Not a junk shop, a passerby might see this store front and be sceptical that there's anything decent in here. Upon entry, however, they'll find all sorts of little treasures. Furniture downstairs and smaller things on the ground floor, I like to come here to try and get inspiration for gift ideas. Ornate letter opening knives and ancient smoking cards are some of things I've found here. This might not be inspiring interest in you. If you're not the person who likes to rummage around inspecting old things then this may not be the place for you. Although the store front hasn't had too much attention given to it, the people that run the place certainly seem to know what they're doing. The prices are reasonable, and you won't make a car boot treasure style discover and find something ridiculously cheap. It's probably why they have such a good selection too. Tucked away down a side street you'll find this shop, and tucked away in the corners of Focus on the Past you can find something neat to give to a friend.

My favourite antique shop in Bristol, it is a real treat heading in here. Piled high with fantastic items I think it is my cup of tea as a lot of it is mid-20th century. You can find vintage luggage and furniture downstairs - upstairs is a mix of glass, ceramics and home wares. They have lots of wartime tins and packaging, which I love. Prices are very reasonable, with sets of glasses at about £20 for 4. Although there are displays all the way to the ceiling, you will have to have a rummage and delicate leaning over other items to look at what you want so don't come in here with swinging bags or children!

No pootle around Clifton Village is complete without a pit-stop at this little treasure trove of antiques and knick knacks. The tiny shop is literally piled high with everything from Toby jugs to old clocks. I have long been searching for the perfect trunk to double up as a coffee table so most visits have been along this vein, although FOTP is yet to serve up the goods. It's not a shop that can hold a lot of visitors at once, but the owners have ingeniously made the best use of space they can, and there is always something outside the shop to draw you in. The prices aren't the usual overblown antiques shop rate and most of the furniture is in fairly good nick.

I couldn't help but feel a little in awe wandering round this shop, they have thought of just about everything from furniture, to decoration, lighting of every kind even garden accessories. At the moment they have some huge, and I do mean huge, cups and sauces outside which I assume you would plant a pretty plant in, though they looked way to good to put soil in if you ask me! As well as quite extravagant things they do have a good selection of affordable bits and pieces ideal from presents or to brighten up your room, like picture frames, fairy lights, and statement cushions! Not everything in here is to my taste, I think you will either love or hate some pieces but it's definitely work popping in on your way past.

This sensory warning should be displayed prominently at the door of the excellent shop - 'Sense Clifton' - all bright and glittering, colourful pinks, blues and shiny metals. On the other hand, if you have a sparkling magpie persona, fine. Or if you just want to be shocked out of your November torpor, come to Sense for a quick fix. You dont have to buy anything, just browse and you'll fell much better. Though of course, the owners would also feel much better if you did buy something, so why disappoint - they will have done you a good turn. According to some blurb, Sense "...offers a smart mix of design-led products with a contemporary edge...". Apparently, the owners' frequent trips to Holland have given them a new perspective on design. They wanted to attack all the senses and create a complete home environment, everything from comfortable leather seating, exciting lighting and soft furnishings to unusual gifts. Pay a visit yourself, check it out, but take heed of the sensory warnings - highly recommended.

This means not only do you get some unusual plants making it a horticultural goodie bag for gardeners, but you also get plants that are used to the local climate. Plants range in size - there are some great specimen plants here to have a more instant garden feel as well as cheaper younger plants. All are in great condition with plenty of roots to the point where if you choose wisely you can split them and get two plants for the price of one. They have a bargain corner of those which have gone over but will come back in a few seasons or with a good pruning, so if you know your stuff then you can pick up a real bargain. The plants area outside is set out in handy sections - so if you have a shady corner where everything you plant dies then head to the back and there is a whole section of plants that will love that area. The staff are very happy to help, knowledgeable and perpetually cheery. The garden centre-y bit is well stocked, with the focus on what you can use now well-displayed. The cafe is always busy as the owners know that nothing goes better than pottering round a nursery with friends is to sit down and natter afterwards.

The emphasis is on locally sourced stuff, so you're unlikely to get something flown in from South Africa that's going to die within a fortnight. The staff are all chipper and friendly, and will answer your questions no matter how basic they are. The views over the River Avon and of the Suspension Bridge really are second to none. Add to this a café with absolutely scrumptious cake and you've got somewhere that's worth a visit even if you're not planning to pick up any plants (though that's not to say you won't).
