After my first lesson with him, I was hooked. He has a high tech swing simulator in a tricked out garage. Everything feels personal and professional. Joel knows his stuff. He breaks down the golf swing in such a way that allows for you to take it to the range and work on things immediately. My golf game has significantly improved just by his tweaks in my swing. This guy is "THE GUY" to go to if you want to get better at golf. I'm new at golf (6 months in) and have had multiple lessons in the past months from different instructors. Joel has an incredible way of breaking down a golf swing. I showed up a few minutes early and he let me sit in on a person who had quite a bit of experience, his tips and insight to the seasoned player were very precise but easy to understand. When his lesson ended and I got up to the simulator, he ran me through some of his process flow (which was simple to understand). We dove into the principles of FGL swing theory/dynamics, he broke the swing down into some very very clever explanations and focused on the act of muscle engagement. This provided me with quite a few AHA moments. After just the first lesson, I greatly improved my swing and he also gave some good training drills. Overall, this was the best lesson I've had and I'm an official student of Flynn Golf Lab. Signed up for a 5 lesson package. Joel is a natural teacher and extremely knowledgeable about golf. Right off the bat Joel was super accommodating as he was able to fit me in the same day. From the moment I arrived I felt comfortable in his state of the art facility. The simulator is really great to use because it can show you ball speed, ball flight, spin, the angle of your club when you strike the ball, and more! I am what you could describe as your typical obsessed golfer. I started taking the game more seriously about 5 years ago. During that time I have spent countless hours at the driving range and have dropped thousands of dollars on different equipment hoping it would make me better. I have also taken lessons from many of the better known teachers in the valley including one who is extremely highly regarded and also extremely expensive. But what I was looking for and wanted was not someone who would give me a quick fix but rather find someone I would view more as a coach. Someone who actually seemed interested in taking my game to the next level and not just my money. No offense to those other teachers out there but I just kept striking out. That is, until I found Joel. I will admit that at first I was skeptical. Taking indoor lessons on a simulator in some dudes garage was...well, odd. Turns out odd is exactly what the doctor ordered. After taking just one lesson with Joel I immediately paid him for a five lesson package (which is very reasonable). Joel is very clear in explaining what you are doing in your swing that is hurting you and also how to correct it. He is also very patient and seems more concerned about making sure you are getting what he wants out of you and not just staring at the clock. I have had other lessons where the teacher was trying to get me to do something and before I could get there my hour was up. Many of my lessons with Joel have gone well past an hour because he wants to make sure I've got it before sending me on my way. Since he works out of his home his hours are great as well. I've been able to take a lesson from him in the evenings after getting the kiddos fed and in bed. I am a streaky golfer. I have had times where I play well and can threaten or even break 80. Other times I play like garbage and barely break 100. That's golf. But since I've started working with Joel my confidence in my game is as high as ever. Now it's just up to me to deliver. read more

Joel's a great coach who's incredibly generous with his time. We're often still hitting balls half an hour after our session was scheduled to finish - he really wants you to succeed and improve. On top of that, he's a fantastic teacher. I was a decent mid handicapper (13 to 15) when I went to him. I had the goal of reprogramming my swing and making it into single digits. After five lessons, I'm hitting them more purely than ever before. My drive has gone from 235 yards to 285. My last five rounds of golf have been in the 70's. It's been a huge improvement. For over 20 years I was in the mid 90's sometimes over 100. This my third review after only taking 2 lessons a year apart with Joel.. Last week I shot an 82 from the blue tees. My best ever!!!. Hands down the best instructor I've ever worked with. He truly understands the game and his drills and explanations of the proper golf swing have helped my golf game out tremendously! I am pretty obsessive and highly competitive so it was great to have him break down my swing, things that were obviously wrong and build it back up to a pretty darn nice swing. I'm shaving a good amount of strokes off and just feel more confident on the course on what is exactly going on versus getting into trouble and trying to guess my way out of it. I love the game of golf but the mastery of it can be elusive. I have tried to find the secret sauce to a better swing over the years and in that effort have seen many highly regarded instructors including 2 members of Golf Digest top 100 instructors in America list. I recently moved to Glendale and was researching who I could work with locally after a taking a long break from the game from a shoulder injury. I learned of Flynn Golf Lab from a friend and saw the reviews in Yelp so reached out to Joel to see if he could work with me. Joel was very accommodating and offered a lesson slot that he had open that same day. I made my way to his studio in Toluca Lake and was impressed with his set up on his property. He has visual targets, swing speed tools, video and various teaching aids. We began the lesson with some stretching and a conversation on what my golf goals are and what I was hoping to accomplish in the lesson. We then moved to analysis of my swing (faults) and he quickly made some insightful observations about my tendencies and outlined how I can work with my current swing while introducing some subtle changes to get more consistency out of my game. I left the lesson very happy and excited about the potential in my game. I have since returned for other lessons and see improvement after every session. In my opinion Joel is deserving of being on a top 100 instructor list. I have worked with that caliber of teaching in the past and Joel is every bit as skilled in ability and knowledge transfer. The other area where Joel shines is his genuine love for the game which comes across in his time with you. Our daughter age 7 is taking lessons from Joel and he's been absolutely great from making her feel comfortable and Confident to start. He's teaching methods are simple and effective seeing improvements in her game after just 3 lessons. If you are hesitant about being indoors I wouldn't be we actually think it's a plus. First, there are no distractions, second with this weather it's been awesome but most of all the launch monitor and technical feed back is a great plus. For our daughter being so young we want to keep it enjoyable but still see positive results and we are getting both we can't be happier we've found Joel. I've learned a lot by just sitting at the table and listening to him coach almost feel like both of us are getting lessons. Joel Flynn is better at golf than you are. "Just swing and I'll tell you what's wrong" was said at my last lesson (the third lesson of a package given as a gift by my gf). He is like Joel McHale (talk soup) in demeanor, adjusting for the fact that he's positive, encouraging and whatnot. My skill level is beginner, and I have made marked improvement because of Joel McHale (see, even I get confused). The privacy of the instruction makes for a good environment, lacking the distractions one might find with an instructor at a local driving range. I opted to space out my lessons quite a bit, as I both enjoyed the experience, but just as much wanted to take enough time between lessons to improve my game enough to take fullest advantage of Joel's truly vast pool of golf knowledge and experience. read more

I've been playing golf for 40 years but have never had the time to work on my game. I took lessons a couple of times over the years, but nothing stuck and I pretty much have lived with 100+ scores my whole life. When I retired last year one of my goals was to "re-learn" the game. I've recently been hesitant about taking golf lessons because I didn't know if I would really see positive results. The last time I received lessons from the pga superstore a few years ago, I didn't feel like I learned anything and if anything it probably made my swing worse. Joel helped my swing tremendously within the first 30 minutes of our lesson. He analyses your swing and tries to make the best out of it, he doesn't try to change it to a set to where it's not a good fit for your body and swing. He understands the mechanics and what works for a golf swing. My golf swing is in great shape. I'm at a point where I just need to keep working on little things here and there and not big drastic changes thanks for Joel's instructions. I grew up playing golf with lessons and such, but most recently I have gotten back into it and caught the bug again! I thought it best to pursue professional instruction so I reached out to Joel for help. And honestly the reviews are probably modest. I wasn't expecting to adjust my stance at address, grip and hip rotation but after the lesson and several practice sessions / 9 hole rounds I adopted his recommended technique. I am beginner golfer and I had only swung a club a handful of times at a driving range before Joel. When searching on Yelp for golf instruction in my area, Toluca Lake, I found Flynn golf lab. I had a fun work golf game coming up in 1 month. I wanted to at least be able to keep my ball on the green. I called and set up a lesson for the next day. The first lesson Joel corrected my set-up/swing, holding the club, hitting the ball, etc. It was so great to be able to hit the ball, I ended up buying a package of lessons. By my second lesson, I was able to go play on the course with the guys. We played best ball so there was no pressure. Just a fun time learning and playing. I later went back for my third lesson to go over my mistakes I had on the course. I am going to go for my last lesson soon.
