A couple of years ago we bought a beautiful, originally very expensive sofa from my dear Faithful Dining Companion when she bought her first house and it didn't fit. Darn. The sofa in addition to being very well made is super amazingly comfortable. We paid a bargain price because, well, where was she going to put it? :) Never let it be said I do not take advantage of a bargain. The sofa has held up well and we really did not want to replace it, however being basically 10 years old, having moved 3 times, been slept on, jumped on, FDC basically spent the last 2 months of her pregnancy on that couch, the cushions became, well, flat. Enter the Foam Outlet. The Foam Outlet is a pretty nondescript Quonset Hut inside a quiet boat marina along the Delaware river. It's run by Jim, a one-man-band who has been upholstering and cutting foam for well over 20 years, having learned to sew as a Parachute Rigger in the Navy many years ago. Jim is one heckuva nice guy who really knows his foam. I had the opportunity to sit on many different grades of foam and learned about the best uses for each grade. He measured, cut and stuffed my cushions in about 20 minutes, and even let me peek around in his shop as I am a hobby upholsterer. Not only that, but while I was there I picked up a foam wrap with a vinyl exterior for our steel basement pole that always makes me nervous when the Young 'Un and his band of Merry Men are bouncing around down there. This will hopefully keep any damage from hitting the pole to the bruise and bump kind. He sells those for $1 an inch, so if you're thinking right now "Wow, I need that!" just measure, call and he'll have it ready. I was able to get slip covers made from an amazing place called slipcovershop.com and started to panic about my DIY project. I tried to stuff my brand-new slipcovers myself and it looked stupid. Replacement cushions are better than new. I had to replace the cushions after my dog mauled the two in my leather chair from Restoration Hardware. I will have to get the zipper repaired at a different place due to some fabric being shredded, but the cushions are cut to the exact dimensions AND feel so much better than I had before. Just had two worn out sofa bed cushions foamed. Dropped the cushions at 12:30 on a Saturday afternoon. were shown samples and learned about different foam densities. Had the opportunity to sit on each type, both new and aged for several months. We chose the stiffest density, Asked about a local eatery to pass the time, They mentioned Philly Diner, and Denny's, We chose Philly Diner and enjoyed a great late breakfast. Finished our meals returned to pick up the cushions and were on our way in under two hours. Installed the cushions and the sofa bed feels better than new. These guys both Navy veterans are true professionals. Highly recommend this place for all your foam needs. Word of caution the GPS unit placed us on Bartram Avenue near the Airport. His website is equally informative, explaining in detail how the foam weight is determined. I went in expecting to buy the firmest possible. We have a 9 yr old flexsteel sectional that is like NEW (actually better) after getting new back cushions!! It's large (the equivalent of a couch, loveseat & chaise) with a total of 7 back cushions, 4 of those are corner/end pillows with unique shapes. The seat cushions were fine but the backs were not-especially the corners/ends. A bit of a drive but I dropped the cushions off and my husband picked them up the following day on his way home from the airport. (they will do same day-1st come 1st serve). I was a little worried the back cushions would be too firm but they explained they use a different kind of foam for the backs which I was able to test out and its the perfect firmness-comfy but supportive. WAY better then the originals. Fast, friendly service & these are hand cut by someone that knows what they're doing. As for cost it ranged between $63-77 per back cushion-around $500 for 7 cushions+tax. If your fabric is in good shape I highly recommend!
