We contracted with Focal Point Remodeling for a deck rebuild and bay window installation project totaling more than $37,000. Based on the sales presentation and representations made during the contracting process, we expected a professionally managed project with competent communication, reasonable scheduling, and workmanship consistent with the price point. Unfortunately, our experience fell significantly short of those expectations. The project became defined by extended delays, poor coordination, inadequate communication, safety concerns, and repeated failures in project management that caused substantial disruption to our household for nearly a year. During the sales process, we were assured that the deck portion of the project would be relatively straightforward and completed in approximately three days. Instead, the work extended to nearly 10 days, including periods where the project was effectively abandoned due to material shortages and apparent scheduling failures. At one point, work stopped entirely over a weekend because the necessary boards had not arrived, leaving our property in an unsafe and unfinished condition without proactive communication or meaningful resolution. Throughout the process, our family repeatedly dealt with hazardous jobsite conditions. Construction debris and exposed 4-inch nails were left throughout the yard over an extended weekend without proper cleanup. As a result, our children could not safely use the property, our dogs required extended boarding, and our chickens had to remain confined due to safety concerns caused by the condition of the worksite. The execution of the project also raised serious concerns regarding preparation and oversight. The installation crew arrived lacking basic equipment necessary to perform the work efficiently, including adequate ladders and proper electrical setup, resulting in repeated reliance on our personal property and utilities to continue the job. It became apparent early on that there was a disconnect between what had been sold and what the installation crew had actually been prepared to complete. Additionally, portions of non-pressure-treated wood were reportedly installed during the deck construction process and later required correction. We also observed visible workmanship concerns involving structural appearance, railing alignment, and finish quality that should not be present on a project of this scale and cost. Communication throughout the project was consistently inadequate. Emails and concerns directed to our assigned contact, Derrick, frequently went unanswered or unresolved despite repeated follow-up attempts. Requests regarding reimbursement for extended boarding costs and the prolonged disruption to our household were acknowledged but ultimately ignored without resolution or further discussion. The bay window installation process created additional concern when we were informed that installation would proceed despite forecasted rain conditions, raising reasonable concerns regarding exposure of the home during active construction. Perhaps most disappointing was the company's handling of escalation efforts. After multiple unsuccessful attempts to speak directly with ownership, we were eventually able to communicate with the owner regarding the extensive delays, ongoing stress, and overall handling of the project. When asked what resolution would be appropriate given the circumstances, we referenced the months of loan payments we had continued making during an excessively delayed and frustrating project timeline. The company's ultimate response was a $200 Visa gift card for our family, which did not reflect the seriousness or duration of the issues experienced. This experience ultimately became so stressful and discouraging that it materially changed how we felt about our home. What began as an investment intended to improve our property instead became a source of ongoing frustration significant enough that we ultimately made the decision to place our home on the market. Consumers considering major remodeling projects should carefully evaluate not only the sales presentation, but also the company's communication practices, project management structure, onsite preparedness, accountability, and responsiveness once a contract has been signed. This is our "mandatory, per contract", kitchen review: -we asked for reface, got talked into a full remodel, which we wouldn't have done if we hadn't been misled about financing -mislead about how long installation would last; told "no longer than two weeks, we don't start until we have all of the product in house"; were also told that they do not hire outside contractors- also false -things were not, in fact, ordered in time (floor), not must wait a week or more for floor to come in and someone to install *leaving us with no kitchen for an extra week and a half when we were promised a week installation -- specifically after being called (early) and being told that the flooring was in, could it be started the next day, contractor shows up, "uh yeah I don't have all of the flooring and they don't know when it'll be in" -we're not told lead time for granite installation by anyone at time of initial project start, then told we had to wait 3 days for granite to 'cure' and it doesn't LIES - to be clear, this would not have been an issue had we known up front -did not include items in the renovation plan that were talked about from initial meeting (ie: under cabinet lighting that had to be added last minute) -did not explain that the new floor would be installed over the existing floor -installed lazy Susan's into blind corner cabinets after specifically said not to; asked for shelves -trash can / recycling cabinets do not function properly, and still don't; we're told they don't know how to fix it -knew what sink we wanted at initial start and measured and at installation told us we could not have that sink because it would not fit based on the measurements when he's the one that took the initial measurements; bought own sink from home depot -cabinets did not match blueprint measurements -installers did not know that they were supposed to be installing the backsplash (more miscommunication); did a very rushed job; pieces missing, cracked; its still covered in grout -were not given any timeline for the installation; took weeks longer than expected -the edge of flooring where it meets the carpet was not going to have a transition strip - HUGE FALL HAZARD in 4 different places; had to almost beg to have the strip put down -did not seal vanity countertop in powder room (just sat it on top of the cabinet) - husband had to do it and it almost fell on him -did not install electrical for dishwasher correctly; husband had to cut hole for it to go into the sink cabinet -backsplash measurements was way off - had to order more twice -contractor had to come by at 6:30 am on a day not scheduled to work, to move the cabinet to fit the dishwasher before granite could be set for dishwasher properly -had to add hole for dishwasher in the sink cabinet -installed baking sheet rack in the wrong direction, husband had to remove & reinstall -did not take cooktop gas line into account and after the granite company placed it, the cabinet drawer didn't close all of the way; had to be adjusted because the drawers would not close -we had just had the house freshly painted and they scuffed many areas and wouldn't touch it up -sold custom appliance 'garage' with non- movable shelves- meaning, that the microwave we currently have is the only size we will ever be able to fit in it; microwave is back on the counter & we told them not to install the 2nd appliance garage as the contractor said "it was put together incorrectly" and was unsure when it would be ready - holding installation up, again -slow close drawers that are not slow to close; they never actually close and have to be pushed in ** The "person" who sold us on this project, who is the co-owner or this circus, is nothing more than a manipulative con artist, nothing short of a used car salesman. This project a disaster from day one and absolutely nothing like what was "promised", nor on the imaginary timeline given. -blatantly lies when questioned about above mentioned issues -car salesman mentality -rude, always passing blame to someone else -extremely rude customer service; tag line is: "I can neither confirm nor deny that " and no one ever calls back --3 weeks in, found out MULTIPLE people "no longer with the company" and items weren't ordered or put together correctly thus changing the completion timeline - never communicated anything to us (the client), 2 days before Thanksgiving, we have an incomplete kitchen and half of a floor -let my dog get out because they couldn't manage to shut the door all the way when asked to multiple times -at one point at the end of install, my husband emailed photos and the above list of complaints and work that needed to be corrected before we would sign off to co-owner who then sent it to the contractor who has been working on our house. Completely disappointed and would not recommend! The person they sent to work on our bathroom was a fabulous worker. However, we were told that the job would be done in 2 to 3 days and that they would send several people to come and work on the bathroom in order to accomplish that goal. I was extremely surprised only one person showed up and the work took all the way through Thursday night. Also doing more research on materials, we were completely taken in and in my opinion, robbed in terms of cost and quality of material. I have no idea how those salesman did it, but I thought I was getting this amazing custom shower with beautiful work however it basically looks like a plastic built-in. My husband and I are in process of getting our kitchen remodeled. The sales rep gave us a ballpark and said we should be ready by the first week of August. He told us to have everything packed and moved out of the kitchen so there would be no delay. It is now Labor Day weekend and we still have no kitchen. They came on Wednesday (8/24) and gutted the entire kitchen.(NO WATER OR ELECTRICAL FOR THE ENTIRE LABOR DAY WEEKEND). We had to cancel delivery for the appliances and cancel the granite contractor. On Wednesday I had an appointment to get an estimate to have my bathroom remodeled. The sales representative was very knowledgeable. She called her manager to see about extra discounts, and extending the cancelation date and the date I would begin to get billed if I signed that day. He really didn't want to and kept saying the job wouldn't start for months. Of course once they construct vanities, mold a bathtub there's no turning back. I said that it was OK and I would get back to them.This wasn't the only project I was considering on doing and was waiting to hear back from my accountant about my tax return. Some projects I was going to do now and others next year. He got upset with me because I wouldn't commit. He said that he shouldn't have scheduled an appointment with me and that I wasted the sales representative time and his. I guess he doesn't understand what a free estimate is and that a customer usually gets several before choosing. He then began to chastise me over and over again about poor judgment, prioritzing, and being responsible( I'm saying it nicer than he was). At this point I said "I'm done" and he hung up on us. I have NEVER been treated so rudely before in my life. I broke down in tears and told the sales representative that I would never hire them to do any work in my home. I don't know what kind of work they do or the quality of their products but It's a shame they have a manager who is obviously lacking the customer skills needed to do his job! I'm selecting 3 stars because our finished project is very nice. However, I am selecting 1 star for communication, customer service, and professionalism. After meeting with the sales representative, we were quoted one to two days (after the items were ordered and received) for our shower replacement project to be finished. Unfortunately, that was just the first among many discrepancies, misinformation, and miscommunication this company put us through. We signed our contract with Focal Point on August 3, 2022 and our completed shower replacement was finished on Dec. 30, 2022 ... a few days shy of five months. Our project was NOT a complete bath remodel, it was simply a shower replacement. Among all the incidents that occurred during our project we NEVER received a call from an owner or someone higher than a project manager. This was a big project for us and we were excited to get it done. Focal Point took all the excitement away and this quickly became a huge stress for us. Never again! read more
