middlebury, but it's certainly one of the things of which the community is most proud. This is a botanical garden that weaves together gentle walking paths, a quilt garden exhibit, iconic structures, and facilities that include waterfalls, picnic tables, viewing benches, a gazebo, and a swing arbor. The park itself is really only about 2.4 acres. It's not a huge place, but it's a beautiful place. It can be rented for special events, weddings, and photography needs. If you're on the Pumpkinvine, then you'll run into this area as a perfect place to stop and rest and enjoy a beautiful part of Middlebury. The biggest city in Elkhart County is, in fact, Elkhart itself. But, a visit to Elkhart County isn't complete without visiting places like Goshen, Middlebury, and Shipshewana. Yes, I'll admit that it can get a bit touristy but it's a friendly community and a place I absolutely love to visit. This part of the state has about 2 dozen quilt gardens. A "quilt garden" means that they lay the quilts out in a pattern that changes each season. You can also see "Garden With a Cause" here, a garden devoted to charities and local organizations improving the lives of the people of Middlebury. They have a replica of the "Sunrise Bench," a bench that was included in the World's Fair Exhibit and there's a Statue of Hebe and a Water Wheel House among other attractions. If you're in Elkhart County, a stop at Krider World's Fair Garden just really needs to happen. I have some photos, but I'm still trying to find them from past tours. When I do, I'll post my own photos but you can definitely capture the garden's vibe in the available photos here.
